Quote from Klutch :LOL, do you live in a crackhouse?

its the basement of my friends house, they had a GIANT pair of pants and they told me to put them on, in which i discovered i can fit in them up to my shoulders.

i have only driven an e46 around a parking lot (in other words i know nothing about the car), but i would recommend getting a sedan. more room, more versatility, happier passengers, more space, slightly longer. seems like a win for me. this will convince you:

doesn't get too much better than that, especially for nearly oem looking.

im trying to honestly get some opinions from people who could care less about the ordeal before i argue some more with my dad on why i should give it a shot; from all of this i have decided it is a good idea to check it out and potentially buy.

my dad thinks its way too far, i think for something nice you have to extend your range; you gave me the unbiased opinions i needed.

the model itself is somewhat maintenance heavy, and when things break they need somebody who can wrench, i believe that is what he meant by that jakg (i also doubt he thought about every sentence he typed that carefully...:razz.

in my area, and beyond for that matter, they are going for 6k all the way up to 13k for the special edition one. (basic terms, the 2003 m-tech 540i is the specific).
the ones on the lower spectrum are usually somewhat tired.

"is the car still available? "

"Yes it is. Nice, straight running car. I'm a car guy, I also have an e28 M5 and 911C4. I just don't want to make time to work on the e39. Thanks, Jon"

"it is in good daily-driving condition? what year is it?"

"Yes it is a great daily driver, would not hesitate to drive it cross country. It's a 1999. Shifts well, quiet engine, no leaks, cold AC, always maintained well, but at this point I'd rather sell it someone who doesn't mind a little wrenching. Receipts from new. Front tires will need to be replaced in the near future but are good right now, rear tires have 5k on them. No shimmy at any speed. It's a clean, straight driver. I can send you a list of all the work done... clutch, seals etc. Thanks, Jon

PS. Since you don't know me, or the car... I have a very good reputation within the Porsche community. I mainly hang out on PelicanParts.com site. If you want to research me I go by 87911jon. My 540 is a nice car, definately not a patched up clunker."

"this is very tempting, how far would you drive to meet me. i will gladly drive way more than half, but 8 hours one way is pushing it "

"I would gladly meet you halfway. Somewhere near an Amtrak station would be great. I also have a spare sports springs and shocks from my old Dinan 540. You won't be disappointed. Jon xxx-xxx-xxxx"

"is this a 540i sport?
my dad is going to want to put it on a lift, are there any shops around the amtrak station? trying to not be a hastle, but we just looked at a 540 with fist-sized holes in the floorboards, and my dad wont let me touch the car without his inspection."

"It is a 540 Sport. And I have no problems putting it on a lift. We could stop at any oil change place and I will pay to have them put it on a lift. It has no rust what so ever. "

"now, not saying anything for certain, but would this weekend work? i may be able to get work off, but i definitely want to check this car out asap."

he diddnt gloat, or just tell me that he is known in the porsche community; he wanted me to know about his background with cars.

@e2, those do seem pretty bad, but me and my dad can turn wrenches, and most of those are no different from the 528 i already have; i think im going to go for it...idk what else i would look for otherwise

If i go down there, i will be getting it a ppi if it visually looks good. Along with that, he is a forum member at pelicanparts and well known in the porsche community (not saying this makes it good, but this is what he told me)

Why are you against a v8 bmw e2? Your opinion is among the most important here..i understand the maintenance is far greater, timing chain guides, cooling system, seals, vaccume leaks etc, but owners love them?

He sounds like an older guy, and i think its worth checking out when i cant find another for less than 6000.
He has other people, but i asked first

i need opinions:

i am in the market for an e39 540i, and there are none affordable in good condition typically in my area. (mostly rusted to sh1te).

i live in Massachusetts and am interested in a car from Maryland. This is about an 8 hour drive one way; the guy is willing to meet me half way.

now why this one? 145k miles, service records since new, good owner, exactly what im looking for, maintained, no rust, etc.

he is asking $4000 firm. he is willing to pay to put it on a lift wherever we meet to prove to me that the car is almost perfect. (needs a passenger side regulator which he has, abs module rebuild for about $150, and the wipers dont work which is about $150 for a used motor)

i find this a phenomenal deal, even for the day trip, but my dad finds it too far, and not a good enough deal to travel that far.

would you do it for a clean example of what you will be driving for the next few years?

EDIT: also throwing in sports springs and shocks from a dinan 540 he used to have

so obviously the engineers who design and refine the suspension know what they are doing, and have most likely made a great design for the intended purpose; how can you improve the handling ability of a car?

i know a drop will lower the COG, but wont they upset the geometry of the suspension? where is the point where it all turns into backwards progress?

in other words, enough bickering about how sl@mm3d cars are slow, and realize that he isnt looking for a fast car (i hope)

i have the setup you are reffering to.

DXtweak + joystick makes it work great as a handbrake

pop the plastic piece off the top of the shifter to get to the screw, unscrew it, and ya done.

pm me if you have any other questions about it, i dont moniter this thread usually, you got lucky

im pretty frugal with my money....but did you just bring up a COMPLETELY different subject just to get back at me? make that two

i dont quite see how a breakup or two in the past 12 months nor my nationality effects this....but lets ignore that..

my point was not so much that its a big part of your salary, but that you contradict yourself insultingly blatantly.

you have already proven to everybody that you argue, live, act, and think like your 12; so whatever

so you try to prove your point by saying drugs are cheap enough to not live by 'enough money for drugs, enough money for engines' -- yet you say 'living here is expensive' in direct reference to drugs being expensive.

am i the only one who thinks 300$ even every 3-4 months on drugs is ALOT of money?

only criticism's

the beginning -- the drifting from hell is a little corny if i can admit

at times the audio seems a little unrealistic...like the cars get further away but sound stays same volume, or just doesnt quite match what is going on with the video (as in you can tell its external audio)

but after the first minute when i stopped trying to notice, i enjoyed it muchly

now i was just admiring how each piece of the skin follows some line on the car somewhere...how long do you spend on each little stripe/aspect of the car? do you bounce a few ideas, or do you typically know?

what i have seemed to gather is mothers is for someone who is going to take the time to do every step to perfection. meguiars seems to be a good way to get a nice looking car a bit quicker. they seem to take alot of pride in their 'quick detailer', where idk if mothers even has something 'quick'

a mothers clay bar just seems more desirable than a meguiars clay bar
