Quote from Jakg :In the Mac ads they say a "Mac is for fun stuff", yet Diablo 2 is STILL in the list of 20 top selling Mac games.

Their certainties, our fun.

Expect someone to realise a format for a reality show in that suite soon, with the most exciting moments being spent in the WC.
And all those contestants from all over the world for six accommodations in space, each one willing to kill their brothers and sell their mothers... priceless.

When I come across posts like this I check the age of the OP in his profile to see if my guess is right.

That means: I'm too old to have fun with such things, I've seen them a million times.

Generally such problems are related to open handles or to wrong file attributes. I use The Avenger by Swandog to delete these files.

Anyway since this case isn't related to purposefully wrong attributes used by malware files I'd perform a chkdsk before using The Avenger, and see if the problem goes away.

Edit: check NTFS permissions too (if you use XP Pro, if you use Home the only way to do it is from safe mode) and make sure you have administration rights.

Shaun, the solution to your problem should probably be in the link I posted in the first post of mine. Since your trouble follows a double Windows XP install probably you can sort it out correcting the boot.ini to sort out the boot options.

Nice to see you're a thankful person, hackerx. However if you go back to the first page you'll realise you forgot to thank someone (second and third post if I remember well).

Edit: and fourth.

Quote from ATC Quicksilver :It was a little more complicated than that but yes he pretty much said 'Mclaren have always been like this and will always be like this, if people don't like it they don't have to stay'

That's something I always liked in McLaren. For me it doesn't matter if they screw up a championship or a race because they don't want to have a first and a second guide, just equal opportunities.

I wish more teams could adopt such lack of strategy. I remember that that Barrichello had once to concede a victory to Schumacher in a blatant way, I was with a friend at home. We were extremely angered and we sent an e-mail to the national TV immediately to protest what happened. For sure we were not the only ones, soon after the two TV presenters - with an extremely worried face - were talking about a huge quantity of protest e-mails...

It was funny, somehow. It was the correct strategy for winning the championship, but it was felt as an ugly thing by the majority of race fans.

Quote from thisnameistaken :While we're on the subject, is there a safe (non-destructive) way of repartitioning a volume that already has data on it?

I'm thinking about setting up a Linux partition but I'd rather not have to move too much stuff around to do it.

There's also a free alternative, QTParted for Linux. The Ubuntu CD offers that resize and partition management tool during installs. Some boot cds offer QTParted too.

Quote from dawesdust_12 :The hal.dll is awkward though, in the way that it is custom generated on installation of your computer based on hardware, so simply copying it from elsewhere won't work. In most cases when my computer has rendered me a hal.dll error, I've simply done a repair installation on XP, because theres not much else that you can do.

It is not custom generated, it's chosen during the installation between a few different ones (which have different names before the install). There can also be hal.dlls installed as custom drivers during install boot time, but that's kinda rare in normal situations.

And if you cared to read my post I referred to MS Knowledge base for more info. The relevant discussion for Windows 2000 is here, but the model for Windows XP changed slightly, so the information in that article applies only partially for Windows XP. This one is for Windows XP.

Do a checkdisk from recovery console and see if it helps, it may repair the logical structure of the system partition. Otherwise you'll have to reinstall the hal.dll from recovery console (possibly from dllcache) after you rename the original one if still present. Mind you, there are multiple versions of hal.dll, you have to choose the right one otherwise you may end up with your pc asking for the drivers of all peripherals, and some other less than funny side effects that may render your computer useless or almost useless until you choose the correct driver for your computer (mine is - for instance - Uniprocessor ACPI PC, or something like that, I translated from Italian). Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base for more information on Hardware Abstraction Layer and relative drivers to make sure you understand the differences, so you know why you have to be careful.
Keep in mind there may be some other file missing or damaged. Read also this and check if it applies (maybe, maybe not).

My license, bought with a chipmunk, came almost instantly, I think. It was so fast I can't even remember having waited, at the time. The e-mail asking to confirm my registration at Live for Speed site was received at 12.43, then I logged in and went through the payment process. The processed order mail arrived at 14.10 stating my demo license was upgraded to S2.

My voice sounds like shit, or at least that's my opinion. Too nasal and with too much emphasis on some particular phonemes, with a lot of cadence. This is what I think at the moment. That's quite a common opinion when you listen to your recorded voice and you recognise it's totally different from what you know, yet you're able to say that the voice you hear is yours, and you hate it, while all the other voices seem quite normal.

We're used to listen to our voice from within ourselves, so some components of our voice vibrate through various tissues and bones resulting in a sound that's somewhat different from what we think we know perfectly well.

Even knowing this the opinion I have on my voice hasn't changed. My girlfriend likes it, but I don't. Luckily I can live with that easily, unless I see me taped or videotaped.

What kind of style? Detroit techno? Techno ambient? Experimental techno? Minimal techno? Glitch? Electro? Goa? Hardcore? Techno Dub? There are so many possibilities in techno music that you should first consider your aim. If it's the dancefloor, arm yourself with excellent 909 and 808 sets for a start. Grab a copy of Rebirth at rebirthmuseum.com to have some grips on the basic sounds of the machines that initially shaped techno and house.

To have a harder/punchier sound try using heavy compression on kick and snares, the beats have to be hard as nails. Techno is sometimes quite different from house, it has wider tempo ranges, wider sonic palettes, more freedom in the development of rythmic patterns. Try some good synths and effects from kvraudio.com, there are tons of them. Don't overcrowd the composition adding too much stuff, and keep dynamics at an overall acceptable level: don't go too much over the classical -12 Db RMS mastering limit, dynamics are extremely important in techno, it's not death metal.

Don't overcrowd the sonic spectrum in the mid-high frequencies, use high frequencies well to add clarity, make full use of extremely low frequencies but never overdo it, popping the subwoofers of a club is a bad thing to do. Always listen to your composition at different volumes on different systems before going public, it has to be acceptable (and safe) wherever you play it, unless it's aimed exclusively to good systems (most part of experimental techno privileges good hi-fis).

But in reality, the thing you learn listening to some of the enormous techno production is that you have an extreme degree of freedom, but most of the people are so ignorant about techno that the term is usually mentally associated with dull, unchanging music. Techno music is exactly the opposite, if you want. Listening to Pan Sonic, Villalobos, Autechre, Alva Noto, Drexcya, Snd, Oval, Plastikman, Brinkmann, Jeff Mills (to name a few) can give a hint of the enormous sonic and stylistic diversity of the stuff that goes under the generic name of techno.

So there are no general rules, it doesn't even have to sound good in classical terms if it sounds interesting, but if you're going to do techno because you think it's easier than different genres forget about it, or think about it again.

Edit - I forgot the most important rule, take care of switching off the monitor from time to time. There are moments in which you'd better use only the ears. The visual perspective is fine for development, it helps a lot but you also have to detach yourself from that point of view to be objective. After all people generally listen to music, they don't see it.

I'm extremely confused, yet I see a possible reason through the fog. Is this a modem (not a router) assigning a single IP address? If so, you have your answer.
Albieg
S2 licensed
That won't work. The router has an internal ip address (as said by CSU1) of 10.0.0.8, with a subnet of 255.0.0.0 (but it could be also 255.255.255.0), so assigning internal addresses in a completely different subnet would completely screw connectivity until the original settings are restored. Ip addresses have to be in the same 10.0.0.x range with 10.0.0.8 as gateway and the same subnet mask of the router, but then again you have to check if the chosen addresses are served by NAT correctly. And not only that.

Edit: unless he's in a subnet and the reported IP address is the external one, of course. Fastweb works this way in Italy.

No problem with giving people loads of stuff to do

Easy jokes aside, all of the questions I asked are generated by some possible culprits, precisely:

- Network Interface Card stopping to work (improbable since you reboot your router and you're okay)
- Router crash or router port not responding (this happens to me once in three days on average)
- various DHCP problems (I've seen truckloads of different ones)
- DNS problems (happens quite often with my faulty Netgear, so I assign external ones)
- PPP connection going down or stuck with no packet transit)
- ADSL carrier going down

So please consider those questions just a way to restrict the problem to have an easier diagnosis

After all the effort you put into identifying the problem with your PC, this one should be interesting too, at least that's what I think about troubleshooting. It makes my brain work, so I like having a lot of troubles in my job . Who knows, maybe in the future you'll be able to use these experiences at your own advantage and reward.

First, you don't know if he already has assigned fixed ip addresses (although improbable), and second, you cannot assign 10.0.0.8 to a machine because that's the address he declared as being used by the router. More information are badly needed in this case.

Quote from Nick A :

PS: I now have a new problem though: my internet connection drops once or twice a day and the only way to get it back up is to reboot the router. Oh well, something else to fix...

Same problem with my Netgear router
In my case I'll replace the router since it refuses to answer to ping after the issue. Only way to go on is to put the ethernet plug into another port, and it goes away, at least for some time. I tried it with more computers and I've come to the conclusion I have a faulty router.
Anyway, things to check are:
1) When it happens, are you able to ping the router? Are you able to ping an external host (try to resolve a host that answer to ping like www.google.com with nslookup before the problem to see if you have DNS problems too: if you ping the numeric address after the problem has occurred but you don't ping the alphabetic address, it's a DNS problem).
2) Switching to an unused port - if available - helps?
3) Are you using DHCP or not? If yes, using a fixed IP address helps? Does an ipconfig /all show a disconnected cable or the lack of an IP address assigned to the computer?
4) Are you able to log in into the router and check if the PPP connection (assuming you use this protocol) is up or down?
5) Does the carrier (for ADSL) go down when you can't connect to the internet?

These are just a few hints.

Quote from CSU1 :
Albeig, all standard windows settings apart from tcp over net bios is disabled and the network is encrypted and uses wep security..also the machines have no need to ping one and other directley...just standrd connections.

I just made a few standard questions that are part of a standard troubleshooting procedure. Without some of that info I can't go on because the information given is way too generic. But I bet it would have been easy to do an ipconfig /all on each machine and try using ping with firewalls disabled just to see if there are errors in address attribution (which may be the case) and if you're able to ping in and out of your network.

After all I didn't ask for a complete comparison of two Wireshark packet captures from each PC...

Knowing a bit more would help (for instance DHCP and NAT configuration, model and revision of router, possible use of proxies, IP Addresses, whether they are assigned by DHCP or not, if the problem happens on all ports or just 80-http or something else, if the machines regularly ping each other before and after the problem appears).

Quote from BlueFlame :Don't beat around the bush, are you trying to say i stated that, so people would agree with me? If anything im fitting in. That seems to be the first thing people talk about, when talking about Black people or Muslims

You only fit in some commonplaces I won't buy since they are old as racism. If someone else does, it's not my fault. But before I point a finger, I need evidence.

Quote from BlueFlame :Neither do I, but thats the only reason i can think of, that someone would Dislike Hamilton.. Well, Unless they are jealous, they aren't as succesful in life.. Its not something be Jealous about though, its an Inspiration.

The fact that Hamilton is equal to all others is self-evident to me. This means he has the same rights and can be judged by the same standards. So, if I want, I can dislike him, and I can tell for sure it would not a judgement based on the colour of his skin. In fact, I dislike some people more, the ones who try to profit - in one way or another - from that colour, bringing it into discussion any time they can to support their point of view, with no relevant evidence at all.
