Just to notify. Even I made this thread, I don't have a strong opinion about this subject, I just wanted to have discussion outside the test patch forum as it was not the place for it.
While we are at it now, why not implement the false start system to pit stops?
And if LFS is capable to understand pit spots (the fact that car is in a pit stop and has properly stopped there) I could see it that formation laps could be possible to do without causing too much stuff to be overwritten. Would be nice for leagues, if there was a league that wanted to do so. No we are using the lag start method before the actual race just to make sure all is ok. With formation laps this could be avoided.
What are you then? Calling someone nazi will certainly make you look like a total idiot
In that case the car has no driver. Do you think it would be possible at all in real life to have a car in the start line 5 secs before green lights while the driver is masturbating/taking a nap behind the pit area?
hero complex? nope. just having a laugh at you guys. And the term Nazi's been so overused on other causes that it hardly means anything more than **** anymore.
and no, i dont think it's possible, but then again I don't care. Simulation or not at the end of the day its a game, something we do for fun. Most of us just want to RACE and skip the unneccisary preliminary bullshit.
the fact that LFS is so easy to play online makes it scream that it was made for pickup races. leagues are made easier by this, but are still a byproduct.
I said "suffering hero complex", and it wasn't a question.
Not surprized, tiny immature minds are often amused at the expense of others.
So not only do you know what people do in their spare time, you also know how the global community at large feels about sensitive terms. That's incredible as well; perhaps you should try using your powers to look like something other than a complete tool?
(emphasis in quote added to aid your understanding of my point) ... Yet again, you know what everyone thinks/does. Truly gifted! The only problem with your premonition is, that if this was true - this thread wouldn't exist. I also presume you meant "unnecessary", since what you typed was relatively similar.
I find it eerily ironic that you storm into the thread posting utter nonsense about anti-americanism, and then proceed to act in a fashion which would propagate the stereotypical view of Americans. Having an opinion is one thing; acting like a jackass about it just makes you look... Well, I'll let you figure it out I guess.
When did you become a qualified psychologist? And over the net no less!
What's wrong with finding an opposing viewpoint amusing? I also find it amusing that people think Creation and Evolution are mutually exclusive.
Actually, I was refering to the state of things here in america with that comment, and neglected to proofread the post. Here I have a choice of whether to bite the bullet and appologize, simply sluff off the typo, or point to a more educated person on the topic. If it's ok for Mel Brooks, a Jewish comedian/movie director to have a laugh at both Hitler and the Nazi party, it's fine for me. I beleive in equality, and i also believe that the best way to remove fear from something is to laugh at it till it's not scary any more. If you want I could give you a list of other things that get the laugh treatment.
As for the last quote, I've pulled this from the "silent majority" observation from watchign people around me. The majority of people don't speak up and according to statistics, don't agree with the loud-mouths. Just because most of the people HERE are bitching about not liking the starts doesnt mean that the majority of teh active players arent perfectly happy with it.
edit: As for the anti-american stuff, I got my answer from someone and dropped it.
There are always few things which give the impression of ... an unpleasent person to me. Words like moan, bitch, whining and rediculous are words that always carry negative emphasis and should not be used without actually meaning it. Or used at all.
This thread is about very small thing; the hand brake, and what people consider a proper way to implmement it realistically. If you have a problem with some of the views, comment the views, not the persons. And if you can't make a single post without moaning, bitching and naziing you might as well do something else. One part of conversation is to respect other peoples' views, which you seem to be totally incapable of.
For me the way the handbrake is fully automatic and robot-driven is just an arcade feature of a small thing that could be done better and it won't cause havoc and mass destruction, even on demo servers. There has been good suggestion made about and constructive discussion and opinions heard. If the devs see it worth implementing - all good. But for the christs sake it is not bitching or the realism nazis complaining about stupid useless features...
And stop generalizing. You have no such statistics, you just made all up...
All I can hope that this thread has served some purpose, views pro and against are discussed and I hope it all turns the way we wanted
So you know what the silent people are thinking? May I see your statistics that you used for this analysis, and perhaps some of the calculations and normalising done on them? I'd love to see exactly how many of these silent members don't agree with the 'loud mouths', and as you claim to have that data I can't wait to see it. A jpg attachement will be fine, but something like a powerpoint presentation would be great.
Edit: If you can't do this, or in fact completely made up the fact that you have ANY statistics, then I assume you will voluntarily never post in any discussion about realistic controls/features ever again.
The Problem I have at starts is with LAG as with a full grid at present on Version (W) sometimes I have to select 2nd gear 3 or 4 times before it will engage losing me valuble time on the starts and I sometimes get swamped by the cars behind me - this is all due to LAG and slow frame rate.
Now Bring this forward to the new patch (W9 or W10) with false starts If I have to select 1st gear or disingage handbrake to launch the car off the line and the above scenario happens then i'm static on the line with the likely hood of causing a mass pile up not being my fault just a problem generated by LAG and with 28 cars starting the problem becomes alot worse than it is now.
Tristan, assumptions are bad. And you would assume incorrectly.
As for actually quantifying a "silent majority" it's very difficult, as a large portion of that majority probably doesn't even visit the forum. I'm working on this however.
Okay, so your quantifying the thoughts of the LFS players who don't say anything, don't visit the forum, and therefore don't even know of this discussion. I bet they have STRONG opinions of something they don't know about (the patch or this thread).
Or are you 'working on this' by making everyone (EVERYONE) visit this forum and post
Probably Choke as it only happens during this very busy scenario at the start of races the rest of the race I have no Lag problems It's just inputs at the start seem very blocky and slow.
100 yards down the track it seems to sort itself out, but my concern is I can't be the only person that encounters this Scenario.
The new patches may cause problems to some users and this could become a spoiler to alot of races
If you have this happening to 4 or 5 cars it's going to be carnage time until we all upgrade our PC's
no, smart ass, i'm currently quantifying what portion of the community is silent (ie, not spoken for)
and can run a public server based poll later. as soon as i've posted some basic calculations i'm going to bed. It's almost 8 am, which starting to get pretty late for someone workig 3rd shift.
17,002 members total registered to the LFS forum (that's demo users that have signed up for the forum, and Liscence holders) as of 7:28 Am GMT+5 on 4/20/07
649 Most Users Ever Online
now for the sake of arguement, whch this is, let's define the viewers per hour of the forum as the maximum on record. so for a day that's 649*24, under the assumption the nobody visits the forum more than once per day (15096), but we do know it to be a fact that people DO visit more than once a day on average, cutting the number of unique users per day drasticly. For simple normalization of traffic, lets average the peak and lowest traffic hours, weighting more toward the peak hours (for this multiplied the number of assumed unique users per day by .7 to argue that the forum is fairly busy most fo the day, LFS is world wide after all) and came up with 10567 (rounded down by .2 since we all know nobody is 2/10 of a user around here even though some treat demo users like that.)
now.... lets see how often people in this thread alone check the forum so i can figure out how often the loud ones come on. as the loudest of the loud, i've used Cue-Ball as the high value, and have used 1 as the low for the average (keep in mind that this is all on the fly, and if i had access to ALL of the site statistics would probably result in an even smaller portion of the community being vocal) Cueball visited at least 11 times on the 17th of this month so the unweighted average forum user, based on a quick and dirty calculation vists the forum 6 times a day. Let us divide our previous number of assumed unique users per day by this number, shll we? (10567/6 = 1761.166666 (you get the point on that one the six just goes on and on) which for the sake of sticking with whole users is rounded to 1761)
about 10.35% of TOTAL LFs users, admittedly nto yet accounting for the players who have since lost interest or for one reason or another decided to just not come back. assuming that half these people arent even around anymore that puts the vocal members of the community at just under 21%.
the Vocal Minority.
now, the question is about how to go about the survey, which i obviously DO want to undertake. Using the statistics right off of the front page would be far to easy to make say what i want to say, and frankly i'd like to be as objective as possible.
edit: right, now it's time for me to get to bed, bloody nackered. anyone care to assist with the survey? Should it be a general cross section of racers online? Or should i ask them specificly if they use the forum or not? I think a general cross section limited to W9/10 servers would be most accurate, as they have experienced the new start system, and may have formed an objective oppinion about it
ON the STCC TBO server last night there were many people making dodgy starts (ie getting off the line) but i don't think there where people who could not change up - i guess it's hard to tell as it might have been down to the computers they were using or the line they were on
we've got a guy in ZWR how was only i think on 10fps at the start (old spec machine) not handling the physics great, but he had no issues changing gears
I was having this problem with Conedodgers1 - 22 cars on the start line and I am this week upgrading Graphics card as at present I have a Dell with integrated Graphics Getting 10fps at the starts but normally 35 - 40fps during races.
But with this new patch and the starts you will only need 4 or 5 racers with connections that struggle with 28 cars to encounter big problems on the starts.
So it's off to the shops this weekend to pickup a new card because I do not feel confident with my setup at present.
Make sure you max out your LOD reduction and see if that helps, as well. The cars will look like bricks on the starting line, but things should be much smoother.
I don't recall saying I was a qualified psychologist. However, humans are consistently predictable enough that certain types of behaviour speak for themselves.
Nothing. However, you didn't say you were laughing at viewpoints. Rather you were laughing at "us guys" - with the intimation that we are foolish by virtue of this thread/discussion.
I 100% agree with you on this. In my opinion, the fact that both can & do coexist is dreadfully obvious - but that's a whole other topic that doesn't belong in this thread.
I appreciate that you've toned down the bitterness at least a bit, but the fact remains that some of the active members here were having a perfectly civil and valid discussion, which you disturbed with your shinanigans for no good reason.
Quite frankly, I'm not concerned with what the "silent majority" thinks about this topic. If LFS listened to the larger "silent majority" before it got off the ground, we would not have LFS but NFS. You see, LFS is a niche product. As such, popular opinion is a moot point because it's not a mainstream product.
