and the answer is because of everything that followed...

people dont want it because:

waste of bandwidth
waste of computing time and energy (it takes a while for them to load)
and often have a negative viewpoint; and many a times are they used in the wrong manner

... just use an avatar!

if we were to have signature pictures, then i dont think victor would have wasted however long he worked on trying to improve the speed the forum works at
