lfs is aimed at racing, that you can drift in it is just a bonus... says the guy who plays the game to drift or d&d

Btw, vid was pretty nice. Looks almost un savable to begin with. Wish I could understand japanese!

looks great, interesting to see a real track in lfs, Proof if ever we needed it that they are still working on lfs and i'm sure will continue to do so for a long time yet.

No major hurry, release it after june next year when I have finished my diss and have some time to play

most games use the laser scanning these days to convert real track data to games and is one of the most accurate ways to re-create a real track.

Comparison ss were great!

I was a bit of a dipshit tbh. Messing around with lfs on my linux install and using a diff install with windows (because I had to change the key combos) so ofc with two installs it unlocks 1, locks the other so I ran out of unlock keys without even realising. Ho hum. I can prob live without speed for a week or so as it replenishes the unlocks every friday I think or just use my linux lfs install.

i got there for the custom layouts because I cant concentrate for more than 5 or 6 laps. I treat it more as touring car type rules but i'm not that great a crasher.

Though recently the text seems to be a constant stream of babys complaining they got crashed into which makes it a bit less fun because then you block the chat and your in your own world.

If I was admin(glad i'm not) i'd probably have banned everyone because so many people complain rather than just playing the game respecting the few rules (only about 2) and having a laugh. People just dont 'get it'

But the admins seem ok there, sometimes they get pissed because they are only human as they often get hit with quite a lot of abuse especially if they dont ban 'so n so' instantly at the divine command of some jackass.

But the lfs model is not that great for crashes, small touches sometimes result in cars flying off each other and ofc if people are using modded/different car models then (they say) it can mess up the crash physics even more.

for me i have the most fun when i've had a decent race with a couple of people and we have exhanged a lot or a bit of paint but the end result has still been a fairly close finish.

only major problem is that there is no auto restart or ability to type !rules so people can see them in the game.

ok. i'd like to change my mind to I hate it.

Having an unlock limit for something you paid for. Lame

in any race i always have the look left and look right keys close to hand.

I've been on that server a few times, had a bunch of cool races. I naturally never win, but there are a lot of players with all skill levels and the fox car is a lot of fun.

vote ban can be annoying. I normally never vote unless someone convinces me because people make mistakes, maybe they lag or have accidentally gone to get a drink and left their car on when the race restarts.

first corners on most servers seem to be problematic, for some reason people dont respect a players virtual game space and often you get crunched by someone just pile driving their car through to try and get a good place.

It is a game, try not to get too obsessed with being no1 and you can still have a lot of fun through the whole pack or even if you end up just racing there against your own pb.

sweet. glad i did a quick forum search.

I took have recently got linux so it's nice to know this game runs under it as it's the main game i currently play.

I straight away went off and tried it after reading this post. I assume the multiplayer works online too but it's pretty cool. Even runs proper full screen if you let linux handel the window manager else I found with the duel menu of gnome it was getting stuck in between. Two buttons on my playstation 2 controller do not work in linux. Thankfully they are X and O but i can still map the buttons. There probably is a different driver out there I can or need to use.

Overall, cool
More lfs vids - thanks tlcook.

Well my friend who got me into lfs (user name tlcook) saved a few of my other lfs vids I sent him (I always send him first versions) and posted them up as I'd deleted them off my comp.

Thanks tlcook.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v ... dFG78&feature=channel - Lfs test vid #2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v ... wxclg&feature=channel - Team Drift Drifting vid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v ... lIvNuA&feature=channe - This was actually a lfs promo vid as well. Made for fun.

I class all my vids inc my newest one posted under my user name as pretty rubbish but if you think any of them are any good. I only use windows movie maker to save them.

If you have an suggestions to a better programm please let me know. Windows movie maker kills the sound and video quality.

I raley make lfs vids. But this is ideally supposed to be a lfs promo vid but windows movie maker ground the vid quality and audio quality into oblivion. ugh.

However let me know what you think of the concept/video (imagining that audio and vid were better quality)

it managed to figure out what 1st track was, but not 2nd so might get banned soon. But was really just a bit of fun.

I play lfs with a pad. Though i'm not that great at it as for one thing my ps2 pad is a bit knackerd and i have to push the stick diagonally right else the breaks stay on, and it idles quite high and generally the sticks are not as smooth as they used to be. But overall I can still have fun. But I do feel more confined to the drift/d&d servers as i'm fairly slow at racing which sux a bit and find it hard to stay concentrated looking at the screen for over 2 or 3 laps.

I have to say though that I could probably not drive my real car with a ps2 controller... however i'm no so sure for certain as in a real car you get a lot of feedback from the car through your ass as well as just through the steering wheel and ofc being strapped into a mooving object which has the effect of g force tugging at your body parts helps you feel your car.

So sure using a wheel will make it easier to play the game as well. If you have driven a car then using a wheel in a video game is similair. I originally rode a scooter before i had a car and it took me time to adjust to driving a car. I'd often in my lessons grab the wheel to stop rather than going for the pedals.

I think the only way a sim can ever feel like a real car totally is if you are overflowing with cash and can afford to set your lfs up inside one of those boxes which has the hydraulic arms that shakes you around and stuff. If you have ever gotten into one of those car simulators where you go into the box and then the screen plays and you get shaken around. I went in the colin mcrae one which had him in his impreza and i could not drive and that felt so real even though i was just the passenger and i'll freely admit I was terrified as the expirience was so alien and just like an explosion to the senses.

But overall a sim no matter what it is just a sim. lfs can help you understand car controll, weight distribution, etc but chances are even with a wheel you would not be able to drift a real car. Though it might give you a head start in understanding the fundamentals of what to do.

I think though if lfs had a good damage modeling implemented then I think it would cause players to be more aware of their virtual surroundings

Lfs is good though. It's one of the hardest racing games i've ever played yet the niggling tiney bugs such as the bouncy barriers and randomly being shot into oblivion do annoy me whenever it happens. Not enough to stop playing as the rest of the game is pretty well done.

Still credit where credit is due. For a 3 man team it's pretty impressive epecially as you have all the web based stats pages and such that come with the game and the cool virtual race track that lets you admin/watch your players on your server and being able to upload your own skins, see your best times online and all the other lfsw stuff.

However, for the price of the game I think you do get quite a big bang for your buck. I would welcome new tracks and cars and would not mind paying a little for them but that is unlikey to happen.

I went a little off topic. But oppinions are free and everyone has one.
National Drift Server

hey all. Hope i put this in the right spot. Just a small ad for the forum goers.

Decided to rent a server slot from 500 servers. Not a team server.

Name: National Drift Server

Admins : Kingston & T

Type: Drift

I dunno about you but i've got pretty tired of chicane drift server and it not having any admins or the vote ban/kick enabled that I decided to rent a server for drifting on. I've only put a months rental on it to see if people use/like it.

All is welcome, vote kick is enabled/ vote ban for when an admin is not around. Got the lapper running so you can drift for score if you want to.

You can change the tracks yourself if enough of you get bored with whatever is running and no admin is around and do end race. Though I think T keeps a private eye on things.

Be sure to set your options to see empty hosts if no one is on as i'm sure people will join you.

Please do not ban people for honest mistakes as people do crash by accident.

We do have some personal autocross layouts we might use from when I was in Team Drift (think t is still doing that) but I will leave free reign to players to controll the tracks/players as they want. We did have a set of team drift servers but the hosting did not work out and we never use them. Laggy.

Hope you have fun if you read this message and if ya dont then dont get offended if you see me in-game as i'm fairley quiet.

yep. Gotta learn to be out of controll before you can really improve on being in controll.

Racing "Gripping" will almost always be faster than sliding/drifting less it's a tight turn that is harder to get around driving it rather than sliding it as everyone else has said.

if this guy is still playing then here's some pointers.

whatever car ur using I sort of drift like this but words are hard as i cant say how much to turn n that. Also. My set that I use is set for more understeer on the xrt.

Depending on the corner of course.

start off at the outside of the corner so you can slide in an keep on the track.

When going fast and going into a sweeping corner then keep the power on turn slightly hard and then let the power off real fast then put power back on and you should be sliding then blip it and countersteer. Amount of blipping you have to do you have to learn or you might be able to just keep it floored.

If your going slower I normall do a small flick and as the car becomes unbalanced and it's not sliding then quickly blip the throttle and steer harder in then countersteer and blip or keep it flat.

Sometimes use the e-break but thats normall only used minorley for saving a bad slide.

I also use the gears a bit too. Especially if you've gone too fast you can often make it look sort of ok by dropping a gear and booting it and also if you loose too much rpm during the turn then you can keep it going by dropping a gear.

The main thing though is practice, practice, practice as even with the keyobard you can keep hitting the throttle on and off and get it to drift. Need to get used to finding balance and when the car slides and knowing before the car is going to slide and what works best with the setup in your car.

eventuall it all becomes automatic just like driving a real car and u'll end up thinking more about how you can keep it sliding rather than how to make it slide.

I personally use a ps2 controller and it does the job.

yep then when you go to the options screen under driver you can choose your helmet skin by clicking helmet name under the model of your driver and then selecting which helmet skin you want to use.

never had that problem. Maybe your shifting down at too high a speed for gear your in or holding the throttle open while downshifting.

tweek doesnt work on most of the servers online unless they have some thing i forget but i think you have to install it or something on your server before it will work online in its current version.

Drive better and you will go faster. Doing some exorcise to loose some weight will help too in lfs.

there is a flames that looks kinda like the one on that truck.

however your probably going to be doing a lot of trial and error and using the lfs model viewer all the time making changes, saving and re-loading the skin till you know where things align on the flat skin.

The front end of the uf is split into 2 bits so it might take a while.

use Master Skinnerz templates http://skinnerz.proboards26.com/index.cgi & at least then you will know the exact skinnable parts

Good luck. How hard can it be?

UFR and XFR

ufr is faster cornering and will roll if you hit a curb too much but xfr has higher top speed and is more stable when hitting bumps. In a race both cars are very even and I have found it to be really good fun racing. I think the ufr is probaly harder as you need to get the corners right all the time but the xfr you can make more mistakes and use your straight line speed to make up time. I think the ufr is more prone to chewing its tires if you just floor it all the time than the xfr? Ufr is quite funny because on a track like south city with all the bumps you do get bounced around a lot. But I like the ufr the most as it's basically a mini 7 and the mini is my fave car of all time.

I find the fzr definatley a tough car to handel when I first started. Still do a bit. You have to be smooth with it on steering and throttle as it can slide quite easily and oversteer out of corners and is not so easy to catch an fzr slide but if you drive it well I think it's faster than the xrr. fzr does seem to eat its tires on some setups. Xrr is ok. I've driven it once, never raced and it's alright. I like its dash though, feels more like a race car on the in car mode than fzr and it is overall an easier car to drive turbo lag asside. But I think it has a tough time vs the fzr and fxr if these players are good at least from what i've seen in races. But even a bad player can go fast in the fxr.

Just for fun as my feet are in the real world.

I dont think most of the current lfs cars get used half enough such as ufr but meh & I quite like most of the current lfs cars.

some slow cars

Lotus Carlton

http://www.pistonheads.com/pic ... 736/lotus%20carlton-L.jpg

Escort Cosworth

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/ED ... _escort_cosworth_rear.jpg

Ferarri F40 (my fave car in the world ever)

http://www.seriouswheels.com/p ... 40-Red-Front-Angle-st.jpg

Mainly any other racing spec car like as other guy said scirocco race car & another racing cart.

& if a s3 were to come out I would like the bouncy barriers sorted as this is my most hated bug of lfs. Encounter a barrirer during a crash, hitting it and being shot into the sun by it. This is the only thing I do not like about lfs in its current incarnation.

I think this is a good idea and the stop should be 30 seconds or something for everyone.

Maybe you could set that you have to change driver after 3h (for a 6h race) and then the pit stop is longer than normal then a window opens up and if you dont pit during this time then you get disqualified.

Might be a bit harsh but would eliminate people cheating the system as people would. If you could do it like that anyway.

12h on your own? 20 cans of red bull and a packet of biscuits

I've driven a real car for 8h in one go but this is not that long really. But you stay concentrated becase you don't have a re-set button.

I forgot to read the other posts...

Payable unlockable mode as lets face it to learn lfs in dry day time is task in its self.

As with other people. Rain & night would ideally have to come as a package with air temperature.

In my oppinion(and I have limited knowledge) it's too much a task for one person with a family to build this any time soon.

For the poll I chose rain as that seems easier for now.

I would assume better damage modelling would be next on his list.

Such a daunting task to keep developing this game though with such few staff.
