Quote from anttt69 :Been keeping an eye on this game. I read that it was a bad port to PC blah, blah, blah. Have things changed? New patches improved anything?

sure you're not getting confused with the row about MW2 on the pc?

Quote from BlueFlame :Considering how handy Renault were without the f-duct, this could be an interesting turn of events!

if they manage to make it work at it's first event i'll be seriously impressed, every other team has had to tweak it for a race or two and with the exception of sauber, who are on their second version of it, non of them seem to have got the same benefit out of it as mclaren has.

this is where the testing ban really affects things, just like mclaren trying to introduce their blown diffuser, track time is needed to correlate / replicate the CFD / wind tunnel results. whilst it could result in a car having an advantage that the other teams are unable to relicate it does mean that inovation is rewarded for a while and also that different cars have different strengths.

talking of F ducts can anyone work out just why exactly mercedes is apparently desperate to make their's the most complicated aerodynamic solution since concorde? air intakes in front wing assembly area, fed through rear wing uprights and then through the rear wing to the outlets in the middle? seems to be a lot of convoluted passages to flow the air through given the beauty of the f duct on the mclaren was it's simplicity

look at it this way, the faster you go, the sooner the race is over so it can cool down again

might be worth giving your oil company a call tris, most of them have someone who can advise on motorsports use.

an other advantage of a "dry" sump is that it's a lot less susceptable to surge as the oil is forced from side to side / front to rear by cornering forces etc.

in a normal "wet" sump there's a danger the oil pickup will at ttimes be out of the oil resulting in a drop in oil preasure / feed, whilst this can be limited with sump baffling a "dry" sump eliminates this by only having a scavanger pump to fill the external tank which which then has it's feed pump to supply the engine. in effect it's the same as some fuel injected cars that have a fuel accumulator in the system to prevent the fuel pump running dry under cornering etc when the fuel level is low.

also in a "dry" sump the oil capacity can be a lot higher than a "wet" system which can be important for endurance events or for engines that have a high oil consumpion, plus this larger oil quantity allows for better control of oil temperature and the fact that the oil system is seprated from the engine allows easier instillation of filters / pumps/ coolers etc.

the setup screen varies from car to car, if you see the one for the indy car it's very comprehensive, especially on the aero side which has far more parameters then LFS.

re the feedback, i sort of know what you mean but after running iracing for a while and altering my profiler etc i was suprised to find how dead LFS felt when i came back to it recently so i suspect both have their sweet spots in settings. also for some reason a lot of the setups for the mazda seem to be designed (either deliberately or accidently) to reduce the amount of feel you get through the wheel. where as the solstice appears to have the fabled feather light US power steering that uk mags moaned about for years and years.

as i've said before and will in the future, to me both sims complement each other both in their aims and in their communities, both have good points and members, both have bad points and members, in particular you will probably see less deliberate bad driving on iracing but conversely the iracing forum makes some of the wildest threads here look like a love in.

Quote from MijnWraak :xD the only competition I had randomly quit on lap 8 while he was gaining on me

lol, similar thing happened to me in a hosted multiclass race just before the lotus had it's limiter brought back.

before the race , 33 laps at laguna, everyone was moaning about the limiter syaing that they didn't want it and there was no problem driving carefully to ensure you didn't vlow the engine.

by 15 laps in the only other car left was one poor sod who'd was in the skippy after being the only driver that didn't pick the lotus. then he quit so i did a couple of laps and then quit

remember the fact the scirocco doesn't behave properly is the reason why the new tyre model started developement, if they hadn't landed the VW then they wouldn't have realised just how off the current tyre model is off and we wouldn't be looking forward to what is probably going to be a major advance.

if iracing with their resources find creating an accurate tyre model very time consuming, then i'm sure scawen finds it hard going as well, if the people who complain about the delay in LFS would all like to contribute the same amount as the average iracing subscriber does over just twelve months, in subs and content, to help fund scawen's research then i'm sure he'd appreciate it

one thing is guarented, no matter how long it takes, when it's done it will be done to a good standard. in the mean time stop bleating on about how LFS is dying and how the delay puts off new users, the one thing that more than anything else will put people off and give the impression that LFS is dead is seeing a huge thread full of people complaining that nothing is done as the casual browser won't be bothered to look deaper and appreciate how things are done by the devs.

oh and before anyone accuses me of being an LFS fanboy, take a look at my stats and how little i use LFS these days, i spend most of my time on iracing but i still can appreciate how good LFS is, in fact maybe it's because i use iracing i appreciate, more than a lot of the complainers, just how much of a bargain LFS is and how good a job the devs have done with it and no doubt will continue to do in the future with it in return for very little financial outlay by it's users.

i suspect the reason cars in iracing (some more than others) respond strangely or react well to strange setups is the same reason why scanwen decided he needed to produce the new tyre model before releasing the scirocco, namely that when real life suspension design and setups are fed into the tyre model it exposes the limitations of the model, i seem to recall that scanwen stated that the reason why he had held back the VW was because the faults were exposed when they had a real car to compare the results against

Quote from Forbin :FYI, the F-14 is more an interceptor, not really a (dog)fighter like most of the others (F-15, F-16, F/A-18, F-22).

yeah i know that, just meant it would be interesting to hear his take on the whole F35 scenario, pity they never green lighted the "bombcat" version of the tomcat, could have kept the F14 in service a lot longer.

thankfully with the amount of computer controlled slats, flaps etc available today the military have moved away from swing wings for fighters, nothing like seeing a planes wings swing into a forward position to give the game away that he's getting short of manuvering energy.

of course for low level high speed penetration they still have a lot going for them with good low speed lift when swept forward and a high wingloading when swept back giving a smooth, stable ride at low level

ironic really that for less than what the cost of silent hornets they could have produced a marinised version of the EF2000 and if the decision had been taken early enough all the salt resistent materials could have been designed into all varients of the EF2000 from the start which would have left the RAF and the RN with a standardised fighter

having said that, in the mid 90's the RAF were offered a nice deal on secondhand low milage F15Cs at a price which would have meant a squadron for the eventual price of 1 EF2000

the JSF is a classic case of what happens when you design an airframe to be adaptable to differing specifications for such different requirements that there has to be a large amount of over specification of the base airframe in any varient and at the same time a large amount of derrivative specific components, all of which end up costing as much (if not more) than if two entirely seperate machines had been designed.

the US should have known better after the idea of a single cheap(er) fighter plane resulted in the USAF adopting one proposal that became the F16 and the US navy adopted the other which became the F18 and they were fairly similar in their requirements, far closer than the need for a V/STOl and a conventional jet in the same airframe

Quote from Mackie The Staggie :

The rev limiter should be optional. Choose to use the rev limiter and sacrifice some power from the engine but safe in the knowledge of an engine that's not going to blow (unless you shift from 5th to 1st) Or chose to disable the rev limiter and use the full grunt of that engine, but run the risk of having a grey cloud follow you at some stage.

thank you staggie, i've got tired of posting that on iracing. having said that it appears after a practice session that no auto clutch / blip and H shifter is still the fastest way to go

personally i feel it's not a bad call as it's there on the real car, no matter if it makes it easier or not, iracing push the realism factor so it has to be there

there's space for all sims providing they're competent (and even some incompetent ones) as they all reward different people with differing tastes / needs.

iracing has real life tracks / cars and bangs out updates every 13 weeks and tweaks / fixes in between, usually good, occasionally flawed but you pay for that level of progression. unless you pay for a hosted session, you have to go with what series / races iracing want you to race but driving standards are normally good due to the licencing system

rfactor has lots of third party content providing an almost limitless supply of real life and fictional cars and tracks, none of which costs after the original sim, some good, some bad. lots of series / races but can be a pain to ensure you have the right content for the race you want and be allowed to join a series, driving standards depend on third parties enforcing rules

LFS has mostly fictional content but that content feels good with consistent quality and until S3 is released any new content / updates comes at no extra cost but the release of any updates is limited and. lots of servers available at any time but frequently most are offering the same car / track combos with other content hardly being used. driving standards depend on third parties.

to compare sims is like comparing soccer, rugby league and rugby union. they're all ball sports, all have their fans and the vast majority of those fans enjoy more than one ball sport, there's only a few fans who insist that any ball sport apart from their prefered sport is the work of the devil

personally i love iracing but i also love LFS and in an ideal world when my health / time allowed, i'd do my serious racing on iracing and fun driving on LFS whilst using rfactor for single player driving of cars / tracks that aren't available elsewhere.

P.S. just because i've concentrated on these 3 (as they're PC sims and the ones that usually end up in this sim's better than that sim threads) doesn't mean i've any less regard for forza 3, GT5, GTR etc

Quote from justasimfan :Well this is my first actual post here as i just registered. I played lfs for years on my brothers sim riq and i believe as far as physics and overal polish is among the best sims out there.I don't know what exactly makes it so special but the tyre feeling feels simply right. If it wasn't as good as it is well i don't think i would been spending my time in these forums.

Yet the last few years truth to be told there was no new content released were the competitor simulations have started to evolve.
I still think that i-racing needs more normal tracks and is missing real normal cars,Gtr evo/on may start to look a bit dated yet it features a huge amount of content and some great ai and weather effects.
But my least favourite sim when released,Rfactor has become the game now i and my brother spend most time racing. After rfactor got the real feel update the rest was history as a lot of talented modders brought nurburing,le mans, magny course, monza, lienz, spa, isle of man, mount panorama, paris, eastern creek, oran park, pikes peak, shangai, singapure, pau,
fuji, montreal, barcelona and a ton of other great tracks/mountain roads(like the upcoming targa florio-a convertion from gpl). The same applies to cars as there are many exellent real normal cars/car packs released.

For God's sake i don't mention all the above to bash lfs,i mentioned all that because ISI used the Strengh,Ingenuity and talent of sim gamers/users by giving them the ability to make all the above possible.
In the lfs community there are some incredibly talented people and the
proof of that is the mods found in LFSMODS.There are some amazing car models to be found there complete with some incredible interiors. There are some very talented modelers and some very talented textures in the lfs community.IF the developers could give the users more freedom and power to create end user content lfs could become the best sim of all time.As things are to add a user made car you have to overwrite the files of the original cars and also the handling characteristics are limited by the handling characteristics of the car being overwritten.IF the developers were open to the idea of adding user content that was handled intependently from the main cars and having each cars their own completely unique configuration parameters....
The same things can be said about tracks as their format is completely lock at the moment...

As i said before i didn't post to bash lfs or any of the developers. For God's shake its an astonishing game for what it is and to be created by just 3 people it makes it even an even more incredible feet.

The reason i posted is that i feel its a pitty when so many talented people want to help make lfs an even better game than it is ,that they are not given the chance. I can only imagine if the developers opened the car/track format what could be archived from content side while they could allocate their time to improve physics, damage, sounds, weather effects and generally not have to worry about end user content...

That my 2 cent worth of thoughts and i wish if any of the devs actually read this ,at least please give it a thought or 2...

Have a nice racing

nice post, especially for a first post

Quote from Becky Rose :I have been following this for a while, I think it's marvellous!

I hope that in 10 years or so we'll be seeing orbital flights, and maybe, just maybe, before my death there will be the first deep space passenger flights - maybe to the moon or some such.

When I first descovered this I was astounded that it was going to happen in my own lifetime, and from this beginning who knows how fast the technology will develop.

+1 though i thought the same when i was just 6 when they landed on the moon and it's taken a while to get to this stage

Quote from Becky Rose :It's incredible, I love it, and I can't afford it.

but if you really want it you'll find a way, some way, any way to raise the cash, after all who needs a house ?

i usually find the mazda pretty easy to catch slides in. as long as you react fairly quickly you can either get it back in line or hold a long slide, it's just the initial correction to stop it developing into a spin that's got to be done quickly

Quote from spanks :Crapppppp

My membership expires tomorrow.

I don't mind paying for iracing...I just hate forking over the lump sum.

thats why i jumped at the offer on 12 month subs in (i think) june. get it out of the way then i won't miss it and at least the $30 credit will make feel good when i want to buy new content.

P.S. after battling with health etc i finally did a race yesterday for the first time in 9 months week 13 mixed martial, got talked into it by a bunch of aussies, knew i was going to be slow but kept nose fairly clean and finished 9th out of 12 after loosing 2 spots on last lap

Quote from DevilDare :I cant bring myself to watch it...

The "show" is so badly presented it makes ISR look professional. The guy is so awkward and looks like he has no interest at all....

to be fair if you watch the early ISR programs darin and shaun look like they're being held hostage and being forced to present the show at gun point. and some of the proffesional presenters on the smaller TV channels aren't much better.

it's a pity iracing didn't just get ISR to host the show for them or get a proper presenter in rather than doing it from within their own staff. at the very least they should get someone with jessica's "atributes" to take your mind off the wooden performances

what i find interesting is how small the gap between the two HRT cars is, if as stated / thought by a lot of people (myself included) yamamoto is only there because of his sponsorship money rather than outright speed it either means that senna isn't that quick a driver either or the HRT is really easy to drive at its (low) limits or yamamoto is better than he's given credit for.
