Rear Viewing with a Key Combination
Live for Speed X had a nice feature for looking around. I could bind wheel controller keys for looking left and right. If I wanted to look behind I could just press both of those buttons simultaneously to get the rear view. This was a great way to look around with a limited amount of buttons. It's vital to the G25 where there are only 2 buttons on the wheel: http://en.lfsmanual.net/wiki/Image:G25-Wheel.jpg

LFS Y changed this. The key combination for rear viewing doesn't work anymore. How can I simulate the same functionality on the current LFS version? This is giving me a bit of a headache. The amount of crashes I have caused against my will has increased because It's harder to look around now.

(To answer any obvious replies:
1: I could bind a dedicated button for the rear view but it won't help since it would require me to remove my hand from the wheel/shifter and search for the button from the shifter module. That's not as easy as one would think. -> Most likely results in a crash.
2: The mirrors are simply too small and limited to efficiently get a good view around. -> Most likely results in a crash.)
I was also dissapointed when this feature was restricted/removed.

I think the general concensus at the time was that it was a good thing to remove things from the game that were considered unrealistic, this was at the same time 45 deg look was introduced.

After some discussion the "adjustable look angle" 45 to 90 was introduced in options, however the rear look (L+R=Rearlook) was just removed.

If you find a way of doing it with the old L+R buttons, I would use it as it helps alot with racecraft.

I imagine the hardcore part of the community will flame this thread

How about having it only for cars with decent view behind?

For instance if you turn your head round in a single seater, you're not going to see much more than a load of bodywork.

GTR cars you can see out of, just. With all the rollcage in the way you don't get the best of views out of the rear but you can still see if there's someone behind you.

Road cars, you pretty much have good vision all round.

I know mirrors are present in all cars, but being able to look behind again would be a bonus.
isnt this what mirrors are for?
When the mirrors are fully adjustable, and are actually proper mirrors (the wing mirrors are currently looking from the same position as the centre mirror), then that feature would be unrealistic. Until then, it is needed IMO
Three years with LFS and I don't think I've ever needed to look behind me. It is just too distracting anyways to look completely to the rear.

Thus, I don't think it is needed per se.

As for the realism, in any car dedicated to the track as we have, you would have a racing harness. You won't be turning your head around 180 degrees to look behind you. To do that, you would need to lift and twist the body which would be impossible strapped into a racing harness.

This is why there are passing rules. When a car leaves your mirror, he is either behind but to the side (it's ok to turn in on him at the corner), he is to the side, but has not achieved significant overlap (you have the corner at this point and it is not your fault for contact), or he is beside you with significant overlap which you can see by looking to the side (he now has the corner and contact is your fault.)

So, check to the side. If he has left your mirror, and he is beside you, you give him the right-of-way. If he is not in your side view, it's up to you whether you want to risk that he is not at your back corner with any overlap. Take that risk if you want to knowing that contact is his fault, but remember, his fault or yours, it still results in contact and possible spin/damage/crash possibly taking you out.
some people's computers aren't good enough to have high res mirrors.
Because I don't want a big floating piece of mirror in the middle of my screen. What I do want is to be able to adjust the mirrors that my car has. Then I'd be able to see exactly what I need to see, while still being able to see forwards
I know that it is less than realistic to have a button press that shows you a full rear view, and I also know how hard we try for realism, but come on... I'm attempting to drive a car by looking at a computer monitor... not that realistic! I would prefer to be able to do the Exorcist head spin to REALLY see exactly what's behind me.

My two cents...
I don't miss the rear view feature at all. If you have seatbelts, or even better, a HANS device, you won't be turning your head to watch back in any car.

Mirrors, people, mirrors!
Quote from frokki :I don't miss the rear view feature at all. If you have seatbelts, or even better, a HANS device, you won't be turning your head to watch back in any car.

Mirrors, people, mirrors!

But the trouble with the mirrors is they don't point where they should. Unless I can see part of my car in the mirror (just the edge), I have no idea where someone is in relation to me when I see them in my mirror.

The rear view should be brought in until the mirrors are fixed IMO
