Quote from kaynd :Rules and limitations are chosen by the organizers of each real life league or event... not by “God” who made physics or the entire “word” in where we live and some of us race.

LFS is that visual environment where we all race. There is no need to restrict the entire world in order to make standard classes limiting the existing setup freedom.
This should be a tool for LFS Hosts – the equivalent of league or event organizers IRL.

Well then we definitely disagree. If they added a Renault Clio Cup car you'd expect everything down to the tyres to be exactly the same wouldn't you, even if it exists in the LFS realm. It would be seriously wrong if such a car was massively more adjustable in the game than it is in real life.
I believe that all the cars in LFS should be treated in the same way (as if they've been taken straight from real motorsport), the only difference being that you have to find similar car series' on which to base your specifications/regulations, because obviously the cars are fictitious.
To me it seems both kaynd and sinbad ideas will result in the same thing (i.e. spec racing) but with kaynd's version you could see more variations were with sinbad's version we will be lumped with the developers interpretation.

I personally think it is better to leave it to the community to design and implement spec serries - although that doesn't guarantee good results as you can't predict which serries will become popular and just because it's popular doesn't mean its good . Where with fixed spec serries by the developers there is also no guarantee that it will be good but as with most things implemented it's likely to be ironed out in test patches - a good point is that the spec serries will be forced so the takeup of the serries is assured - the bad is that there is less opportunity for variaty and also it will require time and effort on the developers behalf to maintain the spec serries (as with any physics change they will need refreshing, etc)

So all in all I still think that the best solution is to have full adjustability but allow servers to set setup restrictions and a default setup. (i.e. let the community design, implement and maintain spec serries racing)
Quote from Takumi_lfs :I would like to see the camber being locked.

Same goes for gearbox and other parts.

gear box yes camber NO

you know how easy it is to change the camber in a car??? all it takes is a shifter a jack and about 30mins

server side options to limit setups is the ONLY way till will work
1) Servers should be able to enforce a "server-setup"
2) Maybe a new car which is fixed formula, nothing can be set.

That way, everyone is happy.

I'd be happy with that. I'd like a more race-car looking GTi-cup car or something (with roll cage) and realistic restrictions/specification based on a real-world equivalent. No need for more power or better tyres, except that would simply render it slower than its "road-car" sibling, so maybe a touch more power and less weight. XRGT could be done in the same way.

Unfortunately that's never going to happen. So server options which probably nobody will ever use are the closest we'll get, which means there are no standard road cars in LFS except for the new Scirocco, and not even anything which comes close to a grass-roots or spec-cup series car, which is a shame.
no no no

We have a garage..
I duno, but maybe a solution would be something in the following fashion,

--There is a server that sets up a special racing category, and posts it's "setup rules" then before entering the race setup is sent to the server. You could also have the server check that sent setup coincides with setup being used at random. And at the end of the race, at least the podium and some at random will have their setup checked. If the setup used differs from the setup sent or in some way doesn't comply with the rules then the offender is penalized accordingly.

Seems to me easy enough to implement (hopefully only minor change in LFS code). Seems to me that this could make boths sides happy. Those that want it non-limited can still use it, and those that want a limited category can implement it too. Also it will be more like "real life". You could also have it that FERRARI get away with any setup
Good idea, unfortunately completely worthless... Server admins will not bother setting rules, just take a look at all the unused weather options - it's not convenient...

This issue can be sidestepped altogether with a clever default configuration for the server. E.g. random weather upon every start/restart/track change, which is what CTRA already does IIRC but using InSim instead. Shouldn't be too hard to have it done natively, though. Of course then a new option would be needed, to enforce a specific weather.

The same could apply to spec racing. E.g. add set support to LFSworld, so the spec classes can be centrally managed. Upload some sensible defaults to it, and have the server default to the preloaded spec class.
