I think LeMans cars are limited by liter capacity...i think...maybe? A rotary can make more power per liter than a piston engine, while also being smaller and lighter. This gives it an advantage over cars in the same class, which is why I believe it was banned (not only at LeMans.) just speculation though.
(btw, i would love to see a rotary powered car in lfs. Maybe put a rotary in the FOX...
