You shouldn't be surprised, I am a lurker, what should you expect? Whenever I am at my computer I am waiting excitedly for a post in this very thread.

On topic: I have stated my original intentions of posting that "bullocks' hypothetical situation. So the discussion can continue.
so apparently it is impossible to explain the english language to an american
It is apparent there is a misunderstanding of the definitions, and different uses of words. But it is definitely not on my end.
meh... hopeless
Wondering how he missed the comedy in xaotic's post, too.

equally you learn from a young age that yellow and red are colours used on warning signs and thus your reaction is entirely based on previous experience with a very common theme in signage

Quote :
The bio-hazard sign is a perfect example of prejudice. Firstly, the color yellow is synonymous to caution. People have seen images contained in yellow triangles that refer to relevant dangers like ice on the road or traffic signals. Secondly, the image in the center of the sign. Most people have seen these in movies, if not in real life. In the movie there is usually some sort of carcinogenic material that is shown to be dangerous. Someone can reasonably assume that most yellow signs seen on the road are warnings for dangers that may not be apparent.

In biology this is observed as an evolutionary anti-predation strategy called aposematism and is seen in certain brightly coloured animals which tend to be highly toxic or poisonous (I studied this quite a bit for a project I was working on last year). This works fine overall in the animal kingdom but when applied to human thinking it's obvious that we're often totally betrayed by our dramatic simplification of complex things down into symbols which are then taken to be true. This can lead to things like racism.

It frequently happens that when you push a racist person to explain why they have problems with a particular race, it's never really about the colour of a persons skin but the things they imagine that those people are doing or what those people believe. Racists often don't notice that the points they're describing often apply equally to members of his/her own race, but then they're going by symbols, not reality. Colour or some other such thing then takes on a significance because without the symbol things get messy again and the person is left without a properly defined object to focus their frustrations on.

Anyway, I believe Kev explains all this much better than I, and with much more humour, so I'll bow out and let the racist bashing continue.

I just wanted to say 'aposematism'. Atleast click on the link, it's pretty awesome..
You guys think I am racist? I guess I have been conveying the wrong message.

I was pointing out the positive traits of prejudice that exist in all animals, including humans. I have never sided with racism. I agree that racism is result of misconceptions and there is no justification for it.

As for immigration, I am fine with legal immigration. But giving Amnesty to people who have entered illegally is what I am against. I don't care what race immigrates, as long as it is legal. Breaking the law is breaking the law.

I think I am indeed better at explaining things to thick people than you are, but it's an empathy thing.

Most laws are bullshit though aren't they? By the way I lived in your country illegally for three years.
I didn't really mean to sound like a biologist back there (or wank over wit), but I do actually want to become a biologist. (i've been reading a a fair amount of dull, technical stuff lately and I guess it's rubbing off)

Marine Biologist: Leelu is a rare toothed female narwhal who got disoriented and washed up in Atlantic City, as we all do from time to time...

...

Marine Biologist: And the third reason whales kill is for the pure fun of it
Leela: Is there anything else?
Marine Biologist: Yea, you smell funny and your suits lumpy
Damn long thread here.....

IMO some laws are and some laws are not. That doesn't give me or anyone else the right to break the laws I don't like.

I am not surprised that you got away with it. There are many, obviously illegal, immigrants standing out side a Home Depot that are left alone.
Quote from ATC Quicksilver :Borders are imaginary, money is imaginary, but people are real and lots of them need help but don't get it because of imaginary bullshit.

hmmm yeah like your post.
Anyone with half a brain would see "Daily Mail" in the link and give it a miss.
Also, why do people blame the immigrants for being put in those houses by the authorities?

The more I think about it, the more it looks like the case of real estate owners telling the responsible guys that they have assets that they can't sell or lease at the moment, so they let immigrants and ultimately taxpayers just pay for them. I wouldn't be surprised if people in the administration also get their share...
Yes, even I am beginning to agree with someone like Coleus Rattus

So are you saying the article has no truth to it?
Quote from STROBE :So are you saying the article has no truth to it?

Not at all, its probably got a tiny amount of truth buried away in a "lets whip up a pitchfork weilding frenzy" load of old claptrap.
Ok a bit more delving into the “Daily Heil” it sound and looks bad...but as always...if you look a bit more cloesly there are a few point which need to be raised.

1) The Council (Local Authority) has a duty to house people; they can't see them out on the street. Since there is unlikely any Council house which can fit 10 people, the council are at the mercy of private landlords who can charge what they like. Unless the option is too let innocent children suffer.

2) How can she be reasonably expected to work and look after 8 kids? She shouldn't have had that many really, but it isn't a crime....despite what some people want

3) If it's 'Council' accommodation, children of opposite genders from a certain age onwards (I think from the age of 9...not sure) can't share a bedroom, and nor can a child and a teenager of the same gender. If it's privately rented accommodation, these rules don't apply.

4) The REAL crime here is the lack of social, affordable housing available. It's not just large family size (and lets get real...it don't matter about colour, race or creed...there's no need for that size of family) but there are other average sized families of 3 kids and 2 parents who are being put up at the expense of the taxpayer due to the lack of affordable housing.

BTW, I'd like to point out that as far as I'm aware... the maximum Housing Allowance is £1,600 per week. How the “Daily Heil” got £90,000 out of a 52 year is beyond me....unless London village works on a new 56 week and ain't told the rest of us
Quote from Mackie The Staggie :4) The REAL crime here is the lack of social, affordable housing available.

..and lets not forget the complete wankers that made this family's lives such hell that they to leave their old home.

It makes you ashamed to be British when your fellow countrymen (and women) treat people like they do.

Don't like the council paying for them to live in such houses? Don't drive them out of the accommodation they are already in then.

Anyone see Panorama a few weeks ago where a Muslim couple went and live on the Southmead estate in Bristol for a few weeks and filmed it all with hidden cameras? It was an absolute disgrace the way they were treated.

Quite frankly I'd be more than happy if they got rid of all the racist chav scum on the estate and filled the place up with asylum seekers.
I dont think anyone is casting the blame at the lady in the above article for being given a good home in which to raise her children.

"Anyone see Panorama a few weeks ago where a Muslim couple went and live on the Southmead estate in Bristol for a few weeks and filmed it all with hidden cameras? It was an absolute disgrace the way they were treated."

yes i did and i agree it was a disgrace how those children behaved, however i was very upset in the way the makers of that tv show conducted themselves.
I live in what could be called a "rough" part of Derby, now if i went out my front door at anytime of day looking for chavs to start arguements with on street corners trying to provoke a reaction then should i be surprised if i get one? In fact im certain if i took a hidden camera out right now and looked at any hoody the wrong way i would get some form of abuse.

But please remember all the people who gave the abuse in that program were just children, not neo nazi's BNP members or N.F thugs just stupid bored working class children looking for someone to pick on, I remember all the adults in that program being very polite and friendly with one gent even coming to the aid of the lady when she was getting "mugged" by a 11 year old boy on a push bike ooooooooooOOOO scary talk about out of the fire place and into the fire........... I mean to seek asylum after escaping the gunships and tanks to then be threatened by a small 11 year old boy on a push bike must be hell!

Why is this? Why can't two males or two females share the same room, regardless of age, provided it's large enough to acommodate separate beds for each occupant? Taken a step further, why is it so taboo for a brother and sister to share a room?

We've seen what happens in the USA.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

If a brother and sister want to get it on, that's their problem. I don't think separate rooms would prevent it either.

I don't see how a straight brother and sister sharing a room is any different from gay brothers or sisters sharing a room, either. Generally one does not seek to mate with a sibling, regardless of orientation. If that kind of urge is there, something is wrong.

Or you have sexy siblings...

sorry, couldn't help myself.
