I feel the same way about the physics, but I'm surprised you can control the car with 900 degrees. I had to reduce it to 400, and still have a weird dead feeling on-center. It's like the force feedback kicks in about 20 degrees off-center so it feels like the steering wheel has a lot of freeplay. It's not really a deadzone because the car still responds. It's just the FF. It's not really too bothersome except on straights.

Quote from senn :So is there a verdict from those who have played with a wheel, given that it feels a bit average ffb/handling wise, is it still worth the cash because it's a fun game anyway?
Or should i wait until it's available 2nd hand for $40AUD

Quote from Crommi :Try demo, it seems to be pretty much love/hate with this game. If you can get over the fact that driving physics are quite not up to sim-standards, it can be a lot of fun.

+1 Try the demo. http://www.nfsunlimited.net/shift/demo

Quote from Klutch :13b or 13bt?

**** i love your FC, White on black rims, perfect
good job on getting rid of the retarded white interior

rotor power ftw

Thanks, it's N/A. No turbo for me.

Quote from R34king :Clean Fc dude nice job with the interior

thanks

Quote from ACCAkut :header to mufflers sounds like N/A, no turbo in between

Can't you put a header on a turbo car? I've never owned a turbo car (or one with a piston-engine). I really don't know.

Quote from Klutch :blah, shoulda picked up on that.

13b n\a's are terrible engines without any sort of porting

No they aren't. They are great fun and more reliable/less complicated than turbos (yes I'm biased :nod. A bit down on power, yes but still fun.
I don't like turbos in general. I just don't like the noise.

I just drove the Cayman at Spa, at it was great! Much smoother fps than some of the other tracks. With it fresh in my mind, I have a couple more thoughts then I'll shut up. I think Shift (in pro mode w/assists off) is a good entry-level "sim" and a good transition from arcade races (like previous NFS) to more simulation type games (GT, LFS). It requires careful throttle control, braking and steering, but not at the level of precision.

I tweaked my control settings since my previous post, here they are now:

Logitech Profiler:

It seems SMS/EA assumed everyone uses the deafult settings here. I bumped up the steering rotation (default is 200:really and added the centering spring. I may try it at default just to see how it feels.

In-Game, (using G25 seperate pedals preset):
Steering Deadzone - 0
Accelerator Deadzone - 0
Brake Deadzone - 0
Steering Sensitivity - 50
Acceleration Sensitivity - 50
Braking Sensitivity - 50
Speed Steering Sensitivity - 0
Wheel Lock - 100
FF Strength - 10

This won't make it feel like LFS obviously, but it's good enough for the pseudo-sim that SHIFT is. Anyway, i'm having a lot of fun with it. I hope they release a patch soon for you guys having problems. I don't know why I don't. Try the demo. I heard it actually runs better with no crashing.

One more thing. How are you guys taking screen shots? Just the print-screen key? When I try to take a snapshot, it tries to connect to EA nation.

For those that don't know, the PC demo is out, so try it before you make any conclusions. Some love it, some hate it. Just remember it's not really a sim (though much more so than previous NFS games).

I bought it (for PC) and I seem to be one of the lucky few with out crashing problems. It runs a little slower than expected sometimes, but certainly not unplayable, and that should improve with ATI driver updates and/or a patch.

It took a while to get my G25 set up, messing with in game settings and profiler. I have the profiler settings at default except steering degrees (540, probably should lower it), and centering spring on 70% It feels ok now, but there is a big on-center force feedback deadzone. I turned on the centering spring to help that a bit so it doesn't just feel like free-play.
I wonder if they assume the default settings for the g25? They obviously did no testing at 900*.

Over all I enjoy it. I didn't have any delusions about it being a real sim. The physics are about what I expected. The biggest issue I have is with the force feedback. LFS has spoiled us with it's amazing feedback so everything else feels numb and inaccurate. Plus, that deadzone is annoying.

Note to PC users/tweakers: the control files are just easily editable xml docs, with a lot of parameters not listed in-game. I didn't want to mess with it, but I'm sure someone here would be able to mess with it.

I have tons of pics, but I'll just show two.

K&N intake/filter with custom air box
Racing Beat springs
KYB AGX shocks
Energy Suspension bushings (installation=:banghead
Dunlop SP SPORT MAXX tires (215/45/17)
Hawk HPS brake pads
full custom exhaust (header to mufflers, no catalytic converter) was on the car when I bought it, would not have been my first choice.
It's far too loud around town, but great fun at high rpm on back roads.
painted wheels
maintenance + restoration stuff.

There are a couple gauges on the a-piller. (oil temp and water temp)
Momo Steering wheel
Momo shift knob
short shifter to be installed when it arrives in a week or two.

I've actually done a lot to the interior. It's mostly stock now, but when I got it it was all white and black.

Creative and interesting, but not my style. I was able to paint a few parts, others I had to replace.

It's a lot of fun to drive. The handling/steering is excellent and it revs so easily (8000 silky smooth rpm woohoo) . I <3 rotary. However, no torque+linear power band = deceptively slow. (Not that it's actually fast, but it is faster than it feels. ) I'd like to get it to a track sometime. Maybe next year.

I wish LFS had a rotary car...

I'm buying it. I'm a bit of a nfs fanboy, having bought nearly every one since nfs II - the real NFSII from 1997. It's kind of a yearly tradition for me now, but shift looks great. Though it seems more like GTR than nfs. (Technically it is, I guess)

Quote from logitekg25 :i wa just about to give an example of a not free demo, but all i could think of is lfs

mmm...deja vu. This is the Belgian 2009 thread, correct?

Go Fisicella and Force India! Boo KERS. :irked:
I was hoping to see a BMW and/or a Toyota on the podium.
Great race anyway.

re 2008: I stopped caring about that incident when Hamilton won the championship. He obviously would still have won had he not been penalized. I doesn't matter anymore. /rant

Quote from MadCat360 :Try playing with the linearity setting. That might take the dartiness out.

Ultra, I'd describe Grid as "approximate realism". It's got oversteer and understeer and locking brakes and all that basic stuff, but it's bundled into an easy to grasp package. Like a sandwich. Grid is a sandwich.

exactly.

Quote from MadCat360 :And I'm pretty sure the secret to enjoying any game is to not take it too seriously... but that's me.

True, but I think us sim-racers take LFS (and other sims) relatively seriously. So we write off games like Grid just because the physics aren't realistic. I only downloaded the demo to see the graphics. I was surprised to discover it was actually pretty fun, so I bought it.

Quote from JJ72 :Rather the opposite to me, I can use G25 for NFS underground 2 and TDU, but not for GRID.

It feels like if I steer a little it doesn't want to turn, but if I steer a bit more it turns rather suddenly, my natural instinct will be to counter steer a bit, but then the car shot into the opposite direction as if there's no momentum.

I don't see where the realistic edge is TBH, not in the tire grip, not in the way it under/oversteers, not in the traction behavior (hate the exagarrated power oversteer at slow speed.)

I tried it with keyboard and it was a lot better (meaning I can actually control the car in a straight line), however it doesn't want to accelerate if I even touch the steering a little bit.

I just played grid today for the first time in a while and I see what you mean about the steering. It took a few laps to get used to (again). Though you've made me want to try the keyboard again.

As for the realism, I mean compared to games like NFS. In Grid you have to brake for corners, you have to be careful (sort of, sometimes) to not lock the brakes, and it's not too hard to spin out, so some care is needed on the throttle in some corners. Take someone who has only ever played NFS or whatever and have them try Grid. I'm they would find it more difficult. To me it seems like it's trying to "feel" real, but it's too soft and not sensitive enough.

I'm not trying to defend Grid's physics, just clarifying my opinion. On a scale of 1 to 10 of realism, with LFS 10 and NFS 1, I'd say Grid is probably a 2 or 3. That's all I'm saying.

The "secret" (if there is one) to enjoying a game like Grid is to not take it too seriously. It's just a game, like Halo, COD4, etc. Racing/driving sims like LFS are a different category.

I actually use my G25, but I set it to about 200 degrees and don't use the clutch. Grid is arcadey, but it has a bit of a realistic edge to it. I normally use the keyboard for arcade racers (NFS), but I find Grid is "real" enough to be fun with a wheel. (I'm expecting NFS:Shift to be about the same, in spite of what they claim. :rolleyes

I like Grid. Sure it's unrealistic, but it's still a fun arcade racer. I expect NFS Shift () to be about the same experience, but a bit more realistic (I hope). If I want to play a fun game with cars and racing, I play NFS or Grid (etc) If I want to be serious and actually drive, I play LFS (or gt5p).

This might be a good thread for new members to read through just to see what the forum is like. It's got everything from random nonsense to technical discussions (sort of i guess) to back and forth bickering. All it needs is a highly technical discussion of physics, a drifting argument, and lots of whining about lack of news, and I think this thread would be a nice overview of the "General LFS Discussion" forum.

...or maybe not.
