Need PSU Advice (and some other things!)
As you may know, my PC keeps Blue-screening. I’m not sure what causes this, however it seems very hot in my case for no real reason (all of the temps I can monitor seem ok). Currently I think the PSU is very hot and as we all know Hiper PSU’s aren’t known for their reliability, so I’d like to replace it.

What do you think I’d need? I’m on a budget, but i’d like something that can power my PC (which in case your too lazy to click the link in my sig):
Xeon x3210 Quad Core (pretend I have a Q6600 B3 overclocked to 3.2 GHz to give me some head-room),
Asus P5K-E,
4 GB of DDR1000 RAM,
8800GTX (at stock),
6600GT,
3x 7200RPM HDD’s,
2x DVD Drives,
X-Fi.

I was thinking of something along the lines of a Corsair 550w but I don’t know if that would be good enough or not.

Also, I was thinking about trying to get a new (bigger) case and swapping my 8800GTX (aka teh heat monsta!) for something else (around the same performance, simply something that requires less power and makes less heat and fits in my case better) – any recommendations? Needs to be nVidia to work with the 6600GT. And a case, too!
If you're not arsed about modular cabling, the Antec 'Basic' PSUs are great and pretty cheap. The 500W one is usually only about 40 quid or so at most online shops.
I had a problem like this a couple weeks ago. Everytime I'd load a game or have my PC sitting for awhile it would crash or have the BSOD. I looked in my case and the fan on the PSU wasn't turning and I touched the psu and it almost burnt my hand. So maby if (i bet you did) checked the fan to see if it was turning if that was the problem.

The fan is running fine.

Sounds very similar to the issues I was having before I replaced my PSU.

Corsair 520W does me fine.

8800GTS - Old one
2 x HDD
1 x DVD

Does the problem persist is you remove some uneeded drives ?

I will post the pics up in my thread on what's causing it later - no SD card reader on my laptop.
So I'm the only one who bought an overkill PSU just to ensure that I have power for everything on my computer?

I hae a 750W Corsair PSU. It's quite good, doesnt make noise and have 2 fans so it stays quite cool even when I run a lot of stuff.

It's a bit more expensive but I blew my previous computer with an underpowered PSU so I didnt take chance for this one.

you are kidding, right?

That was a 700w PSU made by FSP who are actually pretty well known for good PSU's

Ah shite. My bad . I'll stay away from this discussion.

do you want to run sli?
or i see you have a xeon its not supported for them see down lower for specs ones with an X are not supported...

you should look at antec or corsair high end range ones

antec

Thats about all i can find in those ranges if you want to go budget then anything over a 750w on budget price should work fine just how long for thats the question....

I don't want to run SLi (my mobo won't support it) and my Xeon is called a Xeon but really it's just the (cancelled) Q6420.

Either way my PC is much more stable now since I cooled the PSU...

The 550w Corsair is £20 more than the PSU I linked to and has less power (both amps and watts).

Either way - I have solved the issue by adding more cooling on the PSU.

The components inside may not be as good quality though etc - there are many factors to a good PSU.

Still, good to hear you have solved the problem anyway
Can only recommend the VX550W really, it's not even warm to the touch after several hours of solid gaming/rendering. Glad to hear you solved the problem though

3.1 GHz?! Come on man if I can keep a X3210 B3 stable at 3.2 you can go further than that
LOL I'm getting there, m'kay Gonna push 3.6, hopefully (though unlikely to be very stable) I can get 4

Temps are still below 25 on all cores at idle, and never above 40 under load. Quite chuffed with that, it's still 700Mhz above stock
Nope, it refuses to boot after going above 3.2, yet it's running ice cold at 3.15, and perfectly stable during/after 6 hours of Prime95 on all 4 cores. I'm stumped

More vCore? BIOS settings? RAM speeds / timings / voltages?

Welcome to the world of OC'ing
The motherboard keeps the RAM timings and the CPU clock seperate, the RAM timings didn't move after OC'ing the CPU. No idea on vCore, never touched it. I just upped the bus speed. Does it need more juice after a certain amount of clock increase?

Dude - read up on overclocking. No offence but you don't know shit!
