Passing aid
My idea of the passing aid is 2 vertical bars 1 on either side so as u pass another car say on the left the left bar fills up in proportion to how far u r alongside each other also maybe change colour depending on how close u r.

I think it would help especially off the line where most of the accidents happen and also when u get 2 racers having a close battle.
That takes away a lot of the realism, but as long as you can disable it I'm not against it. I don't think it should be a priority though, there are a bunch of other items that are much more important.
in reality you dont have to have special equipment or a button to look around either

+1 but disableable
why dont u try kegety's pitspotter?? there is even a voice telling where the cars around u r

And it's quite working well !

But i think this option should be incorporated into LFS so the newbie can use it and avoid crashes easily. And more professional drivers can desactivate the feature.

Well I think Scawen has hinted the direction he wants LFS to go by making the reset option only attractive for arcade servers and setting the default to off. I hope he follows through, we don't need silly bars telling us where other cars are most racers are aware of cars around them and don't need this.
+1 from me.

because I drive in the chase cam mode.
with chase cam it's even easier to overtake...(or easier to oversee how to overtake)

Chase cam is useless and takes away the whole point of the sim.

Also to have any aid telling you how close a car is abreast takes away part of the sim envoirnment. Nascar uses it so I would say yes for it and the current add-on to only be used on the Kyotoring, if you must have it at all.
@CSU1: it was pointed at Anathema, maybe I was a bit unclear...

but you are right.
Great Idea

But put it in another game like the GTR series or something - I don't think it will be suited to LFS!

we have Pitspotter (a real life solution), why go for something arcade like this?

Most important thing you can learn in LFS is learning to LOOK! If the car isn't in your mirror, it very well may be beside you. LOOK! Map it to a button and use it!

The most satisfying thing that happens is when you are side by side passing or being passed and you look and make "eye contact" with the guy beside you.

Pitspotter works excellently. Instead of an arcade feature, it simulates an actual radio that some guy is watching your car letting you know that someone is there.
Ok so maybe the bars arnt right so after some more thought
what about virtual side mirrors that could maybe go along side
with the virtual rear view mirror

the game already has look left/right buttons. just use them.

alot of people dont use those... i played for 3 hours in the SCTT servers today and and so many people were ramming each other.
i was rammed a few times because i saw an oppertunity to over take but then the guy to the left or right of me would cut across ramming into me then they beep thier horn and blame me....
people need to use the look funtion alot more.

Yeah, you do. They're called neck muscles.
use pitspotter
Everyone has neck muscles, so they are not "special equipment". You just turn your head. Way to state the obvious. However it takes a special action nothing like this in LFS, pushing a button to move your narrower then real FOV, to a position that isn't adjustable. Either that or a track iR. Pitspotter is fine, but sensors for cars coming along side are becoming more and more common on road cars. It's hardly unrealstic to think that these sensors could be combined with the HUD technology in use by a few manufacturers to create a bar on the HUD.

My point is simply that there is more than one way to compenste for the fact that you are not in a real car.
Everyone also has buttons they can assign to left/right.

It's a skill in sim racing to use the information available, such as left/right and your mirrors to find where the cars are around you. Why take that away? We already don't have to deal with any G Force so why take away the immersion of being on the edge looking around for other cars?

If you have a HUD showing you how close a car is then that's as bad as giving all the cars TC and stability control IMO, takes away the skill and challenge.
and some of us are a little light on buttons due to logitech's oversight. That's my point. More than one way to skin a cat.

(not me though, DFP user and proud)
Quote from Jakg :we have Pitspotter (a real life solution), why go for something arcade like this?

the basic idea isnt that arcadey actually ... its more of a work around until 180° displays are widely available
Guys, stop with the arcade sugestions already, i really don't like the way the most people thinks here, i thought that we are all seeking the most realistic experience, and you want bars that tells you if someone is around you??
And i see Scawen is also unsure of the way he wants LFS to be.. and these kind of threads push him more to that arcade side..
At one ocassion when i didn't know what Shift + F is, i accidentaly switched all info off, and didn't know how to get it back, and it was in the middle of the race, and it was really fun, not knowing in what position i am, is that car ahead off me one lap behind me or he is in front, etc.. it was really immersive, i wish we all played like that, no minimap bullshit, with pit crew telling us what position we're at, how many laps left, etc..

Watch out, use mirrors. I used the pitspotter, but a long time no more, i want see the cars beside me - watch out.
