I get the same result. A double click on lfs.exe and it just arrives on the bottom row and refuses to open. I don't want to delete it and re-install because I've got it so I can race head to head on multiplayer with my brother and its taken two years to find out how to configure it to do that.
I really need help on this without deleting it and re-installing.

I have my LFS icon on my desktop and as per usual it normally comes up when I double click on it. Today it just goes down to the bottom row and refuses to open. I click on that same lowdown icon and another one appears beside it. Can u tell me please how to correct this glitch??

I use TripleHead2Go a unit put out by Matrox and use it happily for flight sim and car racing. I have three 24 inch wide screens and these work well. i have used these for four years. There are cleverer items about these days but there's a price to pay.

Hi loopingz
I had the same problem (if I understand you rightly). I wanted to hold a multiplayer race between myself and One other person. In the early days of LFS this was straightforward, a fancy host name, a password that only you and the other party knew and hey presto, you had your head-to-head race.
Then, mysteriously, some three years or so back, after an upgrade patch the option disappeared and we got "timed out" and on asking for help, were directed to explore the mysteries of "port forwarding". That proved beyond us. So, unfortunately, our head to head battles were ended unless we found a deserted track on Multiplayer which allowed the Fox cars.
At intervals we came back to the LFS forum to seek help but no easy directions to solve port forwarding was to be found.
Recently, two things helped.
One, found a friend who knew about port forwarding.
Unfortunately his explanation was still the kind to induce a glazed look in my eyes!
Secondly, a piece of software called "Teamviewer" became available. With this he could be at his own computer, but get onto my computer (with my password and therefore, permission, and in barely two minutes solve the mysteries of port forwarding for me. I now have head to head racing via multiplayer at my disposal.
On the one hand, I am none the wiser for he was so fast as his mouse whizzed over my screen to sort out "pf" I could never remember all the steps but the problem is solved.
next step. Find someone who knows about port forwarding.
Get the free software of "teamviewer" and see a miracle unfold before your eyes!!

Here's another part-time driver who's very interested in upgrading to S3 when it becomes available. If there's any news on when and what it will add to the already much-loved racing scenario I would much appreciate it.

To Jakg and MadcatX
The longstanding problem - to enable two LFS racers to race head to head purely with a single host name and password - has now been solved.
Many thanks to you both for your attempts to put us on the right course but it was a third computer techhie expert who came onto my machine, (via TeamViewer) and was able to control my PC by remote control, and, with me watching, moved between the various windows and did the enabling magic.
The plus of all this is that the problem is over.
The negative is that it was too complicated to be able to repeat to someone who wanted to perform the same function.
If you haven't heard of Teamviewer it is a useful bit of software to help twits like me enjoy the technical know how of someone who knows the secret...

Hi MadcatX
The only number you have mentioned is 63392 in previous replies.
You referred to more than one.
What, precisely, is the question or request that I should put to the BT Tech Support when I get through to them.
If he asks me to explain what I'm talking about I shall be flummoxed!

The puzzling thing is that I can make a new Host "site" where I can nominate a track, car, race length, etc, etc and stay on it and race away on my own for days if I wish but I cannot invite anyone to join in. Its utterly daft when it was easy/peasy years ago. Perhaps you could, on your own, set up a host and invite someone to join in with you provided that you advise them of its password and, let me know if your set up enables you to host a track for one against one racing.
I would like to know if you are able to carry out this seemingly simple set up.

hi MadcatX
What I really think would be the easy solution to my problem is for someone within LFS or who is really in the know of such things to set out, STEP by STEP how I might configure my LFS to set up the ability to make a track and the option to invite whoever with the help of a password.
The other way might be to download the previous version of S2 which enabled us to do it without a hitch.
There is a download archive which may contain this patch. I'm not sure of what the name and reference number was.

Hi MadcatX
Thanks for your reply. We both have our Firewalls able to allow us to go onto any of the Hosts/servers mentioned in Multiplayer and can join up with the tracks as the list shows. My own router was sent to me by post by BT, the UK main phone/broadband provider so i don't see how contacting them would be an easy path. We normally get shuttled off to India for any help we require.
Have you any idea why they (LFS developers) stopped anyone setting up a Host to create a private track? This was so easy and so convenient.
Now the "timed out" message and port forwarding complicated stuff is proving a real pain in the a***.

You are communicating with the thickest stupidest LFS pilot in captivity. How does one start a server and make a password?
I have started a host and given that a password and also an admin password and for a couple of years this worked perfectly but now we're confronted with "timed out" when we try to meet on a Host.
You seem to imply that it is easy. How is a server easier to create than a Host?
Please continue with your help. I think we're getting warm!!

Thank you Silverracer
But having noted your two boxes of codes in your reply, what exactly do I do to implement them? I've never come across this reference to code before. I'm not, as you may gather, one of the most capable of LFS racers within the community. The changing of skins and fiddling with the fine tuning of the cars is quite beyond me.
A bit more help with what to do with these codes you mention, step by step, would be appreciated.
Regards. Tks.
Is it possible to set up a Host for you and ONE other person?

I would like to know if it is possible to set up a Host and with the use of a password have just one other person taking part. I've understood this was possible some years back but with successive patches this option was removed.

Boothy,
I admire your attention to my cry for help and also that a reply was given but I did actually try to investigate and act on the advice given but didn't work for me.
Have you had success with this port forwarding procedure?
Two Windows 7 LFS fans wanting to go head to head
peejayh
S3 licensed
Two LFS fans, both operating on Windows 7, both fully paid-up card carrying geriatric racers want to set up a two person multiplayer race.
We could do this quite happily a few years back but then progress hit LFS and now we can't.
Try port forwarding we were told.
A clumsy messy complicated procedure which didn't help one scrap.
We used to do it with a simple password but now its not available.
Does anyone know how two remote users can still join together and not have anyone else in the race?
If I can't get a Logitech Momo wheel what is....

With us now into the summer of 2010 and it becoming harder to track down a new Logitech MOMO wheel, may I ask what are the recommendations for a wheel for LFS which ain't gonna cost an arm and a leg. I've seen a number of wheels which are just recommended for PS2 OR PS3 but I'm uncertain how good they'd for PC racing games.
Any hints please?

Thanks Kamrock, I'll certainly enquire of BT whether they have blocked any ports. Much obliged for the suggestion.

I have been able to identify my router as
BT Voyager 220V ADSL Voice Router
(It was manufactured in China for BT).
There is no model number on it but an Item Code is 024888.
I did not know that the router had a password and so wouldn't know how to change it.
What is the Gateway?
How do I access it or know what it looks like?. Does it appear on my computer screen?

Thanks for your advice I will investigate the "Gateway" thingy although I've heard it mentioned but never really understood the ins and outs of it.

I browsed through the piece on "port forwarding" in an attempt to solve the difficulty in getting two drivers on LFS to have access to a track limited only by knowing the right password. The website on port forwarding led me to a group who advertise a program called "pfconfig" and this, they claim, takes away all the responsibilities so that a "join-up" will be happily provided.
Has anyone any knowledge or experience of this program?
It sounds ideal if it does what it claims.

Sorry Pandera, i should have added, that I'm not familiar with home networking basics but my router is purely standard and i have never sought to alter it in any way. (Other than give it well meaning kick if it won't connect me....)

Thanks Bob, you are right - I did try and after trying to get to grips with this port forwarding but after a few months gave up. The collapse of this convenient (for us) arrangement did coincide with a new patch coming into play. I can't remember which one. Now the person joining comes up with a message that the host was not recognized.
Now we have revived our desire to dive into LFS again (after nearly a year out - doesn't time fly) and are set on trying to make sense of port forwarding finally.
We both use routers.
I'm in England, my brother is in France.
Both got Vista.
Two year old machines.
Both got the recent patches OK.
If you could advise me how to "grab" a server for our sole use you could find yourself added to our Christmas card list. There, what could be nicer than that?!!
Racing head to head only

When I say "head to head" I mean just two racers who don't want anyone else on the track. When LFS2 came out it was a simple thing to make a secret host name and also a secret password and then just choose any track and any car. About two years back a patch came out which nullified this set up. Suddenly we lost this ideal arrangement. We were directed to use a facility called "post forwarding" but nobody was able to clearly set out what this was.
We're still in the dark.
Does the function to have a race with a host name nominated still require post forwarding. This mysterious process remains the barrier to enjoying LFS.
Can someone please spell out in simple terms just what is involved?
