I used to always have cars as my background until I got two screens. Because now it's hard to find photos big enough, and if I do, I hate having the car split... so I use this now.

Everyone seems to be really snobbish about this, but Messenger (i use Messenger Live 8) and Messenger Plus! Live (Download) with the "Display Contact On Desktop" feature - you can use a copy of Miranda, and slim all the crap of the list so that your left with just the buttons which you leave open in a window, but it looks nowhere near as good tbh

EDIT - It's not Vista independent, either - works on XP, too. Just make sure you don't install the "sponsor program"
