whoa, that machine is a beast, 8Gb of RAM 8800GT in SLI, but, i would rather get 2 8800 GTXs in SLI, instead of that CPU Cooler, a Thermalright Ultra 120

After working a heck of a lot of overtime during the xmas period I feel I can afford to splash out a bit on building myself a new comp. My current one is starting to feel its age, stuck in the AMD socket A days and just can't quite keep a steady frame rate in LFS.

Doesn't have to be from eBuyer, just used them to make it easier.

The things I'm not sure about are the RAM and HDD. On the RAM I was a bit confused on the specs i.e 4200, 6400 (wasn't sure which was better). The HDD is more a case of wording, looking at the motherboard it doesn't say anything about SATA 2 which had me slightly concerned.

Any help/advice what so ever would be greatly appreciate

An 8600GT isn't powerful enough to be likely to ever run in DX10. For that reason a high end 7800+ for the same or less second hand would be a better buy, or for the same performance at a third of the price a 7600GT.

As for SATA2 I was a bit confused as well but what I now understand is that any modern motherboard will have SATA2 (which are physically the same) and a SATA2 drive is backwards compatable anyway so the only distiction to worry about is SATA and IDE.

Looks pretty good, but I *think that might be a bit high price for the 8600gt. The 8800gt 256mb would be worlds better if you could go that route. I mean litereally like 2-4 times as powerfull as that 8600.

RAM -> You should look for some DDR2-800 which is PC2-6400. Jakg might recommend some RAM for you, but that looks good.

Your Mobo should be fine for SATA 2/3.

Are you planning to OC? If so you should be able to hit 3.0+ GHz very easily and safely.

P5B's are INSANELY overpriced on eBuyer. Spend the extra £11 on an Asus P5K.

If you give me a budget, and say if you will or wont be overclocking, if you need RAID etc i'll see what i can russle up.

Around the £650 mark (inc. the monitor), can go a bit over if needed. I doubt I'll be overclocking it and I don't think I'll need RAID.

Maybe a more powerful power supply? 500W seems to cut it a bit close.

What sort of power of a power supply should I be looking at? Also what brands should I trust/avoid.

A Corsair 500w or OCZ StealthXStream 600w would run that system fine, i'd go for the OCZ as they're about the same price.

Anyone got any other suggestions or is that probably the best I'm going to get for my money?

Looks like a good system to me, are you planning to overclock the CPU at all? Thats the only thing that holds it back at the moment. An E6XXX series CPU would improve your performance in games quite a lot I think, unless your going to overclock that one.

If you are going to overclock that one, i strongly suggest getting an aftermarket CPU cooler. The Intel standard one's are a load of pap.

Looking at prices the cheapest E6xxx seems to be about £115, which is a bit too much over what I want to spend at the moment.

No plans to overclock but I might read up on the ins and outs of overclocking and experiment later down the lines

£115 gets you a 2.66 GHz 4 MB Cache E6750.

£75 gets you a 2.2 GHz 2 MB Cache with the E4500.

£50 gets you 2 GHz 1 MB Cache with the E2180.

I'd go for the E2180 and with the £25 you save get some other different parts...
