In its current form, LFS will be dead in 10 years.
Unless the whole graphics side of thing sees a major overhaul, and there are significant content additions, it really won't continue to stand a chance in the sim racing market. LFS' graphics have already been labelled out of date by some (although I personally think they're good compared to rFactor, for example).
Until the low-poly models and hideously low res interiors of the S1 cars are improved, it just cannot compete with some of the new releases. These somewhat detract from the new level of detail and quality first seen in the FBM, and continued through the Patch Z interiors and Scirrocco/Rockingham.
The core physics engine is (IMO) quite safe staying as it is, as it continues to be above even the latest games.
A major new release / series of releases is the only thing that will keep LFS going for another 10 years. I don't see how a game that will effectively be 18 years old can compete with fresh releases that make use of the latest technology and software/hardware capabilities.
Whilst I do agree with you, what you want is verging on impossible to do.
We've (My team and I) have attempted to run servers with unusual combos before, and as a general rule, they fail epically. No matter how much encouragement you give people, they don't want to race a combo if they're no good at it. This covers both cars with *interesting* handling such as the RAC and MRT, as well as perhaps the more powerful cars like the LX6.
The problem about running these servers is you can't initially get enough people into your server to make other people want to join. If the server isn't populated, people won't join it.
You can't really blame server hosts and admins, because some try hard to push the more unusual combos, but their efforts are useless if the net result is 2 people in their server. The tried and tested combos are used by many because that's what gets people in their server, and for many hosts/admins, that's what is most important.
Just had a quick shower of snow here (about an inch or so), but this has brought gridlock to my entire town
Every road in the entire town is now like a skating rink (literally). The roads are so slippery that you would struggle to bring the car to a stop even from 5 mph. Cars are sliding down hills from virtually standing still.
It is actually a disaster.. All the grit bins are empty with no plans by the council to refill them until after Christmas, all the cars are getting stuck and sliding into each other.
We managed near to that earlier this year on the NDR Public Racing Server... At least one admin was present for most of the day, and any wreckers would be dealt with a 999 ban, with warnings/kicks to people driving like prats.
This combined with shouting at people to be careful, brake in time, and give room at Turn 1 worked actually quite well. Several times we got through T1 completely incident free.
Maybe I speak for myself then... My road has about 4 grit bins , and Surrey council had an absolute GRIT-MANIA session on Thursday night. They gritted practically every paved surface (including pavements) in the entire town
Well I'm getting my Dad a 2-in-1 salt and pepper shaker (for ultra fast seasoning :razz, some aftershave stuff (the stuff has at the moment is as old as me), and some other crap.
I don't really know what I want for Christmas.. I've asked for a BBOTG 2009-10, coupla games and a DVD.
On a sort of side note, why do friends/family that you don't see very often always send you deodorant and washbags for Christmas. I've got about 541 cans of deodorant still to use up, and about 48 washbags in which to put them all
