Here's a thread that I am generally interested in and I hold an opposing point of view. I would like to express that point of view, because this is a forum and forums by their very nature are intended for discussion.

Would that be OK by you? If not, I'd recommend you avoid forums.

How about, this is one cool fresh game, and nobody is interested in some bitter hatred-filled comments... you know, this is not a place to play mister smart a**, i'm sick of those one-liner smart a** comments... that all should suposedly agree with..

Boris, I have no particular problem with you, personally, but in this thread you come across as pretty ignorant.

First you ask "Anyone from here hyped about LBP as i am?" - key word: "hyped".

You follow it up with "look all the videos i posted, you will understand the hype".

The defining moment is where you say to Shotglass "why all the hate, it can't be some stupid reason like you don't own and don't intend to buy a PS3, some 360 fanboy or something like that?"

Point being that he isn't a "fanboy" at all, you are.

Maybe some of us just aren't naive enough to swallow pre-release hype bullshit from big-budget developers any more because we know from experience that every single time it's a crock of shit.

I was joking about that, i think i remember him owning a 360 from GTA IV thread, i may be wrong... it was a joke, cause it did sounded fanboyish, like comments from some gamer kids on various gaming forums..
I'm not a fanboy, i'm just hyped about this game for couple of years now, and i get agrevated by these comments, if your not interested in it, then i'm not interested in your comment if you just watched like 10 seconds of one vid and rushed to post your hate, which is pretty common here on LFS forum...
Now you're making assumptions. I saw the early gameplay videos a couple of years ago too, and it doesn't seem much different now. Why wasn't it released two years ago?

I think: Because they've been busy bolting on the world-building kit, and the webcam gimmick, and generally making it look more "community"-oriented because developers these days think collaborative web 2.0-style content can sell anything (and they may be right), or because they realised that although it looks pretty when you take a close look it was actually going to be a very limited old-school platformer game and it would cost a fortune to get good reviews.

At least they're showing actual gameplay videos and not completely unrelated 3D renders - a novelty in the game industry these days - but to me the gameplay videos just don't look much fun. What made you so excited about it?

Please don't say "watch the videos and you'll understand" because I've seen a few videos and I really don't understand.

for what its worth i dont own any console never have owned any console and probably never will

stop with the hate nonsense youre making yourself look like a drama queen

Well, if you don't see what's so cool about it from the vids, i don't see how anyone can explain it in words
Maybe the fact that anything you create is playable and has real physics... You use a piece of wood, you put 4 wheels on it and you have a skateboard, not a static skateboard, but the one that reacts to every object and characther... you can make all kinds of things, from the simplest levels like that spline-rider to some complex shi*... Everything reacts to whatever you create... you make a ramp, cover it with ice and you'll have trouble walking on it, it will be slipery, etc..
I can't help but think that the two of you just put a glimpse on one of the videos and rushed to hate
When it's released, will it be PS Store download-able, or is it on sale on disc? Looks good, I'm gonna get it for the lulz

It will be Blu-Ray only...
Actually, if you can build stuff then it might be a bit like this excellent Flash game:

Are you sure you can acctually get a plank of wood and put wheels on it? When i watched the videos it seemed like you could only build worlds from pre created objects. So you wouldnt be able to just take a plank of wood and put wheels on it :/
Boris, ignore the moaners, they just dont appreciate the same things others do, some love FPS after FPS and some dont, its just personal taste, although i also find it odd & irritating listerning to someone who finds watching one video really boring, then say they've watched a few, and each time insists its crap, but is really intent on doing little more than coming back to kick up a fuss & cause some controversy or something.

Im pretty sure it was first announced at GDC 2007, it certainly wasnt as far back as 2006.
The first time they demonstrated it to the gaming press they did a ~15min demo, the first half explained the basic concept of the game, the creation side of things and how the world & characters interact. Then they moved out of the stageing area of that which brought them to the level which they show in last link you give from GDC2007. They actually did a proper step-by-step walk-through, explaining and showing different aspects rather than rushing through it as you see there.
I cant remember where i got it from, but theres a HD version of this first video to download, i went in search of it a few months back with it being one of the better videos and (to my knowledge) the first showing and it has the full developer commentry and IMO best of all, you've got the press who are there watching who are audiable in the background, lapping it up, laughing and cheering the things being done. How many games can do that??

Since seeing that first video when it came out, i've geniunely believed it'll be the biggest console game of this generation, it'll be the game which takes the industry to the next level with its 'play, create, share' philosophy. There may be games which sell more or people consider better, but in terms of taking that next step into the online world, with user generated content which is easily accessable, i think it'll spark similar movement from other developers.
But i can understand people not being fussed about it, its all about what you want to get out of a game, what you find fun, and how you like spending your time.
Im desperately hoping the EU beta testers get to run ragged in the LBP world sometime before October, but its looking less likely as the days pass by, but it'll be a day 1 purchase for me thats for sure.

I'll have a dig round for the proper GDC07 video, its well worth a watch, especially if you already like the look of it
Might already know, but they used LBP in E3 2008 to make their traditionally boring part of the Sony conference mildly entertaining, having a sackboy go through a level with certain announcements of sale forecasts, minor announcements etc all done with LBP's simple physics triggers and whatnot. Far more interesting than the slideshow presentation MS & Nintendo have given the last 2 years when ive watched their conferences.
Quote from Migz :Are you sure you can acctually get a plank of wood and put wheels on it? When i watched the videos it seemed like you could only build worlds from pre created objects. So you wouldnt be able to just take a plank of wood and put wheels on it :/

You have materials, stickers, and mechanical objects (possibly another catagory, and possibly other 'labels' for the 3 ive mentioned) but these make up the content within the game, as well as some Media Molecule created items (like the skateboard in the GDC'07 vid).

Materials would be wood, and similar surfaces, which you would select a shape (rectangle, circle etc) and then you pick the scale, and then it exists in your world. You can cut sections out, and once your done you seem to 'release' it and it becomes real in your level, acting under normal physical forces.

Stickers are exactly that, ways to decorate items, there doesnt seem to be anything else to them. These are '3D', they will fold around items, the original GDC demo shows them applying comical eyes and mouth onto an orange and them rolling the orange around with this silly smiley face on it.

Mechanics are items like motors, pins, springs, hinges, and they create the more real items, if you have 2 peices of wood, put a pin through it, and then motorise it, the 2 peices of wood would rotate at the point where the pin runs through it. hinges & springs provide interation as you'd expect them to IRL i guess.
They've created some really bizarre 'monsters' which are done with really basic tools everyone will have access to, and the ideas get stranger and more creative all the time.
i'll dig some vids out which show these aspects properly, and i guess i'll check the vids in the first post too hehe

Thats the exact video i have in HD (720x405) in h264 format (so it plays on the PS3 directly) but im not sure where i got the link from in order to download it directly (194mb) but im pretty sure it wasnt from Game Trailers, despite the fact that it 100% IS their trailer.

okay, was off their site, heres the direct link:

Same video as linked above this, just a downloadable HD version.

Well worth a watch. Im gonna look at the PAX walkthrough vids, see whats new

I'm positive i first saw LBP back in 2006...

@ Migz

Yes, you can use an orange and put a wheels on it, and you have a orange with wheels
Killzone 2's CGI trailer was the big thing for E3 2006 IIRC, and it certainly wasnt that far back, and i also included a link which covers the actual Sony conference from the GDC'07 which covers the announcement. MM started up early 2006, so theres no way they could have made Rag Doll Kung Fu AND all they initially showed within 6-7 months.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Littlebigplanet
LittleBigPlanet (sometimes abbreviated to LBP; and developed under the working title The Next Big Thing) is an upcoming puzzle platformer and world creation video game for the PlayStation 3, first announced on 7 March 2007, by Phil Harrison at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California.[5][6][7] It is being developed by Media Molecule, a British company founded in part by Rag Doll Kung Fu creator Mark Healey, will be published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and is due for release in October 2008. A public beta version of the game was previously scheduled for the summer of 2008,[8] but it was later announced that only private beta testing would take place, with the possibility of a publicly available demo before the full game is released[9]. However, in a later interview, Alex Evans, Co-Founder of Media Molecule, said that a beta would be released in September 2008 describing it as "a public beta, but limited at the same time." He goes on to say "We will disclose that info when we’re ready."[10]

Scary stuff I got the chills now as i'm certain it was wayyyy back when i first saw it, i hadn't followed the console games, PS3 or any of that stuff in 2007, that was last year ffs, wierd, totally wierd... but nevermind i guess you're right and my mind is playing tricks on me..
yeah, it feels more like 2005 when the Killzone2 trailer first came along and the nay-sayers all said it was BS, impossible to do, and the real game would look nothing like that, but they proved that wrong.

Hmm, Wikipedia says it was E3 2005, so im not sure what the big 2006 thing was, i was certain there was 2 years between the CGI trailer and the 99% identical trailer done with real time game footage.

Seems like 2006's was pretty empty, nothing much other than final technical specs leading up to the launch, couple of other things like warhawk, resistance etc

Yep, that's the vid where i first saw LBP I could SWEAR that was in the same time as KZ2 trailer and all that initial PS3 hype... really really wierd, but anyway, i recomend everyone to watch that one, that's the best LBP "explanation" you can get, everything is in there...

Btw Paul, what version are you getting and do you know the differences beatwen them? I know that multiplayer is region free, as are the user created levels, but i think that official DLC will be region locked, that's a bit stupid, like "God of War" level will be locked only to USA version or USA PSN Store, i hope i'm wrong about that one, if you know any details feel free to post...
It's a fun looking game for sure, and I suppose a cool way to make this type of gameplay more accessible for the casual folk. I'll definitely recommend it to my brother for his PS3, even though I know he won't like sandbox-type gameplay, just so I can have a go at no expense but it'll do nothing that Gary's Mod hasn't already done.

To the less enthusiastic people in this thread: sandbox gameplay is something you either love or hate. Personally I've spent upwards of an entire non-stop day in Gary's Mod (HL2) with a friend, building partially destructible forts with fully working, wooden trebuchets/catapults to bomb each other from the other side of the map. Or building a sort of dry-dock, and carefully letting a destructible wooden ship down into the water, only to see it fall apart after 30 seconds of sailing. This sort of thing either grabs you, or leaves you with a desire for more structure and less fiddly 'work'.

I suppose if you're on either side it will be incredibly hard to realise what the appeal, or lack of appeal is all about. Let's all keep that in mind in this thread
I thought "sandbox" games means open roaming world, like GTA?

You can say that this is Gary's mod in a platformer, as one reviewer said: "If you really need comparisons, the game is like Line Rider meets Garry's Mod meets Super Mario Bros. meets an orgasm."
Never played Gmod myself, but watched plenty of videos, it's cool and all, you can create all sort of things, but it's not exactly comparable, first of all, LBP has a lot simplier GUI, which makes it much easier to create something in no-time... Correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think you can create exactly anything you want in G'mod, for example, make a huge Hollywood sign out of wood and set it on fire, maybe you can using bunch of boxes or something like that, but you can't exactly "draw" shapes, can you?
Cool thing about LBP are also elements, like fire, gas, ice, helium, and hopefully water at a later date... Can you imagine the awesomeness of having real-time water flowing in your level, interacting with all objects in it's path? but i don't know if that's exactly doable with curent technology, but they did said "if people want water, we'll add water"
Sandbox generally means you can do what you like, MSFS can be considered a sandbox, so can GTA, if some respects, LFS aswell.
I consider GTA to be more of an open-world game. A sandbox is usually a place where you build things and play with them, and that's what I consider to be the possibilities of a sandbox-game as well

As for the limitations of Gmod - they're just the limitations set by the Source engine as it was implemented in HL2, so it's not possible to draw shapes or create flowing water, but other than that and some other minor other limitations, you can do almost anything with it. There are also some big levels that (quite poorly) mimic the solar system; you start on earth and you can build a big rocket that takes you off into space, where gravity = 0, and then you can fly off and land on different planets, again with their own custom gravity.

Little Big Planet obviously won't have the limitations of an engine that wasn't designed for the game, so therefore it will be much more accessible and easy-to-use - that's what gives the game its appeal I suppose
While not everyone is going to like this game, I can definitely see the appeal. Physics is almost a done deal in games these days but there are still avenues where you can take things in interesting and novel directions. The strength of LBP though seems to be in it's support of the community creation/sharing aspect, the tools are just getting better and better for this stuff all the time- be interesting to see what comes out of it.

One of the most exciting moments in recent gaming technological history for me was an early Half Life 2 video, watching a mattress slide down some stairs. Of course that doesn't sound fun or interesting at all really, yet it still dropped my jaw
I would love to see artist like you EK having a go at creating some levels...
