In short:

Tcase is the temp that your BIOS and most other software tells you. The maximum for this is what the CPU manufacturers tell you. Usually 70ish.

Tjunction is the same as core temperature and is obviously hotter than than Tcase. The max temp for this is what CoreTemp calls Tjunction and is either 85 or 100 for Intel and unknown for AMD.

Keep Tcase under Tcase max and Tjunction under Tjunction max and you're fine. Many people insist that computer parts should be run at way lower temperatures than the manufacturer specs but there really is no reason to do so if you're not overclocking.

Yeah, that's just ridiculous. I always ask for the actual start time of the movie when I buy the ticket and then I spend my time outside with the people I'm with instead of watching the adverts.

btw doesnt a normal windows copy paste with fix mbr from the repair console work just fine ?

That was kind of how simple I was expecting it to be. Couldn't work it out though, copying from Windows will fail on some files that are in use and the Windows boot CD doesn't have the tools to do the copy. It would probably be possible with the right boot CD though. That would have been my next step if Acronis hadn't worked.

Thanks for the help, Acronis Disk Director Suite did the trick. The only problems I had was that Acronis messed up the drive letters and that my Windows XP CD does not support >120 GiB Hard disks. I could fix the drive letters by using compmgmt.msc though and all is fine now.

Same thing I did then.

Crashgate: the link might be useful once I actually manage to get to the stage where I have a broken windows install to repair. I haven't even got that far.

Hmm, did you run from a boot disk or did you just load up Windows normally and then start the clone software?

Anyone have luck getting their LCDs running in 50hz?

If your screen supports 50 Hz input you can force it using Powerstrip. I did and I did get smoother frame steps (checked with fraps) but I think the actual LCD panel hardware is still at 60 Hz so the improved smoothness never got as far as my eyes. But I confirm, LFS looks smoother on a CRT. There was a video in the other thread that shows the irregular framesteps from the 100 Hz physics to 60 Hz screen conversion.
How the hell do I replace a Windows drive without reinstalling Windows?

As the title says, all I want to do is replace an old hard disk with a newer, bigger hard disk. I never imagined such a simple task could be a problem.

First I thought I'd try the free cloning software "driveimage xml" to copy old to new. After copying the new drive was neither bootable or even readable.

So then I tried the Seagate software from their website but it told me I would lose all data I had already copied to the other partitions of the new drive before it even started copying.

Next Norton Ghost. Copying seemed to go well except that the new boot partition is resized to be the same size as the old boot partition even though I explicitly told it to not do so. The resulting partition was readable in Windows but neither bootable nor readable in the Windows XP boot CD command line mode.

So then I wanted to go oldschool: boot CD and then xcopy the files followed with fdisk fix mbr. Turns out neither the XP CD or the Windows ME Boot disk actually contains xcopy...

So what's next? As you can see by this post I have already wasted way too much time on what I thought would be a simple task. Why should it be this hard to replace a frigging hard drive and why is there so much software out there that doesn't work?

Now I've downloaded the Knoppix live CD but being unexperienced with Linux I've decided to ask for advice here before trying anything. Thanks for any help.

Yeah, that's a car for slaloms and design judges, not for races.

I don't count MRT as a racing car but I can't think of a way to rebut your UF1 claim.

I'd say real racers don't use it because many racing cars don't have a speedo and because reading it would shift their focus too much in terms of distance.

On the other hand I think it can be a useful piece of information to check how you are doing through a certain corner. But you would need to have a HUD projector so that you don't have to shift your focus too much. Quite possible that it simply hasn't been tried in real racing.

Yeah, lock her back to demo when you go (tell her you won't be able to play if you don't). Then you can still decide if you want to upgrade her to S2 if she shows some desire to have more than the demo cars.

The idea is that the demo should give you a taste of what S2 has to offer. It has the slowest front wheel drive road car, the slowest rear wheel drive road car and the slowest single seater racing car.

This means that if you want a more powerful rear wheel drive road car for drifting purposes then you need to buy the full version. I think that anyone who actually owns a PC should be able to pay for LFS if he want's to. Maybe the large variety of cars and tracks in the full version of LFS will even lead to a much richer environment for drifters if the scene shifts from demo to S2?

Merry Christmas to all!

When you've had a break from the hard work Scawen, I wonder if you if you might have time to write a little forum report on your FBM test day. You know, with impressions about real vs sim physics and things like that.

Cheers

Wow, makes me feel old that a thread like this comes up and nobody mentions the West Racing forum.

What was that guy's name?

(There was a fad where a guy on the forums would go on and on about skidmarks and he also liked to use the hug smiley. This ended with Scawen putting this entry in the patch log: skid marks added :hug

EDIT: LOL, I just finished reading this thread and I wasn't even the first to pick up on that.

Quote from danowat :Yep, I tried it, and it stopped the FPS problems.

To reiterate, with G25 is 15FPS less than without, and I have an HT CPU.

Have you tried switchinh HT on and off in BIOS? It's been known to cause a lot of problems.

So to recap: we've established that a stiffer differential results in more longitudinal force on the outside wheel and less on the inside.

Are you sure about that? Which wheel has more longitudinal force on it really depends on the speeds of the wheels compared to each other. It can go both ways. Usually I'd say a stiffer diff will cause more understeer both on power and coast.

But I agree that locked diffs need to be banished back to hell, together with understeer inducing brake balance.

Good to see you've narrowed it down. So now you can't install the new drivers? Try to manually delete everything that relates to logitech with regedit (but make a registry backup first).
