Quote from Nathan_French_14 :He obviously has a hatred for Hondas, but if he will compare a civic and a golf, at least pick models of the same age! Mk3's are renowned as the worst Golf to drive in terms of driver enjoyment, closely followed by the Mk4.

I am just saying, my own opinion, my mk3 golf GTI felt a lot nicer to drive than the Civic. Yes, a civic is good bang for buck for a quick car. I would own one for that reason, but I don't grow a love for the car to say, like some of these Civic drivers do.

I didn't say I have a hatred for all Honda cars. I like the S2000 and NSX a lot.

220HP At 3500rpm = 447.58nm. That's more than twice as much as usual from an 2.0 N/A engine.
200lbf·ft Equals 271nm, which is far too much as well.
If it would have 290hp at 9500rpm, it would need to have 217nm at 9500rpm. That's a lot, but not impossible.

I think its 220bhp at either 3500-4500rpm between their. They are built for MK1/2 Escort Rally cars

He will get around 290bhp from a C20XE. They've had some work done to them obviously, cost 14 grand each.

Nathan, proof? Look up JRE Racing Engines before making claims ffs lol!

I don't work with building engines no more. Work on Historic Race Cars, Chevron B36,B40,B8 and various B series which are numbered stupidly! E Type jags and Group C LeMan cars.

MK4 Golf is one of the worse ones made yes, but still drives better than a EG Civic, I've even had people who drive K20 EG/EKs etc say same thing, and all they own are Civics. Had a EG Civic and my MK3 Golf GTI was so much more nicer to drive etc... Held road better! More feedback, back to the driver etc...

Any Nathan, you said a Honda Torque, power graph. We will just say power graph as torque figures on a Honda are ****ing shit!

And a VTEC engine doesn't actually really produce much power at all compared to in VTEC etc...

The spike in power when VTEC kicks in is stupid, so they use 4500rpm upwards for VTEC to get power and get it to rev out long to get that!

Plus the price of tuning them is ****ing stupid compared to other cars, yeah NA tuning is expensive, but the scene tax Honda parts carry is ****ing stupid!

Yeah the engines I used to build for a company I worked cost £14k finished, but was a 2.0 redtop engine and the engine would munch a VTEC lump for breakfast! Yeah, had a **** load of work done it etc, but had 220bhp at 3500rpm and that would rev out to 9500rpm. Figures was 290bhp which didn't really matter when the torque figure was at 200ft lb of torque.

Some people are fond of Civics but the craze about them is stupid. Spending £20k on a civic some people when they could go out spend the 10k on buying a manual mk5 Supra Turbo, spending other 10k modifiying it and will have a much nicer car.

The cars do my tits in! On Civics the interior is crap, and the quality is dreadful! Lets use the Rear LCA's where the damper bolts to them, bolts will always snap in there, which is a new rear lca, as usually cant get a replacement bush for the bush the bolt ****s when it snaps.

So, so much better cars out there

To be honest I can't stand Honda's all together! They are still bragging about VTEC etc... Yes, very good variable valve timing but loads of cars use variable valve timing etc...

Plus, tuning the engines is stupidly ****ing expensive and the cars cost a bomb to make look different and not grandad like! So much better cars out there. People crave about the EG Civic, mk4 Golf has nicer driving platform than one etc...

Yeah, they are good cars bang for buck. But still, the honda scene is shit!

Quote from Scrabby :Not entirely true about the drift setting :P

Most people just THINK they can drift while they never done it properly. They wanna join the hype and slam their S13 wich will handle shit.

My BMW is low but not uberlowz y0

Atleast i've got some decent suspension wich is pretty comfortable and not rock hard like D2, Ksport, BC-racing etc.. (all same factory)

Yeah I know dont need to be slammed for drift... Most people just seem to do it lol!

BC Racing aint all that great anyway, mate has a set on his 450bhp S14 and it isn't great at all!

People going on about slammed cars... Yeah it looks good but gets annoying. My old Golf GTI was sat like this:

Sort of height comparison to fence and missus horse:

Yeah, used to get a lot of looks and people liked how low it sat etc... Was alright on the road etc... But going through a multi storey car park in Plymouth, it would bottom out and just sparks everywhere etc... Looked nice but bloody impractical! Plus used to make a mess of the geometry it made etc... (it had all the tracking done with adjusted camber angle over standard specs) Yeah would hardly handle better, was either the same as standard (standard suspension was shit) but the bump steer etc.. was cronic!

BMW is lowered a bit but ride is so much better etc...!

Next car will only ever be lowered 40mm at the most. Just to stiffen it up etc...

Low and slow and impractical > Car Slammed on its ass
Drift > Basically just slammed lol
Track > Properly set up with about 25-40mm drop on totally different shocks/springs, ARBs etc...

Just got an email out of the blue. Not from Rolls Royce though.

Martin O'Connell Racing. Asking for my CV and for me to attend an interview if I am interested. Race in LeMan classic series and a number of endurance racing.

Just what I need

Quote from Osco :Like others said, dress smart but feel comfortable in it. Ie, no tracksuit. Decent trousers (or slacks) and nice shirt will go a long way. Don't forget shoes. No trainers, no matter how clean they are. Also, give honest answers. Speak your mind and feelings. Express your goals. Don't say the things the interviewers might want to hear. I've had similar interviews, both on the same day. In one, I spoke my mind and was honest. In the other one, I gave the 'politically correct' answers so to speak. Guess which one got me the job

Tell me more about that BTEC stuff too.

You'll never see my in a tracksuit unless training or having a lazy day around house. Horrible things when used as apparent 'fashion' lol.

I will be deffo telling them what my goals are, what I love about engineering what interests me etc... What my motivation is etc...

Ah the BTEC stuff, was basically Mechanical Engineering but more specialised. Was taught the basic fundamentals/principles or Suspenion/Braking/Steering/Engines/Electrical systems etc... (self taught myself a lot of it before the course, but had to do the course to get to the next step etc...) Also built an off road buggy from scratch, own space frame for it etc...

Also, good luck. Dress smart and don't give answer you think they want to hear.

What do you mean buddy?

Quote from stan.distortion :Wear whatever looks smart and your comfortable in. Put me in a suit and its obvious I'm not comfortable, not good for an interview.

Yeah I ain't comfortable in a suit at all! Black trousers and a nice looking shirt I am comfortable in, but more comfortable with a nice pair of jeans on and a nice shirt.

Its what they would like to see though. Go in with Rolls Royce shirt on, that would catch their eyes! LOL

Quote from garph :Wear a suit, I have no idea why he would say that. A shirt, tie, trousers and shoes at the very least. Don't wear jeans, I guarantee that would be noticed, in a bad way.

On a side not designer brands don't make you look smart

Thats exactly what I was thinking.

I know designer brands dont make you look always smart. But I wont buy clothes which don't make me look smart. I just mean generally my clothes are smart :/

Cheers buddy I do hope so, I'm currently sat here going out of my mind trying to find an apprenticeship. I have tried to apply for Babcock in the past and they aint keen as they want school leavers and Princess Yachts just dont bother sending the information you ask for at all.

Why do you say not to wear a suit? A nice pair of jeans and shirt then? I usually wear designer brands anyway so always looking smart :/

Quote from S3ANPukekoh3 :wish we had these in nz. good luck man

Cheers dude. Relocate? Thats what I am doing, I live in an old naval city basically and with thinking I have MOD opportunities, I don't. I aint allowed in the forces due to an injury from 5 years ago.

@sam, hope you make it. RR, especially the turbine departement, sounds really interesting. Do they even do much engine development for cars? They get those from BMW anyway.

I hope I do also. The Bristol department I believe is defence aerospace. So will still be plane/helicopter engines.

I believe the whole of a Rolls Royce is now built by BMW and branded a Rolls Royce.

Quote from J@tko :I know - I go there. (or was that your point? :tilt

Ditto!

No, I meant with Brunel good engineer and now have named a uni after him. A lot of people go there I'm sure for the name. I was just stating that Bristol Uni is suppose to be brilliant for engineering which I have only just found out today whilst doing research on Rolls Royce.

What was it that Brunel did for Bristol again, I cant remember lol. We have the Tamar Bridge, tiny bridge but brilliant suspension bridge none the less.

What does get me thinking though, how people once just learnt these things through research, so what would a normal person be able to do on their own by teaching themselves. If you know what I mean

Quote from J@tko :Studying for an Engineering degree?

A "proper" engineer is someone like Brunel, not Bruce from British Gas who comes to fix your boiler.

I was looking on the internet, apparently Bristol Uni is also very good for Engineering degrees. Would love to go to Brunel at one stage. Have to get qualified enough for Uni first ahaha.

Brunel was a bloody good engineer tbh. Got a lovely bit of his work 1 mile from my house.

Was looking at cranfields about a month ago, dogs bollocks and have to be dog bollocks to cope with it and get in by looks of things. Yeah I know being a masters etc... But they deffo seem to take the best of the best on.

Mandatory B-grade meme dump.

Haha so true. When I was at college people thought they would be basically be a mechanic and hated it when we was sat in college learning all the calculations but I loved it. Once got head around it all was good fun.

Quote from stan.distortion :Bit unfair, for all either of us know they guy could be truly gifted and will cruise through the interview. Sorry I cant help you with advice, anything I know from RR employees is 20 years out of date but I guess they still pride themselves on quality and precision. Good luck with it

You say 20 years out of date, but after looking at their documentary. They are still a little ahead with technology which is all the matters really. Aslong as get good training, good working life and have people invest and look after you, all what matters for a good working life.

Wouldn't want to be in an apprenticeship where they use you as cheap labour, you know if you are used as that, a lot of time and effort isn't going to be put into you.

People seem to look at Engineers in disgust in the UK. But I love it. Just hope they give me the chance as usually get pipped at the post by bloody 16year olds as they have amazing GCSEs, when I have alright GCSEs, engineering qualifications and experience. Gets annoying and depressing at times.

Quote from stan.distortion :Just a suggestion, it might not be a good idea to give them that impression, don't know how it is now but RR used to like apprentices to make a career of it and stay with them for life.

I very much like planes, used to look into them a lot. But its engines, which is what I like. I'm sure I put earlier that I would probably find myself to enjoy it which it what I have found so far. I very much like every aspect of engineering. To me, learning and developing new ways of why things are there and why should be used and their uses is what I enjoy.

Currently, I can't stop looking into the company. And are excited to maybe get in to the job.

I have heard 90% of people high up in Rolls Royce were once apprentices.

What I am sort of saying. I am using doors I have never thought of using to get into the engineering industy at the level I would love to work at. One day I may fancy a career change, which one day everyone thinks about. Whether I do it or not, is another matter.

Where I get into RR or not, thats just something I will have to find out.

Quote from J@tko :I remember watching a documentary about RR a while ago (I'm an engineer so general interest :P) and there was an apprentice on there talking about RR. I imagine it's very very competitive but if you get in there then you're definitely going up in the world. As general advice:

You never know what you might get, and who might notice your name for the future - that's what I'm doing at the minute

Yeah deffo. Just have to hope and try my best in the interview and on the tests

I did apply for the technical by mistake, meant to apply for practical, made the changes earlier though. More than the qualifications for the practical Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship there. Also applied for RBR Apprenticeship scheme (thats a long shot) and Land Rover/Jag. Got unconditional offer onto National College of Motorsport also. Applied for engineering apprenticeships in Plymouth; Princess Yachts and Kawasaki. Just got to see what happens.

Yeah its the planes. I am using it as another door to get into the industry.

I have experience in engineering industry, more motorsport based and also have a BTEC in Vehicle Technology (Motorsport Engineering).

What I like about the apprenticeship is not a company that is really going to use you as cheap labour (had that already done to me, like being taken advantage of, not fun) and also will take you onto University.

I had a lovely conversation earlier with the HR department of RR and you could tell they was impressed with me. Was talking to someone high up and had them in fits of laughter etc... And just making general conversation whilst they looked into my inquiry. Just to try get my name remembered etc... Wont happen but never know.

I was just asking of ways to face the interview as I know what I mean just putting it into words as I am very much a hands on person.

In 10 years I want to be in the Motorsport sector, just using other doors to get there and to get qualified but may find myself to actually like working on the planes.

It seems to be very much of the engines which I have applied for. Which I am extremely interested in and already have experience building race engines for group 4 rally.

Just to see what happens, and to sell myself to be better than the other applicants.

@Klutch, isn't really needed is it. I've spent nearly the last 2 years of college and also researching engineering. I wont get my hopes up no, but no harm in trying. Dream is to work in F1, but that is a very big dream which only a very few lucky people get to carry onto.

Has anyone been apart of, or applied for the Rolls Royce apprenticeship?

I have just applied for it and was wondering if anyone had any advice through the selection process? There is 20 people being taken on, so I highly need to make myself stand out. Suit will be out etc and trying to sell myself in the interview (no puns on that people :P lol).

So does anyone have any advice for the selection process.

Quote from R34GTR :Could always look into a 1.4 TDi 6N2 Polo, the three cylinder one..they seem to be pretty popular but I'm not too sure of the MPG figures

Know someone with a remapped one with a few other mods, still does 65mpg on a run! And its quick with the remap etc...

Its a PD engine with a cylinder cut off basically. Can be pushed to 120-130bhp without mega money tbh.

VW diesels always good on fuel! I know someone with a Fabia with the PD130 engine, yeah hes tuned the balls out of it, 275bhp put out on the dyno and still returns 40mpg

Quote from Klutch :Had a series 3 rx7 for like 2 years..

Only mods were;
Extractors
3" Straight pipe into Magnaflow dumpy tip
Ratsnest&Emissions gear all removed
14x6.5 watanabes (fronts sit flush with guard..rears were in a bit)

Rest of the money was just spent fixing it and slowly restoring it until i had to sell it >.<

We had a FB in where I used to work where we specialised in RX7s. FC with full FD running gear and engine, only just had all the prep work finished though, everything is in the place needed and has just gone off to be sprayed and the aero kit to be fitted and then everything bolted back up and then a setup
