What he says is true in a long-term perspective, but regardless, people who know nothing about F1 and getting interested in it because somebody crashed and died to me can NEVER be a good thing.

Donington in trouble. Some people seem happy about this, but I can't quite understandthe euphoria. When we could be looking at having 2 F1 standard venues in the UK it's something to be happy about, instead people attacked Gillet day 1. Mind you we are British and revel in failure!

Two "F1 Standard" venues would be awful. "F1 Standard" generally means "a bit shit for anything slower than a GP2 car". Silverstone is dull enough, and they're gonna ruin Donington too.
They should've just left Donnington alone, its a fine track as it is.
Donington was a complete and utter shithole. Some of the worst facilities out there. This project is/was helping bring it up to standard. There is no doubt the UK leads world motorsport industry but we could be in serious trouble in a few years but if we can't continue to grow and evolve. We will fall behind other countries.
We can get all emotional and attached to XYZ circuit but the reality it we need to come out of the dark ages. Granted due to the nature of government subsidised circuits/facilities in other countries we are struggling regardless.

Donington was fine. The facilities weren't bad at all. Anyone who thinks they were is living in the same cloud cuckoo land as Bernie. For club motorsport (the majority, and without which professional motorsport wouldn't be sustainable) it was one of the great circuits you really wanted to go to.
Making it to Bernie's/Tilke's standards ruins it for the majority.
In terms of F1, Donington was rubbish. But why should another great circuit be ruined to make it good for F1?
I hope Donington fails before they dig up too much. I want to race there. And I want to enjoy it.

But it was a national/club circuit, and thats what I expect of such circuits. Infact its probrably one of the better kept national circuits, the facilities may be showing their age but at least there are plenty of them.
Although the overall quality ofthe UKs circuits has improved massively thanks to the likes of MSV, if you think Donnington is bad, I can remember what Snetterton used to be like in the late 90s.

I hate Tilke circuits as much as the next guy, and recognise the importance of club level racing. However I can't see how it's a bad thing improving Donington. The place desperately needs a face lift.

Face lift, yes. Resurfacing the paddock? Yes. But widening the track to F1 standards so that 90% of the corners are flat in anything other than an F1/GP2 car? No thanks. The Craner Curves will become boring. Coppice, Redgate? Who gives a damn. Kerbs the width of a car? Runoff areas the size of Wales? Sure, it'll be 'safer' for club racers, but the challenge and the enjoyment will be ruined.
Most UK circuits - Anglesey, Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Knockhill, Rockingham (poor example) etc have facilities far in excess of most non-UK circuits. Sure, Combe has no pit garages (nor does Mallory really, or Cadwell), but even there the rest of the facilities are on a par or better than most non-UK circuits.

Trouble is all these modern circuits are basically big hotels/casinos/enterntainment centres which happen to have a racing ciruit, it should be the other way round.
