Quote from mamynast :The only thing I did meanwhile was to install firefox and video downloader. Is there a link between firefox and LFS ?

I reasonably think there's no link whatsoever to having installed firefox and having freezes.

Firefox has no resident driver or library loaded in memory, so if you quit or don't run firefox while you use LFS and you still have freezes I cannot think about Firefox having any kind of role in this.

Edit: anyway you should check you don't have any stuck firefox.exe process with task manager or process explorer.

Quote from Gunn :Ferrari sued their own guy.

There's not only this.

I don't know the exact wording of the Concorde agreement, and that's really important in this case.

The tradition of justice administration in sports doesn't consider - generally - resorting to normal legal courts unless there's a mandatory criminal investigation, so you have to sign agreements that have a binding value, and generally rules are enforced in a much stronger way than in a civil court.

However in this case the outcome of the sports trial was simply unacceptable to Ferrari, so Ferrari could have talked about going to a civil court where they would have probably had an easy victory since the sports trial where McLaren hasn't been punished, but has been found guilty, is contradictory. This contradiction cannot occur so easily in a civil or criminal court (if we forget OJ Simpson's case, of course).

Moreover, if the wording of the Concorde agreement can really be interpreted as in this forum, the same agreement could be declared null and void in its entirety.

Consider this hypothesis: a disgruntled McLaren mechanic decides to damage McLaren. No information whatsoever is given by this mechanic to third parties, there's just a sabotage. Should McLaren be considered guilty in solido with the mechanic, and therefore punished for the sabotage they have been subjected to?

My answer is, very simply, no. Such paradoxical interpretation of objective responsibility would be considered absurd in a civil or criminal court, so the entire agreement could be declared null and void with nefarious consequences.

So, what happened? I have read two piece of news about it. The first one, two or three days ago, talked about Ferrari's decision not to go to a civil court to discuss the case. The second one, more recent, talks about FIA's decision to accept a review of the case.

There is a very interesting timing in these events. This is my opinion:

- Ferrari thought the outcome was ridiculous (it is, manifestly and without doubt).

- Ferrari had some informal talks where the decision to resort to civil or criminal law administration was disclosed to some selected persons.

- FIA considered the outcome of the sports trial and decided to allow a review to avoid consequences that would have hurt F1 image more than it has been up till now, and told this to Ferrari (and possibly other parties) before going public.

- Ferrari made public the decision to avoid resorting to civil/criminal law. If you consider what happened, this is quite strange. Either Ferrari felt they had something to lose or they were waiting for something to happen, and they already knew about it. Which one of the two? I guess it's not so difficult to understand, especially when...

- FIA announced the decision to refer the case to Court of Appeal.

Of course, this is just an opinion based on the few facts that appeared in the newspapers. However, there could be better (or more informed) judgements.

Quote from StewartFisher :By the same logic, was the Ferrari employee who gave Coughlan the documents also acting in behalf of the whole Ferrari team? If so, I don't see what Ferrari are moaning about. They gave the documents to McLaren!

So, in your own words, Ferrari should be held responsible for willingly damaging itself? This is a bad interpretation of the concept of objective responsibility that would be rejected by every legal court of the civilised world.

Quote from CSU1 :
I didn't really know what to say when he asked if I had experience with pc systems and stock management, it is on my CV that I obviousley do because my last job is very similar to this opening....

Everything depends on the person you'll face during the interview and on the needs of the firm. If they want someone experienced, expect a tough interview.

I can tell you how I conducted interviews in the past, but don't take it as a general rule since I work for a small firm where everything is informal and where initially attitude counts more than knowledge.

First I ask about previous experiences. I try to understand the attitude of the person in front of me, looking for contradictions. Some of them are blatant: for instance if a candidate says Microsoft is shit and Linux rules while wearing an Xbox t-shirt (it really happened) the interview ends there, although I may give a second possibility. Technical opinions are welcome, but they have to be expressed in a sensible way and have a solid basis. Sometimes I ask such opinions just to understand - from them - if the person knows what he's saying. I've heard too many people bragging about their Linux or Windows skills.

Then I try to understand if the person in front of me is really up to his CV. This is the funniest part because it's extremely simple to do but sometimes embarassing for the candidate. All I have to do is open a remote control session on a production server, state it's a production server just to make the candidate understand he has to be careful and I ask him to describe what purposes that server has.

This hands-on approach has the advantage of showing me directly part of the skills of a person. I keep questioning the candidate while I monitor him closely.

I chose three colleagues this way. I discarded, more or less, 10 candidates after an interview. More than 100 have been discarded directly after a colleague of mine read their CV to select the most honest ones. The selected Cvs then passed on my desk where I selected the best ones for the interviews.

So far I am happy about the people I chose.

Quote from br0nd :Hi,
how would I add to my website a feature so that people could register to the site and have their own control panel. Also, a profile page is possible.
Thanks in advance,

For the login feature and for content management you could try phpnuke, which relies upon an SQL database (preferrably Mysql since it's been extensively tested).

If you don't want to experience potential troubles querying the database, I'd suggest to decide for a hosting that offers PHP and SQL.

Or you can host it at home, but this could result in availability and bandwidth problems, so it's not viable if you need to have a high availability server. You can build your own test server whenever you like, just grab some packages and install them on a machine, or, as I sometimes do, on a virtual machine.

For tests I use VMWare Player with a Debian prepackaged VM. I add to that a mail server (Postfix is fine for me), a web server supporting php (Apache), PHP5, PHPNuke (but generally I rely upon proprietary PHP code, not developed by me), MySQL. These are enough for basic requirements, but you can add more stuff to your liking and needs.

Working with a virtual machine has a lot of advantages over a real machine. You can also download a prepackaged LAMP server virtual appliance to have most of the job done. There are, however, some technicalities (like, for instance, permissions and security) that have to be addressed and tested. Some network and OS management skills are always required for administration.

Quote from wheel4hummer :By standing there with a big sign calling Bush a nazi? Yeah, real useful.

Voicing dissent, whether you like it or not, is always a courageous act, and if the Indymedia post is true, it will be even more so.

Watada, Sheehan, Tillman, Sarandon, the Dixie Chicks, Lipscomb... these names are only a few, but you could name thousands of people who paid a price to voice their opinions, whether you like them or not. You fail to understand that crucial point because you don't respect it, and you fail to understand its usefulness because you don't see it as a growing process. I do. I was in Aviano with 15000 people to voice dissent about an impending war. We didn't think we had a single chance to stop it, but we were there to show we cared, with signs too.

It did make a difference at least for my conscience, and it makes a difference now that I can say, as I did time ago, that this war was both morally and strategically wrong, and lost from the start, without losing an inch of my credibility.

Read this to know more about the past and, if you're able to draw comparisons, the present.

Ooops, no, that's a practical joke because of a stupid post in this forum in which a user connected wisdom to age, which is true only to a certain extent. He got bashed by a wise 17 year old kid despite being older.
I'm 36 really. I'll watch the report later (maybe tomorrow) and edit this post if I find something I deem significant. And I'll correct my age

I generally tend to be pretty conservative with memory timings. I could even be considered an underclocker sometimes, all for the sake of stability. So, if you find my timings to be low that's up to my motherboard being old, and to me being old

The only common thing I found is the Athlon XP system. But there must be something else I don't think that only we have this kind of CPU...

In the attached file (safe html made with Aida32, rename its extension to .htm) you have my complete hardware info if you want to compare it, I have an Athlon XP 2400+. No problem at all with LFS and Trackmania United (the only stuff I play at the moment). No problem whatsoever with any other game I tried or played. I installed Win XP pro on my system more or less 3 years ago.

Additional info about PSU and fans: I use a Zalman passive cooler on my VGA adapter, and a Zalman fan on my CPU. My PSU is a Nexus NX-4090.

Here you have some of the relevant information about the last three crashes:

Probably caused by : nv4_disp.dll

Probably caused by : ipnat.sys

Probably caused by : hardware ( c6501+c4e46 ) (c6501.sys is the CMedia sound device driver)

A more detailed analysis confirms that errors are spread between unrelated drivers and modules.

This isn't normal with bad drivers. It's more often related to bad hardware, especially RAM since software in memory can be corrupted because of bad read/writes, so the CPU at a certain point can execute an illegal instruction that shouldn't have been there and the computer crashes. There's an interesting fact, though: one of the dumps hints about a sound device error.

I can't do anything else but, once again, suggest to update sound drivers and test the RAM with Memtest86 and Prime95. Easy to do, but not the only thing to try.

You have, in this thread, a lot of different hints: fans, hard disk, ram, psu. You can check all those by yourself.

To test the HD use HDTune, more info on the official site (and even in this forum).

To test the file system issue a chkdsk c: /f from a command prompt.
You could additionally check the system files for errors via System File Checker.

There isn't much else I can do now. Each program mentioned is this thread is straightforward to use and almost self-explanatory, but the official sites have short, understandable manuals in most cases.

EDIT: The BSOD I don't get a chance to look at
DK

Did you check the first link I posted? You have instructions there on how to disable automatic reboot, and an explanation.
Anyway you'll have the same info that you posted from the Event Viewer.

Addendum: I have to download the Symbols for WinXP service pack 2, but anyway I'll update the CMedia sound driver now since the debugger gives me a timestamp error about that. Without the symbols I cannot go on, so this is the last post for today, probably. A strange place awaits me for the rest of my day and part of my night. No computers there

Re-Addendum: this work is preliminary, but 3 different dumps have 3 different, unrelated modules generating an error: ipnat.sys, nv4_disp.dll and c6501.sys. This strongly suggests a hardware problem, possibly memory related.

Okay. The crash dump analysis is quite a fast process, but I have to download some stuff from Technet. I'll need some time since I don't have all that's needed at hand and I have to go away today. Don't expect anything until tomorrow.

Seems like a faulty driver. Mind you, bad RAM could give the same results.
Here you can figure out something yourself:
http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm
If you have one or two recent minidumps in c:\windows\minidump post them here. They should be no more than 92K. I'll try to analyse the minidump as soon as possible.

Addendum:
You could check drivers with dxdiag to see if there are unsigned ones, anyway if possible I'd update the soundcard driver right now, and try putting dx sound acceleration to none. I'd also give priority to stress testing the RAM with prime95 and Memtest86 (in this order). If prime95 halts during a stress test (say, half an hour) chances are that you have a faulty module. Also try to remove unneeded hardware such as USB peripherals if you can. Stripping things down to a minimum helps to exclude stuff, so identifying the problem gets simpler.

Early prognosis: heat caused by dust. Quicker than a few hours of memtesting

From what Kolkrabe wrote, I bet against overheating.
The screen going black just means his computer had a Stop error for whatever reason. The PC rebooting hints at having automatic restart enabled. So this is - really - the first and foremost thing to do.

Okay, it doesn't work it seems

For the event viewer choose start, run, type eventvwr.msc. Look at system and application sections. If you find system errors related to the crashes cut and paste here the info, and I'll try to have a look. And what does the BSOD say when you exit GPL? It would help to know that vital information, sometimes looking at those strange numbers (especially the first one) can already point you in the right google direction.

It's the nick I use always on the Internet, made by first name (abbreviated) and first letter of surname.

I don't believe Internet is separate from my real life, so I chose that once and I've always been albieg since then. The only exception is/was my blog, where I use another nick. Since I have my own domain my nickname can be easily related to my real identity.

It's a kind of policy for me, a way to take responsibility for what I say or do on the net without hiding behind multiple identities or being anonymous.

Any ideas?
DK

The problem is at the moment quite generic, so it has to be addressed with general troubleshooting procedures.
First thing to do, disable automatic restart after a failure. This will probably lead to having a blue screen with some diagnostic info. Take note of that info and start looking into the trouble from there.
In case no info is given, you should start investigating your system for hardware and software faults.
Things to check first: RAM (prime95, memtest86), Hard disks (chkdsk, HDTune, manufacturer's utilities) and ensure all fans are working and clean. Have a look at the Event Viewer too. These are things that can be done quite easily without replacing anything and, they don't require advanced maintenance and repair skills.
You'll find additional information about the things I mentioned searching in this forum.

Now the HD charts look right.

Onboard sound: it could be, but generally setting the DX accel to basic solves it, so all you can do right now is borrow an external sound card, disable the inboard sound via BIOS (or via mobo jumper) and try. Get your hands on a soundcard with a different chipset, if you can. I don't really have hints about it, I'm no expert in low end commercial soundcards and I never tried LFS with onboard sound, which I disabled and which I will always disable (I use an Egosys WaveTerminal 192X on my PC, never had a single problem, but that's a semipro soundcard not exactly suited for gamers or general use. I just ordered a M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB for my laptop).

Inconsistent PSU output: it's another good option. Do you trust your electrical company, by the way? I'm using an APC UPS right now to stabilise the AC current. I need it because I have lots of spikes in AC current and I don't want my PSU to fail because of them. Besides that, I use a Nexus PSU, so it's not exactly the el cheapo PSU that you can't trust.

About the wheel, I couldn't say anything about it.

Have you tried running your rig with a traditional PS2 wired keyboard and mouse? If you got them it would be worth doing it. I may be a traditionalist, but I ruled them out in favour of a high quality wired USB keyboard (Enermax Aurora) and an OEM Logitech basic wired USB mouse. Reducing the number of USB connections to a minimum could be worth a try.
