if only they could agree a compramise, FIA to agree the rules need clarifying, mercedez / sxhumacher to agree that they had "mis interpreted" the spirit of the rules and the result to be declared as the order whe the safety car came into the pits, i.e.e alonso ahead of schumacher.

of course, too many ego's etc so this will rattle on and on and no one willl come out of it looking good

i never liked the solstice when i had to drive it but these days i must admit i actually enjoy doing the odd test with it, wouldn't dare do a race with all the roookies, apart from all the mistakes causing accidents they'd probably be faster than me

any of our german members (ok i could have phrased that better ) able to tell us how the german press are reporting the sudden reversal of fortunes for schumacher and rosberg since the car update? i'm wondering if it's not really being commented on and put down to one of theose weekends or if they feel the car's been altered to suit schumacher at rosberg's expense, if the later then how are they reacting to rosberg being compramised in this way?

nothing wrong with recon playing as snipers as long as it's done well and by just enough players. one of the best starts to a game of rush i've ever had was on the demo map (sorry i'm cr*p with names). 2 snipers myself as medic and an assault guy in our squad, snipers both class 36 settled on rock on sniper hill and got to work, assault guy dropped an ammo pack for them i dropped a medi kit, we both then dropped back to cover the snipers' left and right with me rushing forward to revive if they got hit. rest of team realised what was going on and concentrated on attacking the mcom stations whilst these 2 guys were like something out of holywood, 1 shot 1 kill continually, enemy couldn't establish any snipers of their own and realy struggled to even move from their spawn point.

we rolled up the first part of the map easily and although we never hit the same level of perfection the whole game was won in a similar fashion.

of course i've been in games when i've been the only non sniper with 15 snipers who didn't seem to realise that the defending team had unlimited tickets

i've seen a few sources now say that they think the reason the red bull sare so dominant, especially in qualifying is the fact that their double diffuser is compramised by their gearbox / rear suspension.

by moving everything as low as posible not only have they benefitted from a lower centre of gravity but also from a better airflow on the top of the car and through the rear wing. coupled with an underbody thats producing less downforce than their rivals, red bull consequently have a greater proportion of downforce coming from the top surfaces, and of course these surfaces are less critical to pitch changes and crucially are not affected the way underbody aero is by the ride height altering with a low fuel state.

to put it simply, the downforce they generate may not be as efficient or as much as the best of the double diffuser prioritised cars but it is more constant and more predictable.

they were saying in china that it's possible the driver's knee bit maybe a red herring and the mclaren system doesn't actually depend on the cockpit vent being blocked at all, in fact what may be happening is at a certain speed the air flow / preasure / speed in the duct builds up to a point where the air naturally prefers to travel down the full lenght to the rear wing rather than pass through the cockpit vent and the only reason the vent is actually in the cockpit is so mclaren had some measure of deniability by calling it a driver cooling system.

what is for certain is by designing the car from the start to have an F duct mclaren will have more options regarding it's operation / efficency, if the other teams' systems prove to have an advantage then mclaren can copy them but it will be very hard for other teams to produce any form of efficient system that passes through the access holes in their chassis if they want to emulate mclaren's sytem

is it me or do sunderland get faster every time?

reminds me of how in the late 70's teams moved away from "airboxes" and sacraficed the ram efect in return for a better airflow onto the rear wing

i was told by my politics lecturer 30 years ago that politics is like a circle, if you go far enough to the right and far enough to the left they meet and are the same.

i honestly can't make my mind up this time, traditionally anglesey has always supported it's sitting MP but when they step down it usually changes hands and has been liberal, conservative, plaid and labour in the last 40 years, given labours problems it's no guarentee they'll hang on to it so i feel i should make an effort to see juste xactly what each party is standing for this time.

what would have helped is to see someone, anyone really from any party yet despite anglesey having a population less than wrexham and everyone saying that the election is really close and every vote / seat counts, I've not seen a single party worker anywhere. closest i've come is almost hitting the plaid leader's car when he was tryijng to pull out in llangefni

interesting article in autosport about schumi, apart from the obvious of him being older and out of practice in a current F1 car there's also the problem of the merc having understeer when he's well known for liking (possibly even requiring) a "pointy" car, certainly in his his first year at ferrari in a car who's designer had a history of producing chasis with slight understeer he was not happy, and also his chassis was damaged in australia and despite being repaired as best as possible the damage which was underneath towards the rear is felt to have been allowing a bit of flex which may have been causing the lack of slow speed traction he was complaining about.

whilst his qualifying hasn't been great his race performances aren't that bad, first race 1 place behind rosberg, second race caught in T1 incident, pitted and continued with damaged car, third race retired after 10 laps due to loose wheel, fourth race struggled but as in third race team believe the chassis damage in race two was compramising performance.

we'll begin to know how how he's doing after the next race, merc are introducing a longer wheelbase to allow them to generate better front end downforce (though bridgestone are warning that it's easier to overload the internal air volume of the fronts now with them being narrower) and he'll have the undamaged test chassis so should have no traction issues, certainly if he's not competative with his team mate at monaco there will be a lot of questions being asked.

what's also interesting is that his ex team mates are all saying the same thing, namely that whilst he is untouchable in his ability to help develope an engine being remarkable sentsitive to the slightest change in the power delivery, he is not especially gifted at developing the car and had to rely on his team mates and test drivers to provide the feedback the engineers required about new parts etc. irving takes great delight in telling how schumacher discarded a new front wing as being no imporvement over the current one only for irving to prove it was substantially faster.

at benetton he had a pointy car which was fast, at ferrari he had a full test team who could drive huge distances ontheir own test track developing parts and who were chosen for their level of feedback. at both of these he had access to his teammates' setups and telemetry and the car was developed to suit him.

at merc in 2010 he has limited test milage and equal status with a teamate who is actually quite comfortable with a car that has slight understeer. unless merc produce a car that's adaptable enough to accomadate both driving styles, one driver or the other is going to be compramised and unless the next update fundementally alters the cars charectoristics, that driver that is going to be schumacher.

timo to be honest you've really got to be desperate for SR (or in the grand prix masters) to go anywhere near an official race in week 13. do a fun race, enjoy that feeling of not giving a s**t and then realise why the SR system makes such a huge difference to the regular season races

i'm pretty sure in uk law that by paying the chap that "found" the phone, the bloke from gizmodo would be guilty of dealing in stolen goods.

and of course we don't know for certain if the phone was lost and found or just stolen from a drunk guys jacket.

having said that apple are being incredably heavy handed over it and i can't help thinking that they are turning into another heavy handed big corporation much like the microsoft that they used to ridicule. additionally the one thing you should never do in business is pick a fight with journalists, if this blows up into a major issue then there could be a backlash against apple by the media.

surely the better way of dealing with it would have been a nice unofficial agreement for gizmodo to hand it back, keep quiet and then let them have the exclusive first test of the final product at it's launch. afterall apple were lucky, imagine if it had been sold to a rival company or a company that does replica's in china

well i have to say that at the moment i hate the V8 s handling, hate it's brakes and it's weight and can't put 3 slow laps together without hitting something ( the only things i havent hit yet are the apexes ) but despite all this i love the car

(should point out the brake issue is just due to adjusting from single seaters and the handling will get there as i'm always slow getting a first baseline setup i like )

i'm sure i read a few years ago that phillip morris actually paid (or did at the time) for the whole of the ferrari's skin and then the other advertisers paid them instead of ferrari. that way they had total control over how much other companies infringed on their corporate look of red with a white pannel at the top and ferrari had the security of knowing exactly what their revenue from sponsorship would be.

it was mentioned that it may not have been ferrari's brightest deal as it was rumoured phillip morris actually earned more revenue from the other sponsors than they paid ferrari for the whole.

re the marlboro energy drink idea, didn't west propose selling models of F1 driver's helmets a few years ago, the fast that the west name would be prominent in adverts and happened to be the brand of their cigarettes would be of course coincidental

autosport about 2 weeks before the first gp of the year in the little side column in the news section

EDIT: not sure i actually believe it myself either but on the other hand in australia button did say he had no choice but to pit so early as his inters were shot. if i had to try and reason it i'd guess it was whilst button was trying to get to grips with the ins and outs of setting the mclaren up for his driving style

wow a nice well thought out post and a nice well thought out answer, congratulations to both of you (and yes i am being serious )

redstar the beauty of LFS is it's development team, they may be slow but it's their baby and, like the rfactor mods which are sitting top of simracing tonight's top sim car list, the devs work to get everything as perfect as they can, not just to a "good enough" standard. it may be frustrating when you see other games being changed, updated, replaced etc but like a hand built car, it's a labour of love, the superficial quality may not match some mass produced machines but the underlying quality is very high indeed.

re graphics, if you run with all the graphics options on, i'm with tris, it looks far better than most sims / games and when i last used LFS, the hi res mods made it as good as a lot of the bling over content titles. also high quality graphics have to come at either a minimum system spec price or a cutting back in other areas price, LFS is far easier on a system than for example iracing, in iracing i get a frame rate of 50 to 60, in LFS apart from the start when it falls to 90 ish, i see numbers which to be honest are stupidly high.

funny i'm really looking forward to this update, not sure why possibly just because i'm finally beginning to feel fit enough to consider doing races.

re ghost cars, should have added that because most US circuits use the "working over the pit wall" type of pit lane there wasn't the option for iracing to follow LFS, netkar, rfactor etc and have cars spawn in a pit garage. imagine what LFS would be like if people spawned in the pit lane rather than in the garages, it's bad enough now when you get people who don't look before pulling out.

if everyone in iracing spawned in the pit garages then, apart from circuits like brands etc, it would be a bloody long drive from the paddock to get onto the track, so rather than have a split system with some circuits spawning in garages and others in the actual pit boxes, they took the decision for us all to be in the pit boxes and as such ghost cars are probably needed. however as i said, i would be interested to see the results if there was a hosted option to do away with the ghost cars.

main problem in the pits without ghost cars would be if you were attempting to enter / leave your pit box and another car spawned in your path at last second. also american pit boxes appear to have less space between them that what eyropeans are used to seeing and without a crew chief to warn you i could see a lot of messy accidents. maybe the ideal would be to allow hosted sessions to switch the ghost car off and see how well it worked.

Quote from Greboth : Over the race distance though, with Button being better on his tyres then I think Button is probably the quickest.

as you said hamilton has for one reason or another had to hammer his tyres getting past people, it'll be interesting to see what happens if he ever gets a clear run and doesn't cock it up, as in testing bridgestone admitted that, whilst not wanting to mention names, they were surprised by the fact that the mclaren driver that was hardest on tyres was not the one they expected

+1 didn't have chance top see it but to ITV for such a long program, don't normally see that sort of coverage of a motorsport event on any other mainstream tv company's channel unless its a rain delayed race on sky.

what a complete f*ck up, though i can understand why they've pulled back, plenty of cases of companies / products who've created a demand they couldn't match and by the time they could the delays had wrecked their reputation.
