Idea for Forum - Karma Points
first of all, save the flaming bananas and the big search's, because yes, i searched, and i found no thread about this. If there is one already, then sorry.

my idea is creating in the forum a points system, usually called karma, for those who don't know, and basically is a...points system , where they are added if you help the community, the forum or even the game itself in some way (for example a very good idea or game add-on), or removed if you do the opposite (for example if you insult someone), and can even reach the state of negative karma.

normally the whole community can add or remove karma to anyone they want, but to prevent cases of points added or removed by no reason, i think only the moderators should be able to add or remove these points.
of course users could request mods to add or remove karma to someone by pm, if well justified.

edit: and i forgot. the points would be shown in the user's profile.
This section is for improvements to the LFS Game, not the vBulletin forum
There is a reputation system built into vB which is supposed to pretty much do as you describe (although is also used for other goals). However it's generally not a particularly well used system.

The mods here use the infraction system for tracking badly behaved people, which at a certain number of points will restrict the person from accessing parts of the forum. The only people who can see past and current infractions are mods and the people who receive them, however.

As for people asking mods to put points on a user for karma... It's unlikely that will happen. The mods here are not paid and are volunteers doing this in their own time. I'd imagine that we'd get rather a lot of requests for karma and it just wouldnt be feasible I'm afraid.

I don't think it would be that much. i believe people are smart enough to only suggest someone when he/she really deserves it...

ps: ...errr, i forgot the little kids...
I think this forum has an infraction system (only mods and devs can use it) which is similar to the karma system in some ways but AFAIK it's just for punishment. I'm not really sure what good it would do if we would have a karma system.

Edit: too slow again, time to sleep
We had a "thanks" system, which got removed due to kiddys abusing it. So it's been tried here before, to failure.
and i also think it would improve the forum's ambience and some behaviours, because imo no one wants a negative number, specially if it is shown public...

Then what about a Thumbs Up(Good Post) Thumbs Down(Bad Post) rating system which could then be added to the profile? Leaving the admins alone.
Didn't we have the thumb thing a while ago?

I don't really see the point of karma points. I form my own opinions of you lot so no need to see which forum trolls are favourites amongst the mods.
I hate hate hate the karma points. Everyone always says "REP ME IF I HALPED YOU LAWL" and it gets annoying.

Ok then, how about the goodpost/bad post system, where it doesn't show it on your profile. But it counts towards star ratings in the threads as to whether it's a good thread or yet another "steer clear" thread?

When members currently vote on the threads they cannot change their ratings when new posts are made. So you could be giving 5 stars to a crappy thread.

We used to have a thumbs up/down for every single post. I liked that feature. It was operant conditioning, which works.
Why?

What's the use and purpose?
What's wrong with harsh (yet loving) abuse when it comes to discouraging idiotic threads? Give me a flaming bananna any day.
If anyone visits facepunch they've got a rating system. Originally it had positive and negative ratings. Including Agree, disagree, funny, friendly, unfriendly, informative and more. However people abused the negative ratings, and bandwagoned so now there's only positive ratings: Thanks, Agree, informative and funny.

We had a thanks feature (whch was actualy meant to stop the "+1" suggestion Spam) but just got abused the hell out of.

You just can't trust certain forum members with a rep fuction.
I kept wondering where I saw the thumbs up "I agree" thingy. Because I thought it would come in handy, but I couldn't find where I saw it. I thought I was going mental... But apparantly I did saw it here

Nah, I saw it on a forum, a button so you could agree with what someone said. Apparantly it used to be here, but I kinda missed it somehow.
yay i got that Liveforspeed.se?. Dont really agree with this 'karma points' idea, i can see it getting abused by some members.
a system where if a thread turns into a flame war after enough thumbs down votes it gets auto locked.
