They are building it! That are basically the words you could here by the German Motorsport magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" who covered that at the Red Bull owened area around Zeltweg the bull dozers and diggers are hearable again. The Formula 1 isn't interested in having a Alpen Grand Prix but MotoGP and DTM seem to be. It is expectable the new track will be finished in September 2010. Unconfirmed sources report, that the DTM will be there for the reopening Event on the 40th day of Jochen Rindt's death. The FIA European Truck Championship and the motoGP seem to have shown also interest to this project.
The A1-Ring layout will not be resumed but the new circuit shall have still some sections of the old Formula One track. The new layout shall be over 5 kilometers long and will also include some modernised sections of the old Österreichring. What layout we will see next year is still not confirmed.

Here the translated source:

In Zeltweg they are building again: New Layout (translated from Stefan Ziegler’s article)

New hope for the Austrian race course: In Zeltweg the construction work has started for the renovation of the track.
(Motorsport-Total.com) – The Formula 1 is not in the view of the alpine republic at the moment, however DTM and MotoGP are. For this cause Red Bull massively enlarges the former A1-Ring to have a modern racetrack in September 2010. The Austrian racetrack hosted Formula 1 Grand Prix from 1997 to 2003. Now they are building it here again.

As our friends of “Auto Motor und Sport” reporting, the construction work have been underway since last Sunday and shall be finished in Fall 2010. On time for the 40th obit of Jochen Rindt the DTM could be hosted as reopening race on the changed circuit. There is also rumour about MotoGP and Truck Events.

For this purpose the layout of the A1-Ring will be fundamentally changed. “Auto Motor und Sport” is covering that the length will be increased from 4,326km to over five kilometres because of the work. While some passages shall stay, the new layout will be geared to the old “Österreichring“. We will have to wait to know if this new track is interesting for Formula 1 again…

Hooray, it wasn't a bad track (although it had nothing on its original form), the view was nice too, good to see it coming back.

Do you have a source?

Quote from carey :Well quote some sources from the start then (or where you too busy having a ‘crisis’).

It wasn't meant personally... also I said in the opening post that a german magazine "Auto Motor und Sport" covered this... the later source was by "Motorsport Aktuell" who are basically quoting what "Auto Motor und Sport" said. And I thought giving a German source might not be statisfying, so I kept it with giving no source but more or less telling what is written in the article.

Falke could you possibly translate that article, if possible?

That's really great to hear It was a pretty cool track when F1 races there, always liked racing it in GP4 (or was it in GP3?).

Hope they'll get it done soon

I'd like to quote myself and say I was talking shit. I've driven the A1 Ring many times after this post and I love the circuit. Just bad memories from GP3 and GP4

Next season will have a few "new" circuits then
7 corners...will be amazing

Anyway that's not a track for Pirelli's too much banking into the corners and massive understeer everywhere ^^
20 something odd races next year... Poor engineers getting their moneys worth.
