Quote from JCTK :to make it worse, we got a dose of "engine equalisation" to some extent too...

or as Horner had another way of saying it, since the engine are frozen now, they "should not be a performance differentiator".

i don;t like the frozen rule but i think horners right about the equalisation being needed if engines are frozen. imagine if BMW had found a killer engine design before the freeze came in but covered it up by deliberately running with bad engine mapping to reduce it's power. then after the freeze they used a proper map and had a 80 hp advantage and the other manufacturers were not allowed to alter their engines to equalise the performance. while it mat be preferable to have the engine free to be developed if you're not allowing it you can't allow that freeze to hand a pernament advantage to users of one engine for the next X years. a better alternative may have been to find another way of equalising it such as allowing renault engined cars stickier rubber so we had cars with differing charectoristics.

try and find a few mates to practice with in a private hosted server. running with other cars there is so different to running in clear air, hence all the carnage when the regular dallara series runs there. also try and work on a setup/ style that protects your tyres, if you can last longer than the other guys then you can be more flexible about stops

going back to the problem with overaking, they need to have big rethink on the tyre compounds. at the moment the softer tyre is too durable and not fast enough compared to the harder compound.

what they should have is a soft compound that gives maybe a 4 second a lap advantage but which only lasts 15 laps on half tanks at a circuit like australia. also make it so you don't have to use both compounds and the limit on tyre sets becomes any 4 dry sets in the race. finally make it so all the cars start on the tyres they set their fastest qualifying time on. the soft tyre shouldn't fail when it's worn out just wear down to a very hard surface that gives the harder compound a 5 second a lap advantage

now what strategy do you use ? go like stink at the start on soft but with the heavey fuel load probably have to change after 8 or 10 laps or use the harder compound? if you start on the harder compound, you may have bad track position, do you go the whole race without stopping or do you change to soft when you think you can make it last? you're stuck behind a car on hard tyres what do you do, stay put and hope to pass or go for fresh soft and hope you can make the time up and then be in a car with a lot more grip ? if you really screw your soft tyres will you be forced to run on hard at the end becuase you have no more sets to use or can you live with shot soft tyres and defend for the last 10 laps?

this scenario doesn't have to raise cornering speeds above current levels, just make the soft less durable and then make the hard slower than it is now

had to laugh, finally got round to reading this mornings papaer and commenting on hamiltons road offence the genreral opinion amongst drivers was that any other country in the world the cops would have applauded and taken photos. the one driver backing the cops? webber who said that hamilton needs to improve his driving standards before he causes an accident, talk about your words coming back to bite you

oh that was definately one of the most strange decisions in recent F1, button effectively ended up being williams' third biggest sponsor that year by the time he'd bought his contract back off williams

despite liking webber i'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that he's past his best. also notice how vittel has the worst reliability out of the red bulls, is it pure chance or is he harder on the machine ? either way will we be looking back in 30 years and calling him germany's stirling moss?

great passing by hamilton, not sure we can draw any conclusions on the tyre wear thing yet as he was bound to be harder on his tyres just because he had to work his way up the order after being held in the pits when changing from inters, not sure even then if he actually needed to get fresh tyres, i'd have bet that if he'd preasured kubica long enough he'd have had 1/2 a chance, at leats the webber incident only cost him 1 place, great result for button, fantastic drive by kubica and finishing above alonso is so important for massa and sets up the battle between the two of them quite nicely.

interesting to see how no one seems particularly in awe of shumacher's reputation any more

mike gascoine commented on this last race and pointed out that if there's any form of adjuster that isn't opperated purely by the pit crew then it is illegal as it's against the regs to have either a driver or automatic system that adjusts the suspension geometry and by definition if you alter the ride height the geometry must alter purely because the ride height is altering (obviously this does not include the effects of fluids being used / lost or downforce pushing the car down)

edit: just to add thatw atching the qualification this morning when one of the redbulls came in i was sure i saw something move in the front suspension / car relationship before it went on the jacks, at the time i just thought " oh that's the height adjustment thingy working" never really considered at the time that it might be anything that may or may not be allowed since they were talking about it so much last race. real test of it will be at a bumpy circuit if the red bull is on the ground in qualifying then it should be ripping it's a**e out on the first lap unless it's got an onboard adjuster

don't be surprised if the first comercial flight takes place on April 12th, 2011. branson won't be able to resist making the first comercial space flight on the 50th aniversary of the first space flight if it's at all possible.

learned something new ( to me yesterday) was riding in a bradley and we got damaged so i popped out to repair it. whilst i was doing it the bloody driver decided to go for a jog and next thing an enemy jumped into a now almost fully repaired vehicle.

i was about to get some distance on him and try the launcher when i noticed the repair tool was now increasing his damage so i carried on, stopped and waited when the gun needed to cool down, and wound the vehicle "health" all the way to 0 at which point i got points for destroying it

f duct is a nice new inovation, double diffusers should have been banned for 2010 not 2011, there was no logical reason to retain them for a second season as the cars rear ends were all being redesigned for the new fuel regs and most of the teams had drawn up their original 2009 rears for single diffusers anyway and the rulling was made early enough in 2009. additionally they should have seen the starter access being a loophole and specified that the starter had to enter above the diffuser which would also have had the effect of lowering diffuser height.

somehow the FIA lost track of the fact that the 2009 regs were designed to reduce downforce, in particularly rear downforce and that the double diffuser meant that had not been achieved and as a result did nothing to correct it

one obvious difference between now and the last time we had refueling is the fact that the teams are forced to use both compounds. get rid of that and then see what happens if they can run either one and change them as often / little as they want. that way we may see differing approaches to how to win a race. sure bridgestone will need to provide more tyres on a given weekend but bernie could afford to sweeten the deal for them

if we had a stick shift then even with a clutch safety to protect the engine we'd still get people missing gearchanges and loosing time/ speed or missing apexes etc which would promote overtaking. the fact that engines wouldn't be damaged is neither here or there unless you're arguing that the only way to pass is for the car in front to breakdown

too early to tell yet, apart from anything else due to testing regs, new tech regs and a lot of new driver team combinations there was a large desire by almost everyone to make sure they saw the chequered flag. add in the fact that they are on a run of fly away races which means that the supply chain for replacement parts can be a nightmare and front wings etc begin to look like they're made from unobtanium and are as common as hen's teath (or if you're a new team hen dentists).

lets wait till this season's over and also discount the new teams when we're looking at the spread between fastest and slowest cars to make it a fiar comparison

if HRT manage to get one of their cars to the finish of the race they will have done a good job, i suspect they'll be happy if they just manage half way into the race.

has to be said though that you do have to wonder about the vetting proccess for the new teams with HRT appearing just in the nick of time and the USF1 situation yet companies with far more experience like prodrive and lola not getting an entry (i'm ignoring the stefan GP story as i'm sure there is more to come on that yet)

well i had an epic fail of truely biblical proportions yesterday

was playing as recon on the panama map on a server with friendly fire on and was tucked away nicely in the bushes / trees alongside the road, minding my own business, spotting and taking out the snipers on the top floors when i spotted the other team apparently having a union meeting with about 9 of them all standing together, making no attempt to move and presumably waiting for everyone to group together with the tanks etc for a movement in force.

ideal target for a mortar strike i thought, so i get the binoculars out, aim at them and get a lock on. got the confirmation message and sat back waiting for the fun to start.

hmm guess who hadn't noticed the mortar had achieved a lock on on a branch that was waving about just in front of me? pretty spectacular way of killing myself

+1 prestige has never done naything for me but if it lights your fire then go ahead.

given how long it takes between rounds it's not even a problem just having the standard custom slots as you usually have time to configure one for the next game, same with kill streak rewards, some maps suit differing rewards to others.

i felt quite sad the other week when i discovered the general belgrano's history. when the falkands war happened everything was an us and them situation but time allowes you to find out more

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Phoenix_(CL-46)

it just seemed so unfair for it to finish like that after surviving pearl harbour

of course i then started worrying why i felt more sad about the ship than the sailors lost on her

i seem to remember one of the major problems was drivers complaining that they were getting so disorientated that they couldn't find the pit entrance which really would have been an accident waiting to happen in a race.

anyone else read one of arthur c clarke's books where he comments on the future british and argentinian goverments frustrated efforts to foist the falkland islands and more importantly their inhabitants off on each other because they're such a pain in the ass ?
