Bigger cars (i.e. Mondeo sized etc) will be slightly cheaper to insure.

No way will you get insured on any VXR without selling a kidney.

My first insurance premium was £2k on a 1.5L Proton shitbox.

Quote from logitekg25 :not troll....what pc operating systems are there? linux? anything else?

OSX is a "PC Operating System".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_operating_systems

Thousands of flavours of Linux (Ubunutu, Knoppix, Linux Mint, thinks like XBMCbuntu, and Unix (i.e. OSX is a derivative of Unix, also things like BSD, Solaris OS).

Theres a very good graph somewhere which shows the heirarchy (i.e. nodes linked to predecessors) which is very interesting but now I cannot find.

Quote from Specht77 :May I ask you what is your actual processor? (that you use with the GTX470)

I have a I7 2600k with GTX 560ti, and looking at the usage percentage of usage of the CPU and GPU on ANY GAME I wouldn't change my 2600k to even a 4th generation extreme...

I mean, the 2600k never got to 50% usage even on games launched on 2013, but the GPU is almost always at 100% percentage at any game...

I do believe that even if I put a GTX 780ti here, the 2600k will still not use 100% on games...

Are we talking 100% total CPU utilisation, or per core? If so if your maxing out one core, but not all cores, getting a faster CPU will still make a difference.

(100% in Task Manager = 100% on all x cores)

EDIT - and on the subject of PC's, yet another laptop - this time a 13" MacBook Pro Retina to replace my 2011 13" i7 MacBook Pro.

Another day, another laptop...

2013 13" MacBook Pro Retina, this time with a Haswell i5, 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. Depressingly I had the last one 11 months which is actually a record for me...

The records now 10 laptops in a shade over 4 years

Crikey thats quite cheap for an E60!

If you dont mind me asking, where'd you find it?

(Want a new classified site to whore when I get bored at work :shy

EDIT - "eBay". Learn to read. D'oh.

Is this a "lets see how good your image interpolator is"?

You can't compare a "900P" image upscaled to "1080P" size against a "1080P" image. It's just a ridiculous comparison.

Also, PC master race 'n all that jazz. 2560*1440 > all.

I'm not keen on VAG products in general, but my girlfriend has a MK4 Golf GTi (2.0 aka the slow one), it's done 160,000 miles (~260k), and it's hard a *hard* life. Interior is all scuffed up, every panel is marked in some way - it's never been loved. But despite that, it drives very well - and so far it certainly seems more reliable than my car (145k on the clock)

Quote from Takumi_lfs :Hey guys,

I'm into buying a bmw 320i e46 (1998-2000) for my girlfriend. I have no idea on what to inspect on the car, common issues and all. Can anyone enlighten me more about this specific model?

I have a e90 bmw which she is used to, and she wanted something similliar and the only car that I can think of is a e46.

KM is around the 180k-190k km on the odometer.

Big things will be Subframe cracks & general rust. Suspension can get a bit tired with age, specifically stuff like the front arm bushes. Auto-boxes aren't known for their reliability.

Quote from logitekg25 :but the best i could think up was thats just to show the degree of precision he was using...like its not 9 mm, not 11 mm, but 10 mm.

With the expression "1cm", I would assume it could be anywhere from 0.5cm to 1.5cm, rounded (in fact, it's highly unlikely to be exactly 1cm exactly no matter what). 1.0cm would imply that it's 1cm to 1 decimal place, but when you start bringing decimals in you might as well go for the next unit down (10mm).

The difference between a bezel of 8mm and 12mm is sizeable (i.e. one is half as much again as the other), but both would commonly be expressed as "1cm".

I don't get why people put their PC's on the table - some PC's (like the ones above!) look awesome (i'd just put mine in the "not ugly" category) - but I'd still rather have my desk for useful stuff, not stuff that could be hidden underneath with impunity...

Quote from Migz :Does anybody know where i can buy a long triple aux lead cable? The kind you'd use to connect a sound card to a surround sound setup. Its literately 3 3.5mm connections on each end of the wire. Trying to find a long one (around 5 metres) but having no luck finding any of any size on ebay :/

Surprisingly, these are quite difficult to find!

I'm guessing it's for a Z5500 or similar?

I bought 3x3.5mm cables off eBay (some fancy metal-ended ones)... they were too wide to be plugged in simultaneously (i.e. where you have 3 in a row, they were so wide that they blocked the neighbouring holes). Ended up modifying them with a dremel (not pretty) - but I'd still like to get the proper cables eventually if I can.

(I don't actually need longer ones, but I bought a second hand set of Z5500's and it didn't come with any)

Quote from Matrixi :I did have it fitted using just three rubber dampers for a while and it did certainly remove the humming noise, however seeking could still be heard slightly. What I'm thinking about doing, is getting a 1TB 2.5" laptop HDD, put it in a 2.5"->3.5" sound damping enclosure and fit the enclosure to the Scythe dampers and in to the 5.25" bay.

For the best sound damping, this is the right way, however it can't be done in most modern cases with quick release optical bays. It's also ghetto as hell and the elastic does wear out and need to be replaced after some time.

I considered this back when I had a fair few HDD's in my PC - http://www.silentpcreview.com/tichepc-hdd-vib-killer

Nearly pulled the plug but it was £40+ and a long wait at the time.

I'd be interested to know if you find it any good.

I have something similar from Sharkoon because HDD noise was driving my crazy. It also meant I could empty the HDD cage (more airflow) and move them up into the 5.25" bays for neatness.

Rubbish example:

Turning down the resolution seems to of fixed it (it still ends up at the right resolution somehow but is ok) but also so has buying a new (and very expensive) VGA cable (even though I tried with several cables before!).

Quote from Mysho :I think it's GPU driver problem, because you insert so many GPUs to your PC...

Whilst I understand the sentiment - remember this also happens on my laptop, in both OSX and Windows. I can't see how it could be a driver issue in that case.

Bump.

My friend came over today, and I had my graphics card (GTX580) in his PC, connected to this screen. Worked fine. Yet it doesnt work on my PC, or with my laptop.

Any ideas?

Quote from imthebestracerthereis :0:11 seconds in: "You get what you pay for".

... It's absolutely right!

I paid much more for my MacBook Pro for apparently the same hardware, yet I have yet to have any major issues with it. It boots up, functions normally, and exceeds my expectations. Never has it failed to boot up with an error message, no hardware faults, and never shut down on me unexpectedly.

By comparison, I've had around 10 laptops over the last 6 years and 4 have failed. 2 of those were MacBooks, both of which died less than a year old and needed to be repaired.
Weird monitor resolution problem

Got a really weird problem with one of my monitors.

I select it's native resolution, 1600x900, but I actually get a smaller box being displayed in the middle rather than the image filling the whole panel.

When I look on the OSD, the monitor says it's input is actually 1280x960, even though Windows is telling me it's set it to 1600x900.

I've tried running this off both the onboard graphics, an AMD card and an nVidia card - same problem. Also get the same problem running it off my MacBook in Windows (didn't try in OSX).

I've had this problem before but fixed it somehow (annoyingly can't remember). I packed my PC up, moved house, unpacked it all and thats when the problems started.

I found this thread which has a similar issue - http://www.techsupportforum.co ... or-resolution-419329.html

Anyone got any ideas? I'm stumped!

During 2,5 years of owning my license I've only owned 6 cars. I wouldn't really say that's a lot.

During my 5 years of driving I've owned 2.5 cars (one I drove for 5 feet, doesn't really count). My girlfriends had 3 cars in the space of 4 years.

I'd say 6 in 2.5 years is a lot.
