Bought DK1 for $250, sold it for $400 and today I bought DK2 for $380, will arrive next week. So basically, I got paid $20 to upgrade from DK1 to DK2, I don't even...
Well, I hope DK2 won't be making me sick as much as DK1 did.
Scawen could you turn player's car shadows on in the first person view? They are currently turned off (to reduce GPU usage, I guess). http://i.imgur.com/QLyVMYm.jpg
DK2 uses the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 screen (whole front panel actually). I hope they will get a custom screen made for CV1. Phone screens work quite well, but quite well is not enough. I agree that 16:9 aspect ratio is not perfect for VR, but what about the curved screen? I've seen many people suggesting it, but I don't understand what is the benefit of a curved screen. It would allow to make the headset less blocky and more ergonomic I guess...
I've heard that if you set the eye relief so that the screen is further away from the lenses makes FOV a bit better in DK2 as oposed to DK1 where closer = more FOV. You should try that, if you haven't yet.
It's confirmed that CV1 will have a better resolution than 1080p, people speculate that it's going to be 1440p, but it's just speculations. They haven't shown any new prototype since the DK2 announcement...
So I was driving like half an hour - this time fast - and I'dont feel sick, maybe a little bit dizzy. Huge improvement. Now FOV is worse, but I prefer that over sickness.
Scawen, is there going to be 2 separate modes for DK1 and DK2 in the options?
Yesterday I've tried something new. I set the eye relief to the middle setting (previously it was set to "as close to eyes as possible" for maximum FOV). I've played with some demos for like half an hour and didn't get sick. Today I've tried LFS and after ~15 minutes I feel fine. I've also turned the mipmapping off wchith makes everything a bit more sharp in the Rift. I was driving slowly so maybe that helped. After breakfast I will try some full speed driving and see if the breakfast stays in my stomach
I've also noticed something while driving MRT. Car doesn't cast shadows in the interior view. Normally that wouldn't be a problem since you can't look down, but in the Rift it's quite noticable. Would be nice if you could add an option to turn on the car shadows in first person view. And 3D mirrors would be nice, expecially with DK2's positional tracking.
I've also noticed that if i pull the Rift's USB plug off and start LFS it crashes, but it's not something I'm supposted to be doing so I don't think it's a problem.
I've tried LFS with DK1+G27 yesterday. 10 out of 10, nearly puked
No but seriously, before I got really sick, I've menaged do play for like 10 minutes. Scale seemed quite accurate, I was able to read most of the text despite DK1's low resolution and the floating HUD was nice.
I was driving FXR so I set my G27 to 540 degree in the profiler and in the game. It felt like I was looking at my own hands, it actually felt weird when I took my hands off of the stering wheel but in the game they stayed on the wheel. In VR having your virtual body really helps the immersion. I think that a proper steering wheel is mandatory, if you want to play LFS with the Rift.
I hope that the VR sickness will eventually go away. My brain just can't comprehend how can it be that I'm taking corners at 200km/h and yet I can't feel any G forces.
LFS is back in the top 5 at Oculus Share. There is some people asking for DK2 implementation, maybe you should write a comment that you are working on it, Scawen.
I've been playing a bit with my DK1 since few days and the biggest problem so far for me is the motion sickness caused by sudden movements, but my brain is slowly getting used to it. Today I've tried a few demos and I feel only a bit sick. Haven't tried LFS yet, but I hopefuly will tommorow.
Despite the low resolution, motion blur and lack of positional tracking it's still a mind blowing piece of technology. CV1 will be awesome.
Have fun with your DK2 Scawen. Hope you won't get as sick as I did the first day with the Rift. Hope you will share your VR experiences.
I've played the same replay (BLGP, 1 lap, full grid of XRT AIs) on 0.6F and 0.6F2 while measuring framerate with FRAPS benchmarking tool. Here are the results:
0.6F was released just a month ago and we are already getting ready for the next series of test patches! LFS developement is gaining some serious speed lately. Keep it up! S3 needs to finally happen.
Oh and thanks for the progress report, it's good to know whats going on.
That's why I'm hoping they will release the patch before DK2 arrives, so we can start testing Westhill while Scawen is working on DK2 support and making out with aliens... :alien2:
I've just menaged to buy a DK1 for 750PLN (~$250), should arrive before the weekend
That's half of a DK2 price (350+ 50 shiping + 98tax =$498) and if I would buy one now it would arrive god knows when, could be even October. I was actually going to wait for CV1, but I wasn't expecting I will find some reasonably priced DevKit here in Poland.
I've also bought a G27 a week ago so I'm ready for some LFS testing
So Scawen, since you will be one of the first DK2 owners, will you share your impressions once you recieve it?
What's the resolution like, better or worse than you thought?
How is the FOV?
How bad is the screen door effect?
What do you think about your Rift implementation for LFS, what's good and what needs improvement?
How is the overal experience, mind blown or not?
Are you going to cancel LFS development and apply for a job at Oculus?
How is the Alien Makeout Simulator?
S6 release date?
Ok, I think I may have gone too far with the last couple of questions...
I know that there is ALOT of high quality user made videos, but - as you can see at the Oculus Share page - devs refuse to use them.
It's ridiculous that there is not a single video of LFS at lfs.net. Oh well, if you'll dig through the news section you may find the Scirroco video - which is nicely done, but rather depressing to watch, since we are nearly 6 years later and it's still not released.
Screenshots section at lfs.net doesn't look much better. Majority is either outdated or WIP (like WE and ROC screenshots).
I don't know about you, but when I want to find out about a game, first thing I do - I go to the official website and then look for a video - to see what the game actually look like in action. If for some strange reason there is no video on the website I go to youtube and search there.
The problem is, if you search for LFS on youtube you may find a video which is outdated, contains vob mods, is plain bad or perhaps is an instruction on how to crack LFS.
Actually I've just typed "LFS" into youtube's search bar and the first result was a video of Supra vob mod tweaked to 1200hp, followed by even more videos of vob mods and some unusual onboard video... Not the best way to learn about a LFS.
And thats why LFS needs OFFICIAL videos at OFFICIAL website.
