Nine Inch Nails - 3 Ghosts I

For picking a Linux distro, I'd recommend Debian. Ubuntu's based on Debian, and Debian 'testing' makes for a rock solid system. It's really really customizable from the start. Been using it for years. Try it out!

Well you'd be helping to do simulations of protein folding which helps find cures for various diseases. You can read about it on their website. You're basically helping their research.

The Sandisk Sansa e200 series is great, I have an 4 GB one, but it can take a microSD card so it's expandable storage. Battery life is great too.
