It really does make the cars handle more like real cars. Transfers like throttle to brake or even throttle off/on don't upset the cars balance so much anymore!
After optimizing the cars setup the handling of LFS's cars should be even better.
(Never would have dreamt all this would come so quick! Great work!)
Lowering the mip bias, making it more negative, does seem to reduce the lines. The white patch however stays, and wasn't there with the standard textures.
I also have widescreen, 24"CRT, and used to play with that sort of FOV.
Now however I've switched to 50-55 degrees FOV. Only downside is now I have to use virtual dials and I can't see the side mirrors. But, it's so much more realistic, and easier to drive optimal lines for me!
Ps. My monitor has just started giving some problems since last week, flashes and thin diagonal line, so I'll be looking for a replacement.
Hmm..
This is rather funny because I haven't seen anyone mentioning stuttering of frames and sound with V6.
However I have this problem on two different pc's since the upgrade from V5 -> V6.
System1; AMD athlon 64 3400+ and ATI 9800PRO
System2; AMD athlon 64 3200+ and ATI 9600XT
System2 is effected the most and you can spot some short delays in just a few seconds. The FPS however stay in the 75-85 range.
With system1 it's not so obvious, so maybe 1 min. it runs as it should but there are some definate, short delays in both sound and frames once in a while. The FPS however is in the 95-110 range. Vsync on, 93Hz, doesn't help.
I have used all the testpatches from V1 up to V6 with no problems. Before V6 LFS ran a smooth as possible on both pc's as you would expect from such FPS.
I know this won't be able to help you with something concrete. But I just thought I should let you know.
(All these observations have been made in single player mode)
It's really strange because on the pc speakers DaveWS's sounds make the engines sound like engines. But on my hifi they give them a more synthesized sound.
So actually the complete opposite. I totally don't understand it.
First I tried them on my dads PC with some ordinary PC-speakers. And I must say it sounds great and very realistic also what is a great achievement. A huge improvement.
However when I tried them on my own PC, connected to a hifi with B&W speakers, they sound odd. The resulting sound is somehow completely different. This is without using any EQ what so ever.
After comparing them A->B with the original LFS sounds I must honestly say that, on my hifi, the originals are better/more realistic.
It seems that with good hardware you can allready hear more detail in the original sounds.
They do sound great however on average PC speakers.
Ati videocards have a maximum horizontal rendering limit of 2400 pixels.
So in practice this means 2400x600.. 3 times 800x600.
Maybe this can explain some of your problems. Although It should only effect you if the primary/rendering card is an ATI.
-SoftTH is an increadible peace of work and I cannot wait to play with it.
I first need to upgrade to PCI-Express and NVIDIA cards. However i'll wait a while for LCD's to get cheaper. I'm not in that much of a hurry with a 24" CRT at 1920x1200.
I would like to try eDimensional shutter glasses but unfortunately they are, also, not fully functional with ATI cards.-
I understand that. But I mean in general, so with all cars and all different setups. I think the issue is maybe the tyres having to much grip with more weight on them or either (more likely to me) too little grip when having less weight on them.
I definately feel this is a huge difference between driving in real life and in LFS. But I have never seen anyone mention it before.
Overal there is a massive improvement in sound every testpatch since U32! U36 is the best ever! Only I did prefer the slightly more dampened sound on the FZ5, it seemed more like a road-going porsche.
There is indeed a very loud midbass with some cars. Even with volume down, so I can hardly hear anything, it's still loud. (This is with no equalisation whatsoever on a very neutral soundsystem.)
I must say the sounds are very promising. I feel many people are unrealisticly difficult about them.
Overal my opinion is, listening on a high end soundsystem;
The sound now consists of so many more details and it feels much more like real life. Which is the ultimate goal of this SIM. Skid soundlevel is perfect as standard, you really can tell the skids are coming from outside the car.
Allready I like it a lot more. I see how much is possible by just equalizing/mixing what we have now. Yes some cars sound a bit off. But overal it is increadible for what is a new sound system. And the system is great. The sounds delivered in this testpatch are more than good enough in showing the potential.
