3D Headlights
More polygons = lower fps. And also it'll mean a rewrite of the headlight flashing code if they aren't textures anymore.

But I'd like them too. I love the little details on the S2 cars, like the bonnet pins or the washer jets. I've already made my own version of those 3D lights for my Max renders (although nowhere near as good as those ones you posted).

At the very least I'd like the FZ lights to point forwards more and less upwards by default. It's a 30 second fix in Max to drag two or three verticies, and adds a lot even with the default textures imo.

But I'd love to see what Eric does with all the cars and all the tracks. Most need little tweaks here and there and they'd be stunning.

Just makes no sense ingame imo - you cant see it anyway, just like those 2048² skins

I mean.... some people don't even see other cars...
Anyone feel like sharing the 3DS max scene?
actually.. i was talking to roadhog about this whole thing, we DEFINETLY should have 3d headlights by S3, it really doesnt take as much FPS as you may think it would, as of right now, you can make outsanding looking headlights and brake lights with plenty of polys to spare if you used as many polys as there are on probably 1 wheel (obvoiusly with 4 wheels, you could make it look pretty real)

all it takes is a box with 4 tri's intersecting in the center, move that center vertex inwards, put a ball (which can consist of 5 polys if you wanted) and then 4 tris or more to make up the glass, and then a texture
that would be nice.. and wouldnt take up to many resources either
but right now.. i mean some cars are okay without 3d headlights/brakelights, but cars like the XR's .. dunno, something about them that just doesnt look right compared to the others
then headlights wise.. we need pop up lights

Without reading through the whole of that remarkably 'simple' unpunctuated instruction sheet what's actually wrong with a 2D texture, if your looking at other cars headlights while racing someone must have done something wrong
nothings wrong with a 2d texture, im just saying LFS would look much better with 3d headlights, for some cars like the FXO and FXOGTR, those dont really need better headlights, those headlights look very good, LX's DEFINETLY need 3d headlights though, i can tell you that much

but still.. we neeeeeed pop out headlights for the XRs

(.. wow.. i just found the joke in your statement lol.. thats sad) but ya, anyways.. the brake lights .. for some it would be nice, like the FZ's, those would look good with 3d brake lights. owell, hope for the best

Ok so these are headlights, which affect the styling of the car and will not be rendered in theory when you see the back of the car (not to mention LODs can help with fps anyways). So now I'd like you to share your view with us regarding 3D door lines and 3D hood pins.

My opinion is that if we're gonna have this sort of detail, might as well have 3D headlights, at least on the FZ because those flat things we have right now look pretty ridiculous compared to the rest of the car.
pfft, we need WAY more 3d stuff on the cars... nearly everyones video cards on here can handle a few extra polies. Its the cpu's that arent fast enough to do the physics. :P
sweet
Great Idea More detail the better I say!(sine I have a strong comp :P) Also it would be nice when you turn on the lights of the XRT, they pop up, doesn't have to be a smooth movement but it would look sweet!

this aren't much more polygons that a nearly modern pc cannot handle.. also the flashing itself could still be done by the texture, so the "headlight flashing code" would not need any rewrite. it just changes the alignment of the texture that shows the flash. instead of outside it's now inside behind a transparent texture.

anyways: i think S3 will get some night effects and so on, so the devs need to change the lightning system of the cars (normally lightning in games will be calculated as a polygon model).
