Quote from Intrepid :Also keep an eye out on where your parts come from. I would reccomend doing some karting but if the dollar does what it is expected to do (crash) then importing Italian (where most karts stuff comes from) goods could become difficult. People are trying to create some firm of ultra cheap karting to bring people i however.

It's still worth looking at karting though because it is by far the best bang for buck in motorsport today, and you get the chance to race some of the best drivers on the planet. Dan Wheldon and co were racing at the SuperNats just last weekend up against average Joes like you and me (and NO they didn't win)

Ignore karting if you can't afford other forms of wheel to wheel racing. The only way go karts can compete at £20 + petrol level is 30 minutes in a rental kart, not exactly the same thing. The same money will buy you a day of competitive motorsport in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in a car rather than a souped up lawnmower.

Skip Barber is only good value compared to other forms of racing, still looking at thousands an event.

If you can't afford racing and want something with a competitive element then look at sprints, road rallies and auto solos. All of which you can do in a standard road car with nothing else for a pretty nominal club sub and entry fee. Alternatively there is some quite good non-contact short oval circuit racing in the UK, I'm sure there will be plenty of production classes in the US at low cost.

Quote from Dajmin :and the brief use of mag wheels in motorsports

Magnesium wheels are still the best available and used in F1 and almost all serious competition, but are far too expensive to filter into road cars.

Quote from duke_toaster :Turbochargers were popularized due to the turbo era of F1? BMW 2002 turbo was the first turbo road car I can think of, it was Early 70s. Later that decade Renault thought it was a nice idea and took it up for F1, soon everyone used it for motorsport. Around the same time the technologies got picked up for road cars.

Turbos were used in road cars long before they ever became successful in racing. You might find that some of the rally anti-lag systems have been put into road cars and of course rallying gave us the Gatso.

Other than that there could be a (very) tentative argument that Mercedes Grand Prix cars of the 1950s pioneered fuel (diesel derived and I think direct) injection in petrol engined road cars, with the 300SL. Other than that you could argue that the Miller racing cars of the 1920s developed front wheel drive.

Done street luge, we don't really have the climate for ice sports in the UK (though it sure feels like we do this morning!). Fantastic fun, definitely grab any opportunity to do such activities when you can

I think disc brakes were widely used on aircraft before racing cars. Possibly the concept of monocoque construction (by a 1920s French racing car which someone else may be able to help you with). Various aerodynamic and engine developments. Some safety improvements (seatbelts?). Not to mention no shortage of new materials and (largely historical) advancement in testing rigs/wind tunnels/car setup/simulation etc.

The new version is getting really useful. I think there is little (if anything) that a full 3D package can now add for the average track over BTB, especially since we know laserscanning input is in development for it.

One thing I'm not too sure about though, is it best to create terrain (and get the infield points connected) before applying elevation to the track?

Quote from Intrepid :Drivers, and parents will spend millions in karting so spending a few more in F2 is hardly a stretch! Considering F2s exposure, and prize no doubt it will be on the list of many drivers ambitions

Millions in karting? You've got to be having a laugh. There's no doubt it is possible to buy a seat in F1, anybody will take you if you put enough cash upfront, especially in an economic down turn. It simply doesn't make sense putting silly amounts to win one particular formula.

Quote from mookie427 :you seem to be unable to think that muslims can be racially motivated? What if poor old abused Habib was racially motivated? That sort of comment epitomises this country, in that only white people can be classed as racist.

Of course racism can go both ways. In this case however it was a clear cut case of a white British family of idiots giving prolonged racial abuse to their perfectly legitimate muslim neighbours, that was established in court. Obviously anybody in such a position is going to have anger, which may or may not be racially motivated, and unfortunately the scum got what was coming to them.

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :But murder is still murder, calling someone names is not reason enough to kill them and in this case the person who's car was attacked wasn't even a member of the BNP and more to the point the list released is supposedly just a list of people who contacted BNP HQ but doesn't mean they support the party.

It is still a crime that can never be justified, but by giving such provocation they only bring it upon themselves.

The car that attacked was not owned by someone on the BNP list, they simply lived in the same street.

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :There is a very obvious reason why this leak was a bad thing, regardless how you feel about the BNP it leads to violence towards innocent people. Linky. Which if it was the other way round would be classed as a racist attack.

Now lucky this time it was only a car, but how long until this starts turning to personal attacks and someone ends up dead?

Unfortunately inciting racial and religious hatred is going to upset people and some will turn violent, there has already been a case of one of these racist bigots getting murdered by a neighbour who couldn't stand his abuse.

Quote from andybarsblade :Here we go again, Its like you have something personal against them

Do you deny that the BNP wish to abolish the human rights act? Read their own literature for once.

Can you not comprehend that the full Sharia criminal justice system is blocked by the human rights act?

Therefore the BNP is the only major political party that has policies which could allow for Sharia law? The reasons they want to abolish the human rights act is to allow corporal punishment so whilst a party that dishes out religious hatred to muslims like there's no tomorrow is unlikely to impliment Sharia law they are effectively wanting the controsversial bits that offend people anyway.

Of course one can drive a similar car on a completely different track (most likely an airfield seeing as there are very few totally independent circuits). The cost of doing so would be huge and there would probably be about as much benefit as doing a track day in a road car or playing with one of your pedal karts. This is not going to be the only route into F1 and those with large wallets will still be able to buy a drive in the best car in conventional formulae and then put enough up front to get themselves into an F1 drive, like countless others have done before them.

Quote from lil chris :Im quite gobsmacked at some of the intial posts to this , you can support a political party and only support a few of their idea's (even if some are quite radical). Example would be voting Labour and NOT supporting the troops moving in on Iraq.. Im no BNP supporter but saying "they get what they deserve" is just bigotry. There prolly many doctors and civil workers who have done alot of help.

Invading random countries was not a published Labour policy.

Quote from Intrepid :That isn't what I was looking for. WHat's stopping a more wealthy driver buying their own similar F2 car, and same data system and going testing?

I know certain 'well-known' drivers already do this and the results speak for themselves.

It is pretty easy for the FIA to ban people from testing at FIA certified venues. I know of a pair of Formula BMW drivers being banned from taking part in an endurance event in a GT car on a different layout of a track which Formula BMW had a round at.

If you start getting silly with building carbon copies of cars (because Williams sure as hell are not going to sell you one) and using private test tracks it would be far easier to just buy a drive in F1.

Quote from andybarsblade :So your saying if i vote BNP i instanly turn into a racist thug who wants all the "darkys" sent back where they came from no questions ask. Im glad some of you arent just mindless biggots..............

If you vote for a party you're voting for whatever is most significant to you about that party, if unsubstantial promises of change out weighs blatant racial hatred and an inconvenient history, then yes you are a mindless bigot.

Quote from flymike91 :This just in, every Swiss person is a slave of the government. You and the rest of Britain should definitely go to war with them and free those poor enslaved people.

In general I agree with the sentiment that academic higher education is not for everyone. However, I don't agree with the concept of national service, in the UK there's plenty of opportunity to sample the armed forces through cadets and various liaison opportunities (all free and all voluntary). Joining up is also no bar to going to university, quite the opposite really there's plenty of financial support for those wishing to do so.

Quote from ultrataco :American points? I don't get it. Video game points, maybe.

This year the F1 drivers championship was won with 98 points, Nascar with 6684. Notice how one system favours simplicity whilst the other just produces big numbers because they impress people who can't count?

It really shouldn't be funny but can't he do better than arguments such as crime committed by white people is actually committed entirely by Turks and Albanians, who are not white in his eyes, therefore they are obviously automatically practicing muslims...

No one is going to want to buy those photos, few people would be interested if you gave them away for free. Photographing major events is a bad idea if you intend to sell your pictures because, apart from the issue of permissions, lots of other photographers will have taken far better pictures, some of which will usually be available for free. If you want to make money from racing photos then take photos at local events and sell them directly to drivers at the next meeting. They will need to be of a high quality, nothing like the ones you've posted, and nicely printed if you expect to sell any. If you want to save some money up get a paper round.

In exactly the same way some stupid Americans complain about Mexicans being prepared to work harder for less than them we get the same idiots complaining about the Poles...

Quote from S14 DRIFT :
Qualifying trim means that, presumably, it could only be ran at full power for short periods of time before exploding(?), or failing in a very large fireball

In qualifying trim it will last several laps, so a lot longer sustained heat and stress than a drag racing engine. Producing huge outputs from engines for relatively short periods of time is possible but not terribly desirable due to the enormous costs associated with it and relatively small list of applications for such engines. Turbo and supercharging are inefficient methods of forced induction, if you want maximum output and no lag at all then using constant pressure forced induction is the way to go. There have been very few serious attempts at this, Nick Mann has a hillclimb special powered by a 1700 BDA with a Wessex (helicopter) providing forced induction, the power output is somewhere over 400bhp and with no lag and four wheel drive this car is incredible to watch off the line, I've never seen (or heard) anything like it. Now in the nicest possible way this engine was designed on a beer mat and built in a shed, probably without any real science being applied at any point with a very good, but old engine that wasn't intended for constant pressure forced induction and a 'turbo' which wasn't intended for this purpose. With proper investment and ground up design there must be huge potential in a system like this.
