Links fly around on IRC man, if i'm bored enough i click them in hopes of porn, all i got was the LFS logo :P
I'm glad to see its been worked out, i registered to see if theres any forums, but didnt see any so i just let it be. I didnt think to PM one of the mods there though, good job guys.
A search didnt find any threads on this already, so i figured you might want to know. http://www.speed.cd is a torrent site i ran across, and noticed its logo is quite familiar.
What CPU are you getting? I assume some sort of Core 2 Duo, based on your chipset choice. If its a high-end extreme model, or quad core, you might want to step it up just in case.
I am currently using an older thermaltake 420w PSU in my system, with 2 SATA-II HDDs(500gb & 250gb) and 1 DVD drive. I'm sure my 7800GT requires less juice than your 8800, but then again, the new Core 2 Duos are easy on power consumption, compared to AMD which I currently use.
You have relatively few devices, just 1 HDD and 1 DVD drive. So you are probably fine with a 420w PSU with that setup. But if you plan on adding another HDD or two in the future, i'd upgrade the PSU when that time comes.
You are lucky, I had 5 roommates in college, all pro gamers. When 1 person started a download on our crappy 1.5mb DSL, everyone screamed about the lag and how they were getting killed. Luckily i was a IT major, so I just threw together an old PC and easily setup a Linux router with QoS and traffic shaping. Man its nice to live alone now, lol!
Many people call their broadband "DSL" regardless of whether or not it it actually is DSL.
The provider matters because different providers can use different protocols to communicate betwen the DSLAM and your modem. It appears that you know your provider uses PPPoE, PPPoA or IPoA, so pretty much any generic ADSL modem will work. Some ISPs use a bridge rather than a router, which in most cases requires a proprietary modem, but obviously you know what your provider requires.
That Netgear router looks good, it lacks QoS which may be useful with so many clients sharing one ADSL line, but if you don't need that capability, theres no need to worry.
Also, you do realize that router does not have a wireless access point right? Maybe you just pasted the wrong product code.
I'd need more details of your needs before making a specific recommendation. You say you need a "ADSL modem" ??? If that is specifically something you need, and not just a regular ethernet router, then that will limit your selection.
It would help to know these things:
What type of broadband service do you have? DSL? Cable?
What company provides your broadband service?
What is your current Router and/or Modem?
How many clients connect via ethernet cable and how many via wireless?
Who uses the other computers on your network? You may want QOS capability.
Regardless, I'd steer clear of anything D-Link. My past experiences with their equipment have been unsatisfactory. Linksys equipment have been the most reliable for me. If you need more speed at a longer range, you may want to consider 802.11n technology.
Kidding, I like your idea though. I've always wanted a more robust mouse. Stuff like a small analog control, like the PSP has, for my thumb. More buttons, put in the right places, is always nice.
You need to extract LFS again if you are missing files. If you are getting corrupt file errors with every download mirror you try, you may have either malware or even bad RAM.
At the very top of the options screen is 2 buttons, one is "Mouse/Keyboard" and the other is "Wheel/Joystick." Obviously you want to select Wheel/Joystick to configure your G25.
Spend some time and actually look at all the options, with a little common sense, you can easily setup the wheel for LFS.
Firefox + Adblock, need i say more? IE7 isn't bad, better than IE6, but it doesn't stack up to Firefox in any way. I like how IE7 looks, so i just use a FF theme that makes it look like IE and match the rest of Vista.
Back on topic: I've had bad experiences with the nvidia firewall as well. My mobo supports it but its never worked the way i wanted it to.
Not entirely true. Sequential is only forced when using single seater cars. The GTR class tin-tops allow you to use the H-Pattern shifter. All 3 cars you will find in the demo will allow you to make use of your clutch and shifter.
With my G25, newly acquired TrackIR, and a little modification to my desk to place the shifter lower and closer to me, LFS is an amazing experience. The only other game that even comes close is GTR2, which fully takes advantage of the G25 and TrackIR as well. But LFS provides much more realistic handling IMO. LFS S2 license is well worth the price, and much more is to come with S3.
LFS will probably run OK on your system. I wouldn't add more than 3-4 AIs though, more than that and it'll lower your framerates significantly. Just upgrading your video card won't suffice. Your CPU will still act as a bottleneck. Best bet is to save up a 300-500 bucks and do a whole CPU/Mobo/RAM/Vid upgrade. For now, I don't think it'll be necessary for running LFS, I'd definitely go for a S2 license before you spend the big bucks on a serious upgrade.
The only way i've been able to get it to work under Vista is to install the Profiler, which doesn't detect anything. Then reboot. Then the wheel shows up properly in the Vista control panel under Game Controlers. The setup in there is like the profiler, allows changing of the rotation degrees and such. But the profiler itself does not run properly, so I can't setup profiles for my different racing games :\
The G25 box says it supports Windows Vista, so there's no reason we should have to wait till Vista is released publicly for it to work. Or else wouldn't that be false advertising?
I contacted Logitech about it, they took 3 weeks to reply so I didn't even bother.
Has anyone been able to get decent gaming performance out of Vista? LFS is always pinned at 60fps in XP(vsync) but in Vista, with the nVidia drivers released yesterday for the RTM build, I get like 25fps when racing 6+ others. GTR2 with 27 AIs is unplayable. I've tried turning off Aero and Sidebar, and but it doesn't affect it at all.
My computer doesn't completely suck. AMD 64 X2 4200, 2GB Dual Channel, 250GB SATA2, nVidia 7800GT 256mb PCI-E. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm dualbooting XP untill I can figure something out.
I know that the Vista Ultimate retail version allows reinstalls. But OEM version i'm not sure about. But if you have an OEM version from buying a retail PC from DELL/HP/etc, the disk will likely just be a re-imaging tool, not an actual Vista OEM disk. Re-imaging shouldn't be a problem.
So, if you build your own PC, and buy an OEM version with it. The smart thing to do would be to make a norton ghost image, or something similar, after you install and activate it.
Its extra work that should be unecessary for a home PC. They are just making things more difficult for legitimate owners, while pirated copies will not have issues with this at all.
Son of a! So thats what that last dialog box was about. It said something about software protection, and needing to install extra libraries. There's no way i'm lettn' that crap stay on my computer.
I think its decent for an arcade style racer. Its as far from a sim as you can get, but its pretty entertaining. I hear the fun is the online racing and custom tracks, but I haven't tried it yet.
That's not what a windows error looks like. It tells you what type of error, where it occured, and what caused it. Then you use a wonderful tool called Google to solve it.
Information is useless if you aren't smart enough to know how to use it.
To get back on topic. I think Vista will be better than XP, but not until its first service pack. By then most software will support it. I'll wait a few months atleast before purchasing it.
Most likely its the RTM which has been floating around the net for a while now. Vista has been out of beta for a few months.
To the kid who seems to know nothing about computers (other than cut&paste) that posted above me:
If you know how to properly setup Vista or even XP you won't get pop-ups, wizards, or freezing. The eye candy can be removed, and even a P.O.S. computer can run it. But if you want to run "any of todays programs" and "QUICKLY" a faster computer always helps. So you might want to consider that TechnoXTREME 999000000 series PC, i bet it'd be cheaper than 5 million quid on newegg.
I'm Finish, Norwegian, German, and English. But since i was born and raised in the US, i'm American. Well, if i'm overseas, i tell people i'm Canadian to avoid hearing yet another bad Bush joke.
I disagree with Shift_, most Americans are morons. Why do you think we have to put "this is not a toy" on all plastic bags.
