The continuing saga of my bike license!!!

Quote from mrodgers :Wow, I can't believe what you guys over there have to do to ride a motorcycle. Over here in the land of stupid regulations, like wearing a seatbelt by law, yet not required to wear a helmet (yes in a car and motorcycle respectively). All we have to do, at least in my state, is pay for a permit which doesn't allow you to ride on 4 lane roads, without a helmet, with a passenger, and after dark. Then you just go and take a quick road test and you're done. You have your license. But, the majority never do the roadcoarse and either renew the permit every year or ride without altogether. I've been riding for 4 years and only had a permit for the first year. Never bothered to renew it or go for the license. I do want to, but.....

We do have a voluntary motorcycle safety training. It is free, takes 2 or 3 days, and you get your license endorsment at the completion. This is the route I want to go, as folks who have been riding for 10-20 years say they still learn something from the beginner's course. But it is very difficult to get in, very popular and busy. You have to sign up well in advance, but they provide the bike, so you don't even have to have one yet.

sounds like some kind of paradise...
But i don't want to be in the vicinity of an american (unexperinced) driver on 2 wheels when it's coming to hairy situations...
I was told by my instructor that the process of legal-driving a car in the states is very simple...
I wonder why this is...

It's not like that so much now. There is the graduated license and it takes much longer to get a license. Motorcycles are a different story though... Head to the DMV office, pick up your temps, the next day come in for your license, if you pass the written and practicle exam off you go riding with your license. They recommend people taking riding courses at the local college but some people don't listen.

I have a Yamaha seca2 600 and the parts are in the mail to get it running agian after 4 years of being stationed in the UK and being able to ride it.
thats why i will never ride in the states, cause any moron(no offence mr rodgers etc) can pretty much just jump straight onto a bike. at least here, you have to be trained and thought suitable for it, then the morons just buy the latest litre bikes and shove it into a hedge or the back of a lorry.
At least they're given a choice to exploit their own stupidity. If someone wants to jump on the latest liter bike, skilled or not, far be it from me to stop them. It's their choice.
Well, tomorrow is the first day of my "real" training, culminating in my test on Wednesday, so fingers crossed it doesnt rain between then and now!!!.

Dan,

You'll be alright!
so...hows it goin??
Really well, had an absoloute blast on the 500's today, was grinning from ear to ear hacking down the back roads, plus they are 100 times easier to ride than the 125's.
I am pretty much there now, instructor says I he would be very suprised if I didnt pass tomorrow, everything is there, my riding as way past test standard, I can u-turn in the road well enough, 5 out of 6 on a few occasions today, emergency stop is fine, just need to string it together tomorrow at 3:27pm for 40 mins and I will be home free!! .

Dan,
Quote from danowat :Yep, I remember people having them back in the early 90's (back when the 350LC was king!!), sidewinder I think they were called.

Dan,

Hey congrats dude, stay upright and have fun
Well done dude. I've got my self booked in for my DAS on the 29th and 30th of August. I have already got my bike stored away in the garage, a 1998 Triumph Trident 750. It may be a 750, but it's a naked bike, rather than a fast bike. It's more bark than bite if you know what i mean.
a naked bike RATHER then a fast bike.....look at the aprillia tuono, sv1000, bmw k1200r...all naked and all fast as fook.

good luck with the DAS though.
Good luck for the end of August Crazybrit

Dan,
Cheers guys, i will also let you all know how i get on!!
Just letting you all know that i have now passed!!!! Also with 5 minors. It wasn't as hard as i thought. Almost failed on the U turn in the road, almost put my foot down, but managed to rev it a bit harder and pull out of it!!!
Quote from danowat :Also there is what I am doing, Direct Access, you must be over 21 to do this test, and you must pass this test of a bike with more than 500cc and 33hp, after passing this test you can ride anything you want.

Thought I'd necro post this rather then just make a new thread. In regards to direct access, saying over 21, I take it that means 22+ for DA?
If so that sucks as the bike I'm eye balling is a CB500 which means I wouldn't be able to ride it (if I buy it) for a year :/
I would think over 21 is something over 21, like 21,1.
