11 and a half years here. I remember being 14 and playing the demo for months before getting my parents credit card to see what all the S1 fuss was about. I had my own card to pay for S2.

I remember the good old days of the GTI round blackwood. In fact, that's still my preferred layout, strangely. That or the FOX.

I remember the first time I drove Fern Bay - I was amazed. The first time me and a friend set up >REVS<, had a good 6 or 7 members during the heydey! The first time racing with a wheel, then upgrading to the G25...

Unfortunately I've fallen out of touch with the game over the last 5 or 6 years or so, need to get my G25 set up again with the Macbook to be fair, relive some classic racing.

This game has been a huge part of my life, even convincing me to build my very own 'race' car for trackdays.

Here's to the next 11 years!

A small factoid for you.

Lets consider that S3 is finished in July next year (2014).

S1 was released in 2003, "S3" was announced in 2009. That's 6 years.
July 2014 marks 6 years since "S3" was announced.

That means that it has taken the same amount of time to develop S3 than it took to release S1 and S2!

I Dont understand you sry.

edit: but after playing LFS (about 120 000 km you has driven ) you will nowhere find the same fun (physically)

GT5 with a G25 is absolutely fantastic in terms of handling, physics, and of course graphics. I'll never forget LFS, its still a fantastic sim, but is starting to look dated when compared with other sims, and with a patch that was supposed to be out in a week just under two years ago it does make you question the development speed. I have no doubt in my mind that the patch will refresh LFS especially with the new tyre physics but surely a test patch wouldn't be a bad idea, or at least more regular and detailed updates than "we're still working on it". Estimated times are good too - just no release dates.

I think someone is trolling to be honest.

I don't know how any developer could have full support from Skoda Auto for a new car that they don't even make.

The last time I checked, Skoda make the Fabia vRS, not the Skoda Fabia RS. Therefore, I think you have some re-designing to do!

Surely you'd have to get permission from the Volkswagen Audi Group too, remember that Skoda are owned by the VAG!

Quote from danthebangerboy :Yep, danny spotted it!

Dont download shite and you will not have any problems

I just have to add to this that viruses don't just "come", they are downloaded by people who are too immature to be using the internet wisely, or those who fail to keep on top of maintenance tasks which should be undertaken by everybody. No exceptions.

I'm guessing you've disabled your antivirus software?

Now here's the problem. I don't believe that a 3rd party mod would contain a virus that only affects LFS graphics. I can't see it happening.

What I think has happened, is that you've FUBAR'ed your graphics card, not realised what the actual problem is, then decided to systematically destroy your PC.

What card do you have? Do we perhaps think that the skin resolution was too high for his graphics card to handle, which prompted it to overheat, corrupting the display? Perhaps using a part of corrupted Graphics memory that exacerbated the situation?

The lesson here, is that you MUST ensure that you learn to use the internet responsibly. I can't tell you how many machines I've personally had to waste man-hours on cleaning machines from virus infections caused by irresponsible computer users who simply refuse to learn how to use the internet responsibly, and learn how to determine if something looks dodgy.

At the moment, I'm struggling to comprehend what you now need help with? Restoring your files? If so, I'm not sure its wise to inform you about deep file restoration if you're willing to download dodgy files from a result in Google.

If its just LFS you now need help with, cut your losses and install a new version from the website. Don't use unauthorised modifications as you can corrupt your machine.

And lastly, for the love of God download some decent antivirus and firewall software and keep it up to date and enabled!

When was the last time you used Windows Update out of interest?

Quote :after this uninstalled all of my files (not in recycling, just disappeared) my computer wouldnt not start back up. it would just stay a blue screen with random large pixles and lines.

Definitely graphics card related, unless the "random large pixels and lines" are infact a BSOD error code.....

I don't long for the Scirocco, I don't mind that there is a delay in releasing this patch - All I want the devs to do is give us little updates like they did in the old days. Why would these be a problem now?

Small S2 progress report
We are pleased to report that S2 development is going well!

You can see three new cars in the screenshots. The XR GTR, the RA and the Formula V8.

Recent developments in the program include skid marks, better smoke and better online reliability, as seen in the new S1 patch. Also we have implemented a new tutorial system which is quite fun to work through, and very good for people who are new to Live for Speed. Various improvements have been made to the tyre physics which make the cars handle much better than they used to. It's easier to get the power down and go in a rear wheel drive car, and this is more realistic - in S1 you need to be more careful than you do in real life.

Now that the S1 Patch H update is complete, Scawen can carry on with the tyre temperatures and wear. Eric will be working on the remaining cars and then onto some final track updates. And finally we will reach Alpha stage!

>Release date and new car announcement! Hello Racers!

This time we have a very nice update for you - we are now able to give you a release date with reasonable accuracy! And on top of that, we will also announce the long awaited "6th car", the LX6!
Concerning the release, we have decided on a three week plan : This week - finalising to a first full version
---> Alpha Next week - testing / bug fixing / minor improvements
---> Beta Final week - thorough testing - no development allowed
---> Release Live for Speed S1 should then be released during the week starting Mon 14 July. The LX6 : We've added some new screenshots on our site, including some of the new LX6 - the quickest car in the S1 release. Being a lightweight car with a powerful engine, the LX6 has great acceleration and quick steering, resulting in having superior laptimes compared with all the other cars available. We must point out that although we originally said that a more powerful rwd car would be included, at that time we weren't exactly sure which kind of car it would be. When we had decided on the LX6, we changed that text to "a quicker rwd car", because in fact the LX6 has less absolute power than the turbo car, but is faster in all situations on the the track.

It's really fun to drive, and takes some concentration to handle!

Make sure you visit the screenshots section for many new screenshots! We look forward to getting S1 finished very soon!

>LFS Progress Report Hello Racers, it's again time to let you know how we're doing!

The success and lack of major bugs in the E4 patch has allowed me to avoid bug-fixing and so I've been working with Victor all week on the new unlocking system. It's going well and I'm now onto the parts which are inside LFS and will store the cars and tracks in a secure way. It's quite hard to design but I'm making progress, and now the methods to use and how it fits together are quite clear.

Here is a screen shot of five of the cars from the S1 release including the demo test cars. There's one car model we aren't showing just yet although it is in final testing stage.

Eric has been updating the South City track and found some areas that he decided needed more or better scenery and he's added a new pit lane as well. He's nearly finished with that so it's looking better and more polished, which allows him to move onto finishing the Drag Strip, which is his biggest task left.
So... all in all we are getting closer! We're still not able to give a release date - polishing and finishing is a strange thing where there's always a bit more to do than you expected. Anyway, it's not long until we enter a final testing stage, which will be very thorough, because S1 must go out as a high quality product.

Some new screenshots can be seen in the screenshots section.

Thanks for your support and being patient with us as you wait for S1!

>Progress Report
Hello Racers!

Just a little info about how things are going - patch 0.2E is very nearly ready with the new replay files and some fixes and improvements. We plan to release a test patch E1 in the next couple of days. With this patch, the new automated Blackwood hotlap tables will be opened!

As usual, things have taken a little longer than we hoped, but the results are good. We are arranging the new fixed ip connection for the master server which will hopefully be installed very soon. Eric has finished all cars except some texturing on the last car. Then he has a few holes to fill on South City, because Fern Bay is finished now. With the release of this patch I am free to do the final code needed for S1 - the authentication and unlocking systems.

We have put up some more screenshots of the new RB4 which is of course part of the S1 release - see them in the screenshots section on our site.

Thanks for being patient with us with the S1 release, it's getting closer!

> Patch 0.1W
Hello racers, a new compatible patch 0.1W is available.

I saw a master server error on Sunday and in fact all LFS versions since the beginning have not been able to view a list of games if there were more than 32 hosts. So this patch was needed. I put in some improvements from the dev version as well. Here's the list of changes, most notably the multiplayer distant cars fps speedup option (on by default) and exact remote player lap times.

FIX : Guest could not receive more than 32 games from master
FIX : Crash when using settings with long names
FIX : Warning if music file name is too long
View Option : Multiplayer FPS improvement (no update distant cars)
View Option : Multiplayer car draw distance
Remote player lap times are now exact (all need new version)
Lagged cars vanish instead of going off madly
SHIFT + M : Mirror on / off
Single player input update rate improved
Mirror FOV fixed at 60 degrees

(0.2 is still coming along - progress is good with new features still being added but i must estimate it's still at least a week away).

> New patch T Here's another fully compatible patch for 0.1.

This was quick patch made to support mouse look or look devices that can work as a mouse (right mouse button sets to center), and also to fix the bug where a wrecker using a corrupted setup could cause a crash on non-dedicated hosts or guests.

View Option : Mouse look support (alternative to view with steer)
Minor sound improvement
Minor keyboard steer improvement at low speed
Avoid crash when remote player uses corrupted setup

There is a new full version 0.1B!
No patch from version 0.04, you have to get the full version. But there's a nice surprise or two in there... To keep your settings from 0.04 versions you will need to copy over the following files : cfg.txt
data\misc\cfg.sta
data\misc\fkeys.msg
data\misc\drv.nam
data\settings\*.set
Please report any problems you come across, in theory it should be more reliable and has worked well under testing. Hopefully no more ghost players and wierd bugs...
Have fun!

Apart from being limited to BL1, I've had some of the best races of my LFS career on Demo servers - since demoers have to register, the racing has become a lot better there, so don't write them off just because its demo!

If you feel there's a gap in the market for a particular combo, then host one - its not hard, and would stop you having to rely on other people to host games for you.

"Gripping" is just such a crappy term, I've not heard it used before except in Need For Speed, where I first heard it and thought "What the ****?".

If you call motor racing "Gripping" I think you're childish and have no experience of racing outside of playing an arcade game with a controller.

No touring car commentators have ever used the term "gripping", neither in F1, NASCAR, Trucks, or any of the events I've spectated at Brands Hatch.

In conclusion - if you call it "gripping", I call you a "cock".

Quote from GothaR_SVK :dontpannic: this is what I am talking about...I still like LFS and I will, but now I am not waiting for next patch. It comes when it comes and then I will be kindly surprised. In january I visited lfs.net every day just to check, if there is new patch, now I just use to get on the forum. Hype is over, I am just regular player with no expectations now

Same for me. I got fed up of checking if the patch was there and instead of whinging about it on the forums, I set LFSWorld SMS alerts to tell me when the patch has been released and still race as I normally would. The patch being delayed isn't a reason to stop playing LFS totally, it still is the best racing simulator out there and nothing is going to change that, however if the developers keep quiet, many racers will fear that development has stopped. 4 months ago, the patch was a week away, thats the problem here.

Quote from Dopey :I think its getting to be a little retarded on how the hipe is being portrayed about this damn car.

Not all of us are only waiting for the Scirocco.

For the record, the patch contains much more than that, if you use the test patches, you'd find out.

I'm not concerned about the scirocco, I'm merely concerned about the total lack of updates since Scawen told us about moving house, thats 2 and a half months in itself - 10 weeks!

Since December, we've had one update from the developers, and that didn't mention how far they've come with the patch, so how are we to know development is still happening? I notice that there's a thread here, one that we're posting in, that the devs could pop in and just tell us how they're getting on and a vague hint of how long it may take from this date.

The delay of the patch isn't the problem here, the complete silence from the developers is the problem. One starts to think it will be December 2009 when its released. Considering we're into April now, we're out of "Early 2009".

I thought you may have missed it. I also work in IT and know exactly what you're talking about!

Thanks for the link, interesting read! Although, I think Scawen has actually, in his post, personified the general feeling around the community.

Quote :I made my order which would be activated in 7 to 10 days. Amazingly, once again, I was served with a wall of silence. None of the promised emails, text messages and letters informing me of the progress. Even more amazingly, when phoning customer services a few times, I was informed that my order was proceeding as planned. Total disregard for the fact that I told them I was not receiving any of the progress reports and the order tracker was reporting a fault. Anyway, once the activation date had passed, Virgin Media finally admitted there was a problem, and it had supposedly been due to someone entering my old address with my new phone number.

Now obviously the details are incorrect, however I think thats probably what the community are scared of - that the patch will never happen.

NOTE TO POTENTIAL FLAMERS: Obviously I don't think this!

Quote from ebola :I suppose its nice to read a post that is not whining and one that some thought has gone into!

However, it is not a complete wall of silence since Scawen did explain that he moved house and had some ISP problems. There is a good chance that this post may have passed you by because I think it moved down the forum relatively quickly. If you did miss this post then I can appreciate where you're coming from because it would definitely seem like a long time without any info.

Personally I think we've got to be pretty close but who knows, I think we've learnt its best not to speculate.

Regards

I never saw that post unfortunately! That would explain why I thought the gap without news was too big! I visit the forum only rarely due to the amount of silly threads that come up and flaming newbies. I've been racing on LFS for nigh on 5 years I suppose now, and no matter what happens, I'll still be racing here. I've seen the release of S1, the release of S2, and the interim cars too, some expected, most unexpected. I think the main reason why many people are/were upset was down to the fact that the devs mentioned a release date. One thing to learn/know in IT is never, ever mention a date that "work" will be finished by, if you miss it, your "customers" get very upset. (That wasn't a direct dig by the way - I work as an IT technician and know how these guys feel)

Quote from SamH :It's the devs doing precisely that that's caused all these pathetic accusations of the devs ruining peoples' lives - giving us a simple status report, mid-December. This whole thread is reason enough to never ever make that mistake again.

How on earth did you come to that conclusion, Sam?

This is quoted from the website.

Quote :We are pleased to announce that we plan to release the new VW Scirocco in Live for Speed during the week ending Friday 19th December.

To me, and I'm not blind, that looks like a planned release date of Friday the 19th December.

If it were a simple status report, you'd be looking at something like

Quote :Hello Racers! Just to let you know we're still working on releasing the latest patch as soon as we can iron out the bugs. We've got the number of bugs down now, so we are closer to releasing the update.

Please tell me that you can see the difference there Sam. I would have thought someone with your caliber would have been able to see my point, however I fear that my well reasoned debate has fallen on deaf ears.

http://www.garry.tv/?p=829

See for me, even though this is kind of retrospective, is fantastic communication from developer/s to audience. Obviously I wouldn't expect as much detail to be put into the LFS devs status updates, but something a little more firm than "There's bugs and we're going to release it in early 2009".

Quote from runeman :Nothing is owed to us, they either show us or not show us. If it's going to be released for beta testing, everyone needs to test it. Using S14's example, If A and B get to play with it and have all of the bugs worked out for them. Then C and D go ahead and play with it and it's buggy, they'll throw a fit, talk about quitting and make useless threads.

Yes it has been 3 and a half months, and it would be nice for maybe a status and maybe how long it would take, but the second they give a status report, first persons words "Alright it's almost done yay!", then your average impatient person, one or two weeks later after the status report "Dude that's not much to do, how can it take one or two weeks? Man can't the developers realize it's been so long." Then that first person changes his opinion and says the exact same thing.

We don't know how long it takes, who are we to judge? Be happy that it's even being developed. It's coming and will be here soon. Many other people say it "ruins their game".

But when it comes out and it's not what everyone expected.... All of the complainers will raise hell. Not having the scirocco shouldn't change the game.

I'm sorry but your view and opinion isn't the correct way to look at it, and you're just setting yourself up for misery and others having to listen to it.

You've read my post wrong. In fact you've probably read the first two sentences then assumed my post was the same as the other 90% in this thread.

I never said that anything was owed to us. I was merely making a suggestion that a firm status report from the devs would be a reassuring thing to see, rather than the spooky wall of silence we now have.

Obviously you will get the immature people, however for 80% of the community communication like this is dearly valued. I think my points raised have been much fairer than some of the other replies, and to be honest, communication between developers and the community will enhance the vision that the game is still being worked on. We've already had people quitting LFS because of this - a simple update on the website at least will reassure people that the new update is actually coming soon. How do we know that this isn't all "hot air"?

You've also jumped to conclusions in the fact that you think I'm just another whinging newbie chatting about the new car. I'm not, and not once in my previous post did I mention the Scirocco, I merely mentioned the patch/update. Everybody who has read the original postponement notice would know that the Scirocco isn't the only thing included in the patch. I said that on purpose to see how many people would jump to the conclusion that I desperately wanted the Scirocco, and I'm thankful its only you who hasn't read my post.

A status update would do much more good than harm, and would reassure the community that the devs are actually still working on it. 3 and a half months is a long time with no news

Only if the people who have been selected as the testers boast about it on the forums. Actually, in that respect, how do we know that 100 or so people don't already have a closed beta?
