Question about run off areas
At the end of the blackwood straight in round 1, someone attempted to pass me by taking the inside line. We were about equal through the turn. At the corner exit we were still side by side and I used the run off area while the car inside of me went from the inside all the way to the edge of the track (where his left tires were at the edge of the track near the runoff area). Well, the runoff area is fairly short there and I quickly found myself in a situation where the runoff area was ending and I had no where to go. I tried to get my right side wheels on the track but the other car was there and we made slight contact and I wound up going in the grass and losing a bit of time. My other option would be to brake and let him and another car pass and dive back onto the track.

What's the right thing to do in this situation? Should I not have used the runoff area? Had I not used it he would have had a harder time passing but I thought I would prevent contact by giving him more room. I'm technically not off the course correct? So it is his responsibility to give me room to come back on?

No, you are not off the course. He should have given you room to get back on the track. If you'd have turned into him to get back on the track, then you would almost certainly have avoided penalty, however that person should have given you more room. Would that person (if they know who they are) mind owning up and apologising?
It's not a biggie, just courteous.

(it wasn't me was it? :schwitz
Hey, now that i looked at the replay it was probably my fault. So I should apologize! He had the run on me and towards the end of the runoff area the rear of his car was slightly ahead of my front tires. If I had lifted and got behind him I would have only lost a spot I wrote this post from memory but really it was not as I described.

He had actually given me plenty of room (maybe not enough to hold my line... but he was passed me so it was my fault!) Anyway, I'm bored and needed something to rant about to avoid doing real work.
I think that was me (If it wasn't, then it was another similar incident)

Here's my recollection: I was in your slipstream coming down the straight, and after that slight turn I pulled out and came alongside you. We then tried to outbrake each other, and we both braked too late. I had the inside, and did my best to give you room. If I had tried to give you more room by slowing down/braking, I probably would have understeered into you and we both would have gone off course.

If you spec me during the corner, I was over the limits of grip for the whole corner, and gave you as much room as possible...

Hehe, was a good battle though
off topic - could i get that ps2 then?
ontopic- i think you are both quite right :P

Those situations are hard in LFS mostly due to limited peripheral vision - but my tactic on such situations that I see contact will be hard to avoid and there's no room is to let off and line him up for the switchback by going slower in the turn and coming out on the throttle faster. If he's taken the inside line fast he'll have to slide out to the outside if he's at speed so he won't be able to accelerate real quick - so just stick to his bumper or dive in for the next series of turns where he'll be at a disadvantage coming out of the first one if you close the door before the tyre-stack.

At worse you lose a position but you're both still on the track. At best you regain your position and have a blast for pulling it off.

You have no idea of the amount of PMs I've been getting about people complaining that they didn't get a PS2...
