Just a thought that crossed my mind:
It pays off to flat-shift (in certain cars) in qualify session to get a better time. It'd be nice if the possible engine damage (and crash damage if you crash) would be carried over to the race that you're qualifying for.
This way you'd have to think twice about pushing your car over the limit in the qualify session as you might end up having a borked engine.
