Something didn't install right, i had the same thing happen to me on my laptop. But, i had a back CD that came with the laptop. If you have that use it. But why would you have auto updates disabled? The only time i have seen people have problems with these updates is when they have pirated OS's. I am not saying you do but most people that have this problem is because their OS is ripped or Pirated. I am guessing that the update might of did something to a file, either the update didn't install right or something got deleted..

Its going to stay in JPG, you have to (if using photoshop) use the layer option multiply or something like that and it will put it as a shadow kit. You should be ok after that.
