We will just agree to disagree Dustin. I never said it was viable, because I don't know that, and either do you. But if it was, it would bring in a whole lot more than '5' paying customers. Wine is ok but it is a last resort because it is a bit troublesum, lacks performance, and doesn't make the game particularly accessible to new players. Being able to put the game in an an app store on the other hand would make it very visable to a lot of new people.

Bunder, corporations pay for support because they don't have people with the necessary skills in their company to do what they want to do.

Back on topic... MAGGOT, yea, I do understand Dustins point. How much work needs to be done depends on how LFS was designed. If it was viable to port it(I realise there are many variables here....), then making it available in places like the new OS X app store and the Ubuntu software centre would bring in a lot of new people.

Vendetta Online recently got added to the Ubuntu Software Centre. They also just finished porting to Tigra powered Android tablets (ie the Xoom) which has brought in a welcome influx of new people.

Most cross platform games are niche. This is a niche title that would fit well in Linux.

Driver/software support is a bit of a chicken and egg situation. If you buy a Mac or use Linux, use supported hardware. I've heard all you have said before but my suggestion still stands of course Others do it so cross platform game development is possible.
I understand your point of view though...

Except this:
"Adding support for things that won't really benefit him or the community is a wasted effort."

Supporting additional platforms will expand the community and the number of paying customers.

Yes, the fact that LFS wasn't designed to be cross platform from the beginning is a big block. However there are plenty of other developers that successfully make cross platform games. I think all the games in the Humble Indie Bundle I posted above are cross platform. Vendetta Online, with a dev team of 4 successfully maintain their game for 4 different platforms. Also, OS X and Linux are on the rise.

I know, I know. Probably been suggested many times before. I searched but only found threads about running on Wine.

I think the direction this game takes would really appeal to a lot of Linux gamers and probably sell very well in something like the Ubuntu software centre.

Most Linux users at present are technical types who would really appreciate the amount of work put into the physics simulation and generated sounds.

Linux users are also very generous. Check out the payment stats on http://www.humblebundle.com/
Average 'pay what you want' for the Humble Indie Bundle games:
Average Windows:$7.84
Average Mac:$9.27
Average Linux:$13.78

I'm not sure about aditional colour coding and numbering. If you add too much variation it will look very busy and confusing on the map.

Just my thoughts. It would be nice to have a more consistant way of showing other drivers, their positions and who you are viewing, instead of the currently seperate connection table, results table and whatever else there is

It is difficult to tell who's car you are spectating when the race is over. Sometimes the name would turn yellow in the results list, and sometimes it doesn't. It would be nice to add the drivers name somewhere so it's a bit more consistant, don't know where though

I am going to dig up this thread... What I hate in programming is other programmers. They are all younger and more capable than me. I really love technical things and wish I had enough knowledge in programming to make something usefull, but I must be a really slow learner, and I am not academic. I barely finished my college course, and I didn't finish the last one. I envy you all!

At the moment I am trying to dig in to programming theory with Ruby. I find it[Ruby] very easy to remember. I looked at my old GCSE maths revision books yesterday and boy am I clueless, I gotta try and refresh my memory.

As for indentation, I've settled on tabs so anybody can set their editor to space them as they like. I set mine up for 2 spaces

Quote from ajp71 :Agreed first thing is to get to a stage where you can lap a combo at consistantley without having to think about it, that doesn't mean thousands of laps just enough to know what you're doing and not get caught out. Then once you've got the hang of this you need to be looking in your mirrors as much as you look at the cars ahead, if you had a guy behind you who disappears from view that's when you need to start thinking about where he is.

I can understand this, and i am always aware when someone is beside me, but it is still very hard to negoatiate corners without droping back out of fear of spinning someone else off the track or them doing the same to you becuase you cant tell how far ahead or behind you they are, especially on the first lap when there are so many cars. It would make the first corner alot more fun I think.

Yea, I considered that. Perhaps my example was bad. What I am thinking of is some kind of visual cue to help with orientation between you and cars that are right beside you.

neighbouring car overlay

I find it's very easy to loose your orientation while looking left and right with the view controls and you can't get a feel for what is around you.

I know there is the pitspotter program which announces when someone is beside you, but it isn't that affective when things are going a bit fast.

What about an option for a simple overlay with a rectangle that represents you car and one for each neighbouring car?

A crude example in the attachment. I know it would certainly help with orientation and stop me knocking people at corners in close races. Good or just rubbish? Maybe it would be better just under the circuit map or some other type of overlay.

Sorry I am not sure if this is the correct place to report bugs for test patches. I have a Sidewinder FF2 joystick, but LFS calls it a wheel. Not a show stopper, but had me a little confused at the start while I tried to find the option to combine throttle and break.

Or more importantly, arn't stuck with NAT, developed as a work around for the lack of addresses. Which in turn makes obtaining direct network connections more complicated, usually having to rely on a third party. Think of skype. All programs sould connect that easy, except be more reliable and less complicated underneath. I don't know about the other features, but that is the one I'm most interested in(and quality of service, whatever the differences are to IPv4). There are a few transition mechanisms developed to allow people on IPv4 networks to get an IPv6 address and connect to other IPv6 hosts. The software must still support IPv6 to take advantage of it. Besides, we don't want IPv4 servers, we want IPv6 ones

Im sure something like banning demo racers using a hardware based key would be workable. Of course someone is always going to find a way around it no matter how hard you try, but it will take more effort and cut down on the number of wreckers

Quote from wheel4hummer :IPv6 is backward compatible with IPv4.

What do you mean by backward compatable?
Support for IPv6 still needs to be developed though?

I don't know a lot about IPv6, I am just curious. It then shoud be easy enough to support ipv4 and ipv6 clients on the same server and the master server could report both IP addresses for dual stack servers? IPv6 would take the hassel out of NAT configuration for hosting a game, espically for those that don't know anything about ports or how to configure their broadband router to forward them.

Are their any plans for IPv6 support?

Hi,
I'm just wondering what LFS's take on IPv6 is, since it seams to be gaining momentum and there is a lot of application support for it now.

I find I can leave a firefox window or 2 and maybe iTunes or something open whileplaying other games without any problems. I have 2GB of ram so swapping shouldn't be an issue, unless playing Battlefield2 <_< . But LFS seams to be more prone to stuttering than other games when something small happens in the background, particularly the sound, which is maybe why I notice it more.

My LFS is stuttery when other things happen such as changing pages in firefox or 'download complete' pops up, does anybody else have this problem?

I like traction control. I find it far to hard to race even the V08 without it to be any fun. I wouldn't like to emagine the number of car pile ups at the start of each race if TC were banned The challange is to get around the track as fast as possible, not keep the car in a streight line (without TC, the challange for me would be the latter )

Isn't the F1 traction control delibertly simple? Does it just reduce the power when things start to get wobbly?

I like this idea, make hotlap uploading a little more streamline.

Even if it was very simple, an upload button in the esc menu when viewing a replay or while hotlaping. But then a fastest time notifier would also be handy too, so you don't have to check your replays.
