Quote from ramirom :the real solution is real surruound sound, and stereo.

No, the solution is stereo with the option of binaural audio. There are more people that have headphones then 5.1 Surround sound speakers, so if you want to cater to the majority then surround sound does not help you do that. 5.1 Surround sound is useless. And besides, if one can afford a 5.1 Surround Sound speaker system, they can spend $20USD on a pair of noise canceling headphones.
its not the same man, they are opposite worlds (speakers and headphones)

and i have a good pair of studio headphones, but for gaming i want to use my speakers.

besides i dont want to hurt my hearing.
Quote from wheel4hummer :I meant with proper binaural sound.

That's why LFS needs to implement binaural, two channel sound. You hear from two channels, so a binaural recording is the way to go. 5.1 Channel sound cannot give you the same input that binaural two channel sound can.

whats the difference between 3d sound and binaural when it comes to games. i will admit i know almost nothing about binaural sound except it seems to be more of a recording technique that uses two microphones.

too me for this to be implemented you would need to follow the same steps for 3d sounds. plus what about the sound aesthetics simulation? binaural doesn't address things like sound aesthetics attenuation high frequencies becoming less audible as the distance increase.

Suggestion: turn down the volume.
its not about volume, you cant be always using headphones.
Quote from ramirom :its not about volume, you cant be always using headphones.

I think it is okay to use headphones for a certain amount of time per day, depending on the SPL in your ears. If you keep it below 90dB, you can listen to it for 8 hours per day according to the US Government. Normal conversation is at 60dB. As long as you have noise canceling headphones, somewhere between 60dB-80dB is plenty, and you could listen to it constantly, 24hrs a day without hearing loss.

EDIT: For example, right now this is how my volume is set:

0.25% Master, and 0.25% Wave. Multiply them together and you get 0.125%. That is 1/8th volume, and I can hear everything just fine. That's not going to cause hearing damage.
My x-fi xtreme gamer soundcard has a "smart volume" option that cuts off to loud sounds can be handy sometimes
i understand , but because you like to use the volume so low and headphones, doesnt mean all the people have to do same.

besides with speakers you can turn the volume higher, i like it more.

im back to one of my initial points, is about user options people.

the game should come with, stereo, surround and heck even binaural.

i dont want to let anyone off the boat.

but i feel ive been excluded because there is no surround at all.
Quote from ramirom :besides with speakers you can turn the volume higher, i like it more.

No you can't. You are just turning it up so that you can hear it at the same level that you would be hearing it out of headphones. It does not matter if the sound is 1m away from you or right against your ear. Exceeding 90dB in your ear canal for more then 8 hours a day can permanently damage your hearing. Whether you are using speakers or headphones does not matter.

So, does it just turn down the volume when there are loud sounds, or is it more of a dynamic range compressor?
I hear sound from all my speakers while playing lfs.
its simulated surround
Quote from Luke.S :I hear sound from all my speakers while playing lfs.

That's because the rear channels are duplicates of the front channels, and the center channel is just a merge of the left and right. It's not actual surround sound. Depends how your computer is setup, I guess.

Quote from ramirom :its simulated surround

All surround sound is simulated to some extent.
Quote from wheel4hummer :So does it just turn down the volume when there are loud sounds, or is it more of a dynamic range compressor?

Im not sure how it works but i think it smooths out the difference between loud sounds and tiny sounds. And it does it for every sound source.
Some games have a very loud soundfield so you must immediately lower the volume and others you have to increase the volume.

And for example in 3d shooters you can hear an ei sneak on to you very clear but when the firing starts its not that loud boom that make your ears cry for help it works wery well and if the sounds are to loud to be healthy it cuts off the peak a bit
