There should be plenty of inspiration here: generally.rscsites.org

The GeneRally community still hosts a monthly track designing competition. Although some are re-creations of rl tracks, there is also a diverse range of well-designed and creative originals.

GeneRally also comes packaged with a comprehensive yet easy-to-use track editor, where one can even change elevation, add trees, track markings, etc.

Btw, I'm not part of the GeneRally marketing team, I just enjoy playing the game and thought this may assist track designers in this competition and to open the door to a number of creative track designs.

Quote from Frankmd :Here is version 0.9. Some new features etc. Version 1.0 will be the same as 0.9, but then bugfixed and including all the cameras I've made and the ones that were found in this topic (fetzo: I have to edit your camera's to make them work properly in v0.9), since I am sure there are some minor bugs in it. Please report them here

Where is version 0.9? Is it meant to be somewhere in your post? Am I missing something? :P

**EDIT** Found it!

Quote from Electrik Kar :When I look at the current default .dds files, I think that with a lot of stuff, there mustn't be higher res versions. So, it would take more than for Eric to simply export those files at higher-res, which doesn't do anything for the texture detail. Maybe he's working on higher res versions now. But then again maybe not (). We may start to get an idea of the bigger picture with Eric's South City update. I also hope there will be a higher-res option once S2 is final, because imo the default textures now are just too low-res for a modern game. They just seem like placeholder textures to me.

Aah ok I guess I just assumed the native files would have been reasonably high res. I agree that some of the textures look like placeholder graphics, especially the rb4 interior :P LOL it looks horrible on my 22" screen :P

BTW, thanks for the link Flinty

In my opinion this would work well but would need to be a server-side option. Therefore servers that are set up to host sprint races could have it off, whereas servers hosting longer races (especially in leagues) could have it on.

Good idea to display the driver's name in their grid spot so they know where they need to stop.

The parade lap would work best with a rolling start, but with some clever programming it would work well with a standing start too.

+1 from me

Quote from Slopi :I voted no simply because 3rd parties have developed high-res packs for LFS (sure, not all textures, but getting there)

I'd rather have the devs put their time into new tracks, new cars, physics improvements, etc, than something to do with graphics. I know the new comps can handle a bunch of eyecandy, but that's not what makes this a successful simulation.

At the same time, I agree with the notion that this sim could look a lot better, but again, I wouldn't want the devs distracted with that 'issue'.

Fair enough point that the devs should put their time into more important aspects of the game, but I doubt this would take more than a day to implement and the advantages of it would be clear to see.

Although there are 3rd party high res packs available, imo only the most dedicated followers of LFS would seek to find them all. Plus a lot of the custom high res textures are different from those in the game. I just think it would be good to have an easily accessible all-in-one pack with all official textures, rather than a bunch of random look-a-likes, which are good but are different nonetheless.

Perhaps this is not an immediate priority, but I reckon this should be done before S2 Beta then full, which is when the reviewers will step in!!

Official high res texture add on pack ..

Now that I have (finally) upgraded my PC and have a 22" monitor which supports 1680x1050 resolution I have the capacity to run higher res textures in LFS. Problem is, I have no choice but to sift through lfs-database.com (great website it is) to find third party high res textures.

My improvement suggestion is for the devs to create a high res texture add on pack which can be downloaded in addition to the game (it would be available in the 'Additional downloads' section of the website).

For this to happen, I believe the first step would be for Eric to open the native file of each LFS texture and export them at a higher res. Scawen would then just need to create an exe which prompts the user to select their LFS folder and the improved textures would be installed ala test patches.

Scawen could also add an option within the 'Graphics' menu which allows the user to choose which high res textures to use (eg track, car, driver), or if they don't wish to run the high res textures at all (depending on the track and number of cars in the race and the resulting strain on their machine). This would require that the high res textures are given their own folder, as opposed to overwriting the existing ones.

Please let me know what you think of this idea ..

Quote from neglouseight :My suggestion isn't how to set up a pit stop it's how the LFS handles a pit stop. Right now it does everything one step after another. When in a lot of types of Motor racing everything is done at the same moment. This has nothing to do with F12. It has to do with LFS fixing damage, then changing the front tires, then fixing damage, then changing back tires, then adding fuel. Etc.

All of this should be going on at the exact same moment, not in steps or stages. Below is listing everything as a example. On screen bold would mean these items are currently active during the pit stop. This is just a basic idea.

Fuel #%
Front Wing Damage
Front Wing Adjustment
Front Tire Change
Body Damage
Rear Tire Change
Rear Wing Damage
Rear Wing Adjustment

In addition to that, maybe it would be an idea for the driver to be able to alter some of these settings DURING the pitstop, e.g. fuel %, wing settings. I know that this can be adjusted with the F12 menu, but being able to see all of your pit requests and being able to quickly alter some things would be quite useful. Also, trying to adjust things while racing can be tricky ..

Additional support for leagues ..

A really helpful feature for leagues could be for a fully customisable race weekend feature. This would be set up by league admins prior to the event, and would include details such as:

- points system that is used, thereby total points totals will be calculated at the conclusion at the event, therefore saving time for admins who otherwise have to calculate points tallies manually

- qual format (e.g. one-lap, timed session, f1-style qual), number of races, number of laps in each race, reverse grid races, rolling or standing starts, etc

- the name of the event, round number etc, which would be saved on LFSWorld

Almost limitless options could be included here, making an event fully customisable.

Please discuss ..

Quote from AndreABG :@geezer45: which OS do you use? I've never had a bluescreen on XP, not in LfS and not in another game/ application

I use Windows XP.

Quote from EeekiE :Sounds like a hardware issue, perhaps overheating or dated/beta drivers?

Hmm not sure what beta drivers are But one thing I forgot to mention is that I recently replaced some of the dds files with high-resolution ones. Could just be a coincidence though.

Anyway, after experiencing the same issues but online (as opposed to just in replays) I reverted to Patch V and didn't experience any issues. I will try V8 in a sec and report my findings ..

Yay drivers 1 lap behind will have a grey pointer on the map ! Such a small thing but soooo useful !!
