Quote from DEVIL 007 :Yeh, but 4 hours maintenance windows is quite big and I just purchased and cant even test it. I seem to loose logic behind it...to be able to practise offline I need to be able to go first online.

I agree, this is total BS. Two huge thumbs down for Iracing over this.

Just like you I want to practice off-line, but can't.

Please send an email to iracing's support to let them know what you think. :thumbsdow

Just finished building this up for sim racing. First new pc in almost a decade, so I was a bit indulgent. It was built with a lot of room for upgrades in mind as I would like to go 3 way SLI with 3 monitors in stereoscopic 3D at some point in the future - or perhaps one huge monitor if they make something bigger than 24" that's 3D capable.

Case: Cool master Haf 932
PSU: Corsair 1200w
CPU: Sandy Bridge i5 2500K with CPU cooler
GPU: 2x Asus GTX 470's in SLI
Mobo: Gigabyte UD7 (supports 3 way sli)
SSD: 60gb (Just for OS - boots nice and fast)
HDD: 1TG WD Caviar Black
Monitor: Acer 24" gd235hz 120hz 3D with nvidia 3D shutter glasses
OS: Win 7 pro
RAM: 8GB G. Skill

Wheel: Fanatec GT3 RS
Shifter: Act Labs GPL
Pedals: DIY

Well I finally made it to iracing. I've been putting it off since I had to buy a new PC and monitor.

Graphics are a disappointment (not much better than LFS), but the physics and force feedback are fantastic.

Gotta love the way these cars turn in.

Jefferson Reverse in the Ford spec racer .

In the end it's way overpriced for what it is. But it really should be something when they finish it - weather, tire wear, graphics etc.

Current PC technology is good enough to make a stunning simulator and I guess the only way it's going to get built is if people are willing to pay $100+ a year to develop it. Patrons of the arts so to speak.

Still, you have to hand it to the LFS devs for delivering so much for so little.

Quote from sysoosi :Actually I'm not a diy guy so my choice would be the clubsport clamp. I guess I could buy one later on if the stock one isn't good enough for me. It's not like they're running out of them.

I'd say it's more "McGyver-like" than DIY, but YMMV.

A hardware store should be able to cut the wood for you. Then all you need to do is buy 2 C clamps and three bolts. Then just drill 3 holes.

Total cost should be about $10-20 (assuming you have access to a drill) and it'll be uber sturdy.

On the other hand it's not the prettiest looking arrangement, but it sure beats having the wheel move around.

I didn't like the stock clamp at all so I cut up a bit of ply wood and then mounted the wheel to the ply. Now I just use some C clamps to clamp the ply to a desktop. That would work for a 5" thick desk with the right c clamps.

DFP to GT3 RS is a huge step up. I stopped lusting after a Frex ff wheel after I got mine. Near enough is good enough, or so they say, but then again I've never used a Frex FF wheel.

Quote from molocco :what i still don´t understand is why scaven alowed the people at the game convention drive the vw with the old physics and the rest of the community had to stand and watch. he has every right to decide the way he did, but this situation is giving bad feelings to most of us.

Hindsight is 20-20 as they say. I'm sure if he realized that the physics update would take so long, he would have done things differently.

BTW Happy new year to the devs. Fingers crossed this year brings good things to LFS.

This 'poor mans' VR setup looks pretty cool, but it'd be tiresome after a while though.

Sorry I can't get the imbeding to work, so here is a link.

So Jason, does your 40" monitor work in 3D with LFS? I read somewhere that the 120hz HD TV's didn't work with PC's in 3D. Hope I'm wrong about that, I'd love to have a 32-40" 3D screen on the PC.

I'll concede your point that you need a bigger screen for full immersion. But to do something like that, in 3D, correctly is a huge expense, even without the motion simulator, and I'd say you'd get 90% of that with a single screen with smaller FOV and one of those IR head tracking devices. We're talking about < $1K USD for something like that and less than $600 if you're willing to use a smaller screen (24").

As for the wheel getting in the way... well you just put the screen in front of the wheel and turn of the virtual wheel & driver animations. Of course you'd need a really hi-res screen (which does not exist) to pull off sitting so close.

Anyway this was about a single PJ vs a single monitor and I still don't see any advantage for the PJ (when using 3D) at current HD resolutions.

When I get the new home theater up and running, I'll try it out with LFS. Should be something to experience even in 2d.

BTW thanks for the red bull link, that was cool to watch

Quote from JasonJ :You would think so.... but actually it doesn't. Only about 60 degrees. IMHO full imersive racing can only be achieved with something at least 145 degrees, which doesn't work on even a large single monitor. You need the peripheral field of view filled up so you have to turn your head if you really want the perfect solution. Like the Red Bull simulator

Sorry for a slight off topic, but someone? said the perfect 3D screen would be 40" and I beg to differ, that's all I wanted to say. I have 40" set to about 85 degrees FOV and still I always feel it is never enough (width) even in anaglyph 3D, I still don't feel immersed. Also you cannot get it (LCD) as close as 1.5 ft because the wheel is sitting there -and your arms I might add, to mount it there you would have to look upwards all the time. (Mines about 60cm away) A projector doesn't have this problem.
3x 3D 40" screens would be close to perfect 'cept for bloomin' bezels, gah!

Good luck BBT with the new projector, even with only one you should be able to get some serious FOV and a large enough screen to feel motion sick.

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :Don't need the TH2G or anything like that now; nVidia's drivers support 3 3D monitors innately using SLi. It's called 3D Surround and was enabled in the drivers recently. From what I understand the multi-monitor implementation is much better than EyeFinity.

That sounds expensive, but it's nice to know one could do it.

Quote from JasonJ :And for what it's worth, one 40" screen does not provide large enough scale/size for the large FOV (>140) required for true immersive racing. Just saying.
<< 40" at 145 FOV... crap

It all comes down to how close you sit to the monitor. 40" would take up almost your entire field of view at a 1-2 ft viewing distance

But I think a curved screen would help with perspective distortion etc.

Anyway the point is that what is needed is super high resolution in a mid sized screen. When correctly set up, 3D allows you to sit as close as you like to the screen. Kind of like a VR headset.

Have any of you guys compared 3D on a 120hz CRT vs LCD?

The acer here looks pretty sweet - it's got a 2ms response time so the ghosting shots look acceptable, about what my CRT does.

http://3dvision-blog.com/acer- ... ion-ready-monitor-review/

As for projectors, well I've had one in a dedicated light controlled room with truly capable sound and I *loved* it for movies. Never bothered with it for games though. Hell I've since moved house and can now build my all out dream theater. Something along the lines of a 16x8ft scope screen and approx sixteen 15" drivers in an infinite baffle sub . I couldn't afford a 3D PJ to light up that sized screen though. Don't even know if I can afford a 2D PJ to light up that sized screen.

Anyway 2d or 3d I still won't use it for race simming, because, when set up right, a 22" screen can appear to be huge when used with 3D glasses - and if you want bigger, just sit closer. Sitting too close will compromise the resolution though, so IMHO, the perfect 3D monitor would be a 40" scope screen with 4-16 times the current HD resolution. I'd sit with it about 1-1.5 ft from my eyes.

I'd also imagine that a 3D PJ would still have those scanning issues, at least with an LCD PJ. Or is there something special about a PJ where it avoids the scanning issue?

BTW BBT were you planning on a dedicated gaming PJ or something for both movies and games? Were you going for 3D PJ?

Quote from Shotglass :nah just the fact that adding flicker and losing about 90% of you monitors brightness mixed with the simple fact that its impossible for lcds to do 3d in tdm without ghosting isnt a particularly bright idea

Are you speaking from experience with the new 120hz 3D LCD's (like the one I linked in my first post)?

The glasses cause my CRT to loose about 30-40% brightness. So I just turn up the brightness. Picture quality might suffer a tad, but it's no biggie and an extremely small price to pay for close to virtual reality levels of immersion.

BTW I don't notice any flicker with a 120hz refresh rate, YMMV.

Quote from GFresh :Well, i for one know nothing about it, perhaps if i saw it, then i would consider it... I'm all for the immersion factor

Look at your avatar, you're 1/2 way there lol.

But seriously just Google 3D LCD shutter glasses.

This is what I have, but I'm sure you could do better now-a-days. The biggest hitch for 3D is that you have to have a 120hz monitor.

Sounds like you had a bad experience, what happened?

3D PJ would be nice, but unnecessary in my experience. Basically the 3D glasses turn the 22" monitor into a virtual window which is percived to be much larger, but further away. Through that window everything appears life sized. There's nothing infront of the monitor coming out out you when properly adjusted, at least in race sims.

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :I don't imagine it'll be any different... I didn't check yet, but I assume it still scans top -> bottom and thus will still be subjected to some ghosting here and there. What pisses me off is that the glasses only go totally opaque right in the centre - are yours like that too?

I thought that ghosting was related to response time in LCD's and phosphorous decay time in CRT's. That's why white would ghost the most (hahaha) on my monitor, because white has the longest PDT. At least that's what I always reasoned...

My glasses work as good as they did on day one, ie they go evenly opaque.

Why racers aren't clamoring over themselves to get these things is a total mystery to me.

I miss the old forums (back when they were on RSC and when there was even a RSC!) and the old community spirit.

I also miss the early days circa 2004. Racing the MRT around south city, heck racing anything around south city back then was fun.

Kind of miss my old red momo from back then too. But it's replacement is much better, still, it was my first wheel.

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo : I actually posted a thread wondering why I found my eyes LESS tired than after sessions of non-stereo gaming, I can still only assume it's because my eyes are at least adjusting "one parameter more" constantly so the muscles don't stay locked quite the same way as with 2D.

This ^

BTW has anyone tired the 'new' 3D LCD screens? How is the ghosting?

Did I miss something in the link? I didn't see anything about a two hour max.

In the first few years I had the shutter glasses, I used them for 4-6 hours a day for days on end... maybe even a few months straight.

My eye sight is pretty good - I don't, nor never have worn glasses and I'm closing in on 40.

I've been using 3D glasses with a 21" CRT since about 2003.

I want to upgrade to a LCD, but I also need a new PC, since mine is also circa 2003.

I don't play LFS (or any other racing sim) without the glasses. When properly adjusted, the effect is sublime and I'd take a 22" LCD 3D monitor over a huge 2D HD projector screen, every time.

I had a very similar thing happen to me about 3 months back and I started a thread just like this. I'm also Australian, so that's weird

Anyway it turns out the guy who banned me thought I was someone else. My name, "Zapz" was too similar to someone called "Spaz" who was wrecking and subsequently banned. Kinda trigger happy if you ask me.

Good luck with your quest...
