Quote from Impreza WRX :That's why I drive foot to the firewall in my cars. With 0-60 times in the mid 8's, there is no way to safely get up to speed without punching it, unless you like waiting up to 20 minutes for a long enough break that you can roll out at granny speeds.

Excuse me, but are you kidding? 0-60 in less than nine seconds is hardly slow in my book!I've been driving a car with a 20sec time quite happily, and that includes getting on the autobahn safely. You just have to use your eyes and right foot with a bit of foresight and you will be fine.

You could have a prompt before the setup is sent, people who don't want to send it can leave the server without or go to the garage to select another set.

I don't think it's possible, except perhaps through some external profiler software (which brand is you joystick, logitech?).

In any way I think that while racing sometimes you might want to shift down while on the gas or coasting (after avoiding a crashing car for instance you might find yourself in a higher gear than optimal) and then I believe it would be most annoying to have to brake in order to change down. Seeing that you come from GPL it shouldn't be too hard for you, or does GPL support that multi-button-axis-assignment?

Oh, just read that you simply want to learn the tracks. Then it should be ok I guess.

Depending on the driver I believe (sim-)racing experience can work both ways: Either it makes you too confident in your car control so you take unneccessary risks / drive absent-mindedly, or it will give you a better feeling for what can go wrong. Before starting simracing and without a lot of driving experience I took quite some stupid risks when driving of which I only later fully understood how dangerous the situations were. Starting simracing has certainly made me become a much more careful driver.

And for the record, the car I made most of my driving experience with was a 45hp/800kg Polo and I agree that this snail of a car (0-100kmh in 21s according to the manual) was much more fun than the more powerful and heavier cars I have driven and also got me everywhere more than fast enough.

Saying that a 100+hp car is not fast enough to get you in trouble seems to miss the point. As soon as you get to more than walking speed you can easily kill a pedestrian and also yourself if you are unlucky enough. Just imagine moving an object more than 15 times your weight at more than double the speed you can dash. Then pair this figure with a city driving situation and remember the last time you knocked your foot on a table leg while walking around in your house. Measure the result in "Ouch".

Quote from W1ldPort75 :Thx for the prog , gonna used it every time i play LFS
Its a shame that i cant look to the right or left , but i know you will fix that soon

I rather am sure that the devs will pick up on this idea and code it as an option right into LFS...

Great work though, scawen

I really hope Usernames used on the forum are still Latin only. I'd hate to spend hours trying to tell people apart like "Wait, that's the guy whose name starts with that character that looks a little bit like a house, just with those three strokes in the middle instead of an x ..."

Quote from kaynd :I am glad that it helped someone.

Since I am with my wheel again, I spent some time trying to make that set less understeery while keeping good balance.
Unfortunately the luck of rear antiroll bar ruins the balance. (in that case, while turning, a stiff front antiroll bar lowers the front of the car way more than the back… That causes first turn in oversteer, then mid corner understeer and at the corner exit while you decrease the steering angle, redusing the antiroll bar’s effect, the front suspention decompresses sending weight to the back creating some more corner exit oversteer.)
So I got rid of it... Hardened up the springs to get the same total roll stiffness as in my previous set and tested various settings in that way.
The front antiroll bar is set to 0 and you can use it for fine tuning, adjusting it by 1 or 2N/mm to kill any unnecessary oversteer... till a limit... it's not super glue or something
I am happy with the result. For me that’s better balanced (maybe not easier though) than my previous set and it still has high tire pressures and reasonable mid low negative camber values.

[edit] with the front ARB set to 2N/mm it handles like a dream for my driving style at blackwood.
But anyway this is a general base set so I leave it to 0 [/edit]

I like it! It feels more controllable and responsive under partial throttle now. With 0N/mm ARB the oversteer is less snappy but occurs a tad early in highspeed corners. With 2N/mm the snap oversteer is back but even for me it's still possible to keep it close to the edge. While your first setup was clearly safer, the car is now more fun to drive, so I'll stick with the new one for a bit.

Already had some fun online with the old set yesterday, Redline seems to be running LRFs now, woot.

Thanks for the setup, greatly appreciated!

Quote from kaynd :I made recently a general “sporty” setup for the RAC trying mainly to make it more (?) netural… a bit les mid corner understeer but also less unstable while changing direction, maybe a bit less understeery on the corner exit while keeping it kind of predictable while loosing rear traction because of excessive wheel spin.

Brilliant setup, I love it. I am an absolutely lousy driver and now I can finally learn how to drive the RAC, since it isn't so terribly frustrating anymore! Very chuckable and always controllable, I didn't think this was possible for the RAC.

Thanks

Quote from sdrjfd1 :Ohh yeah, and we sould put some yellow stars on the cars/avatars.
Its a stupid idea.

Anybody knows why.

Take it from a german, that's a stupid comparison.

The question on debate is whether the right to post on the general board is something you should obtain with the purchase of S1/S2, but, since usually demo users and licensed users talk about the same things really (tech support, improvement suggestion, racing talk) I give it a

-1.

If you don't want complaning spoilt demo users, then don't spoil them in the first place IMO.

Anyway in one or two weeks we will have forgotten that there ever was a GTT in the demo and we'll talk about it in the "You know you're a long time LFS player if u can remember..."-thread.

You're skins and setups are not lost, they are still there. You have to rename the setups though, in order to work with the patch Y naming convention.

So all you have to do is purchase S1 or S2, the former which sets you back the ridiculously cheap amount of $23.81.

That's like estimated 5 meals at McD, a few miles worth of gas, a months bus tickets or a night drinking with friends.

Why didn't you use "Gas/Brake pedal reduction" inside LFS? I got mine set to .75 to get more realistic throttle and brake response. It does exactly the same!

I just hate when your car's sound is interfering with the another one of the same type and you get those freako resonance frequencies. Completely unrealistic and annoying, so

+1

from me.

I understand though that some people consider it rice-boy-ish but as said before, the interference we have right now bugs me so much I'd cope with "my pipe is fatter than yours"-contests...

Quote from Zyber :i didnt meen it to be hard coded.. i ment to have the ability to turn it on in the game instead of doing it in windows.. i just belived alot of ppl wanted it since so many are using AA and AF in lfs

Oh yes, that would be convenient!

I am on a notebook with:

c2d (7200 I think, 2GHz and 4MB Cache)
2GB RAM
GeForceGo7700 (512MB)

I run 2xAA and 8xAF and play on an external monitor with 1920x1200 pixels.

That gives me under 25 fps on a full grid, but since I primarily race the Raceabout, that doesn't happen very often .

And no, I don't think AA should be hardcoded into LFS. What's the point really? Thats what GFX card drivers are for IMO.

Quote from Forbin :They did in the aerospace industry, at least around the time of WW2. Look at the P-51 Mustang. Very streamlined. Or the X-15, first test-flown in 1959. Hell, airplanes even rely on aerodynamics to stay aloft, and the Wright brothers figured that one out over 100 years ago using Bernoulli's principle.

Just in racing common philosophy was until the late 60s to reduce aero drag at any cost, hence the 'cigar' shape of GPLs cars.

I think now with the last tyre physics changes the drivability of LFS has finally matched GPL. Of course LFS has always been the more modern game, menus, features etc.

Force feedback by the way I find surprisingly similar between LFS and GPL, hence both give me a similar driving sensation. Quite different really from netkar namie (which still is brilliant) or netkar pro.

Quote from Mikkel Petersen :Regarding reversing, how come (in your usual everyday car of course!) the car's engine/gearbox always sounds louder when reversing?

Is that gearbox whine or what?

I think I read something like the following on howstuffworks.com, you can check if you like:
The forward gears are helical cut (the teeth are conected via a greater surface) thus reducing the noise of them turning against each other. While driving forward, all the forward gears are always engaged, only the output shaft is connected to different gears to change ratios. To engage reverse, you have to disengage alle the forward gears and engage another part of the transmission, which obviously has to be disconnected from the forward gears. You can't simply engage and disengage helical gears (look up a picture to understand) so to engage reverse, actually two _straight_ cut gears engage, which produce a lot of noise when turning against each other.

Hope this is correct and understandable
