Matt - Intel beg to disagree - they set "Thermal Specifications" on the maximum temperature they say CPU x should hit - ie for my B3 Quad Xeon it's somewhere around the 62.3 mark, whereas for a nice G0 revision it's in the 72 region.

Older Skt. A CPU's were 180 nm and thus made a shedload of heat (CPU's hitting 80° lasting for 8 years anyone?)

AMD CPU's (Specifically the 65 & 90 nm models) shouldn't really be pushed over 55°, and the stock cooler should be able to do that just fine, Intel CPU's (Specifically the P4's) run hotter, with the suggested load temp between 60-65.

EDIT - Some pics from Intel's site:

EDIT 2 - I think ATiTool will show the temperature - if it doesn't change much then it's a sign of it not being utilized, however if your drivers are hooky then it might not load, or the card might not have a temp sensor.

Have you tried a clean uninstall>reboot>driver cleaner>reboot>re-install drivers?
Quote from Jakg :Have you tried a clean uninstall>reboot>driver cleaner>reboot>re-install drivers?

Yes, various times with different drivers too.

CPU load varies between 75%-100%, is mostly at around 80.

Will try ATItool.
Can't find any temperature values in ATItool, will see if I can find something else.

It averages 125 FPS in the 3D view of ATItool, don't know if that means anything...

FTR i get 500 FPS on my card - the ATi Tool ONLY renders a big block, it's not exactly a benchmark, it's only there to show artefacts.
Hmm, is 125 FPS too low for my card? If so, I think the problem is located.
lol i get 30 fps on that thing, but i get 100 in lfs

Slow? Not sure tbh, it's not a benchmark at ALL, it's there JUST to get your card to artefact.

Does it work alright in other games? If so, then try re-downloading a separate copy of LFS - if it still does it then it's worth checking your graphics card is working at the right clock frequency.
Clean LFS install didn't change anything. Very weird this
, this is wierd, can't you remember anything else you did that day, i suggest personally, restoring you system

Win. XP SP2

Start>All Programmes>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore, and restore your PC to a previous date where LFS was working fine

good luck

Gil - Does this problem affect other games, or JUST LFS?
I don't play other games often, so wouldn't know the difference. But I just tried the rFactor demo and PES6, and it all seems the same as before

just try what i said, i think only choice is restoring the system to previous date where stuff was working fine
weeeeird. what if you run lfs from the other hd?

did you mean rf and pes run well but photoshop & lfs don't?
Hmm, yes, LFS is on a separate HDD. And Photoshop is not slow, it was just an impression I got because of the LFS viewer being slow after switching from PS to it.

I'll try moving LFS to the other HDD.

Is your GFX card forcing any special settings on LFS? Try renaming LFS.exe to something like "LFS_Test.exe" and see if it helps.
Changing HDDs didn't work, renaming LFS.exe didn't work
Take the task manager and look what process is taking up so much resources, you said you have average 80%, thats too much, I once had svchost.exe, which took 100% and it was pain in a**. After using zonealarm and scanning, problem went away

Or did I understand right, that you dont have any process taking up resources, but it still shows 80% usage?
No, LFS uses the 80%.

Which implies the GFX card is holding it back, and yet it plays other games fine.

Tried deleting "card_cfg.txt" from your LFS Folder?

I'm stumped. If you had a spare HDD you could try re-installing Windows and give it a quick test?
