Ok... I think the other vid pretty much failed so that one has been binned.
So. Here is version 1 of a type of vid i'm used to making. Not quite as good as my other crash vid as I had limited material on my comp. I had fun making it though. Quite short as well.
Some clips drag on a bit long i'll admit and it could use some variety but hopefully I did a bit better this time.
Uhm or it may fail again - I should really start using a better vid making tool. Windows Movie Maker is a bit limiting.
These are about the specs. It's getting on a bit now. But it's on 24/7 and (toutch wood) never had a malfunction and been lugged around countless places. My most reliable pc to date.
It's a lightly modified packard bell.
Standard Packard Bell Case
250watt psu
nvidia geforce 9500gt
Pentium 4 @ 3.06ghz
2GB ram (4x512)
Sunshine Motherboard
I-NIC 19inch screen
800gb storage space (150gbx250gb internal & a 400gb external drive thats now in its 3rd case in 2 years)
Generic pc speakers
Ps2 game controller
Windows XP Pro/Ubuntu 9.10
I'll probably get around to trading it in for something newer but as my fave games bf2 & lfs run adequate fps I see no reason to change.
Looks pretty nice. I remember playing gt3 on the ps2. I don't think I ever completed it all as there was so much content though I ended up doing that whole thing of racing, getting lots of money then slowly buying and customising each of my fave cars.
Looks awesome though gt5. Just a shame i'd have to buy a playstation just to play it.
I hate the way they release a prologue for every episode of the game. People buy the prologue then the full game so thats what, about £63 after getting prologue then the full game (current amazon prices). Great money spinner.
But probably worth it if your a die hard racing geek and have lots of disposable income or nice parents
I guess you can at least note that gamers gernally never get into win vista and that the steam users at least prefer NVIDIA.
I think in a year or so when you check this page most people will have upgrade to win 7 and the nvidia/ati 'battle' will be more equal. I'm running it on my laptop (single 2.2ghz cpu, 1gb ram) and everything appart from games run great with win 7.
It's quite interesting to note that it's intel with nvidia and amd with ati as both processor/cpu % seem to match up about the same.
I likes stats. As long as people don't try and do bad things with them.
You have to be connected to the net to do anything. It's going to appeal to people who are always connected to the net or always on the move with their netbooks. Built on linux.
There are people who simply use a computer for only online.
But for me it's pretty wank. I just cant see the point tbh.
Then again you could just get an iphone or another one of these fancy phones that does everything.
I'd never use it here, the internet is not stable enough to the point where i would entrust doing work online and risk loosing anything. Call me old fashioned but I like to have my homework on my computer in my room and if it blows up in my face near me then hell, i've only got myself to blaim for not backing it up.
It's a great idea, credit where credit is due and i'm sure there will be lots of people who will love and enjoy it. But internet failing with a deadline the next day. I cant imagine this will get adopted by many undergrads or school kids who rely on their pcs and have deadlines.
But I could be wrong, this could be the way forward for all I know and I could just be the old guy flaming it.
My only advice which i'm sure you have tried is to run lfs in the lowest screen resolution and lowest gfx and see if it improves, if it does then gradually crank up the rez till it starts to really slow down.
If this works then it's probably your gfx card.
In multiplayer you can get fps drop that normally does not last long through server lag or some lag of some sort.
I had a brief google of your machine and the cpu and as you stated the memory should be up to the job
"My ATi HD2600XT has "only" 256MB and I'm running LFS at full graphics, so it is not a problem"
These are the two cards i've had in this machine so far(both came with 512mb video memory):
GeForce 9500GT - about 60 - 70 fps full grid and 90+(displayed) fps with just me or when i'm around a few cars.
GeForce 7200 about 40 - 50fps low settings on 800x600 rez
This is my pc spec:
single Pentium 4 @ 3 or 3.6ghz (I forgot it's been so long)
2gb ram
geforce 9500GT
screen rez @1280x(well whatever the max in-game selectable rez is) and everything else full
Not a high spec by any standard neither. Does the job though
Why is it lame to use GIMP, better to use something that was created for free than steal an illegal copy of ps which if people told the truth most people have a stolen version.
Then again there must be some kind of protection companies can invent to stop geeks stealing their shit.
A simple solution to this problem in my limited view rather than just removing this altogether would to add classes such as:
Locked Diff
Non locked
So server makers can put filters in so when people join a server that does not allow locked diff with a setup that has a locked diff they cannot enter.
No idea how such a system of similar would be able to add to some future version of lfs mind.
People will automatically assume you crash on purpose because so many people do crash on purpose.
The viewing of the replay outweighs the word of the individual because so many people are prone to lying.
You may say you do not crash all the time but this post seems a bit pointless without any replays as you can still show a replay objectively without trying to pass blame.
Try and take the viewpoint of other people who say your a crasher and from this either let them complain or adjust your driving style so they don't complain.
if you are running a low psu than what you need for your system correct me if i'm wrong but i think all parts of the system get a strain put on them.
I did a quick google and this is what someone else? asked about a similair gfx card (coppied the main bits of the question)
I'm planning on buying a Gigabyte 512MB 8800GT, upgrading from my old 7600GT. I have a 430w Thermaltake PSU right now and probably it won't be able to handle the 8800GT.
1. Supposing the 430w can't handle the 8800gt, but I get one anyway, for how long will the PSU go before something happens?
2. If something does happen, what will? I mean will my computer explode if the PSU can't handle the pressure, or will it break some parts inside, or will it just power off?
550W will do you fine for as long as you use the 8800GT stock but is cutting it close if your OCing. I would suggest the 600w model for high end GPU's.
Ok, what will happen if I install the 8800gt on the 430w PSU? Will it explode? Or just break?
probably will not start up, and if it does boot into windows you will likely not be able to play games. you cant really break something by not giving it enough power.
I used to race there a lot last year, admittedley a lot of the time near the back but still a great server, there was a wide range of talent there so practically guarenteed a scrap with someone at your skill level if if not always being first.
I've found as long as your polite, try not to cause accidents but appologise if you do and don't start being a tosser by complaining if an admin complains at you bcs they don't know what your like unless you play there all the time. Else you end up just being another ass crasher.
Sometimes you can crash through lag especially at the start and sometimes what look like small taps can turn into carnage. The race is not allways won on turn one which is something people forget on a propper racing server like this and if you are faster than the other guy then there is normally places to overtake and I forgot but if must pit is enabled then you can sometimes work a strategey in to beat your opponents too.
But it's one of the best servers to race on and always a lot of players there, plus the fox is a fantastic little car that is quite easy for all skill levels to use.
does this work also if you run your lfs from xp then go to the same disk and run it from ubuntu.
I have tried it a while ago and know each os requires it to be unlocked and every time you switch os it re-locks. i.e unlock ubuntu then go xp and unlock then go back ubuntu and have to unlock.
you have to engage the gears if you are using manual gears so doing hand break is this really much of a change.
Just one extra step you have to go through which might add that extra bit of realism to a start.
Even silly people can operate a handbreak at green light in a real car so if lfs is trying to imitate real life then I think people would manage it?
Turn the car on
break/handbreak goes on
push clutch in
rev up to xxx rpm
put it into first
let go of the handbreak
let out the clutch
Even with the auto clutch option that sounds quite simple.
Or people could let off the handbreak and hold the car on the breaks at a start.
I agree initially there would be many wrecks as people get used to it, but people wreck because they forget to put the car into 1st gear at start and after a while it would become habit or put it in reverse as they are fiddling at start. (or was that just me )
To be honest i thought it was pretty obvious that these two are different as partly the car skins pictured on each site are different and the names different and the team members different.
I always used to like the redline racing servers when they were populated.
Well. When I had games on my pc (deleted all to get on with uni work)
I only have a single 3.6ghz cpu with a 9500gt (512mb version) 2gb ram, xp pro and I get between 70 - 90 fps running 1280x1024 with full aa and I think most stuff on max. (never bothered looking much)
Live For Speed does not use much resource.
You sure nothing is broken in your machine. This sounds quite odd based on your spec.
Good luck though. Nothing worse than something that does not seem to work properly out the box. U'll prob find it's something incredibly simple you missed or did wrong.
The only prob with adding music is really if you intend to post it to youtube as then it can sometimes delete it even if you legally paid for the tune.
I you do use music then it's sometimes cool to synch the music with some of the beats or rousing parts of the song.
Here is my example using windows movie maker (which is pretty standard) that I made a while ago which starts with nice peacefull music and the action has has loud bashy music to try and make the vid feel more exciting.
I mainly made the vid change on the symbol hits or part of a lyric.
You may also find it takes a lot of recorded lfs action to fill the time as no one wants to watch a 3 minute vid of someone just playing lfs as we can all do that.
And of course your fist attempt may not be that good. (damn tlcook for keeping it) linky
But the main thing is to have fun making it.
Have a look at the vids done by other people on this website and see why people got 5 star ratings.
It's often quite simple things
Mood of the vid
Effects/vid editing
Quality of the frapsing
Whether the vid makes you feel anything good or shows something unique or unusual.
Type of music
Types of camera angle, again somethng different/unusual.
Whether the vid keeps your attention (I have an extreemly limited attention span)
Whether the vid is any fun
Just some random real ones I found that may or may or may not insipire you that combine a lot of what I listed.
