Results in Vista after hotfix is pretty interesting. Quite close to XP, considering Vista is a much bigger system. So not bad imo.

All you guys bashing and trashing Vista, this is exactly what happened when XP was released - "Hell no! I'll never switch, cause it's soooo slow and using all my ram! Win98 forevva!"

I'll admit that I've never been the biggest MS fan. I've mostly been using Linux for like about 15 years to do the serious stuff, and Windows for games. But I have to admit, I don't think Vista is that bad as some say.

Quote from gohfeld23 :Vista preloads (dedicates ram) to apps you might use sometime during your on time. Sounds dandy til you realise what that software is. 90% is MS junk (media player, IE, etc) and the other 10% is what it gathers from your frequent usage.

And where did you read that? Have you ever tried Vista?
Trouble reaching the LFS sites

Seems like all the LFS sites has mysteriously vanished from the DNS servers here in Norway. I couldn't reach any of them, neither from home or from work. Had to reconfigure my network using the OpenDNS servers. Very weird.

Dudes, memory management is a little more advanced nowadays than back in the MS-DOS days.

Loading apps in Vista is definately faster for me than in XP. For instance, Firefox launches pretty much instant in Vista, whereas in XP it takes a couple of seconds.

Lol! Good to know, finally I can stop wondering.
Weirdo Americans though.

Yeah, let as many antivirus/antispyware programs as possible do a scan. There's unfortunately not a single program yet that can catch everything, so spread the chanches by running as many as possible. Also feel free to attach an output log from Hijackthis here.

I'm linking to some of the better free antispyware programs.

Spyware Terminator
Spybot S&D
AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition
SuperAntiSpyware
Ad-Aware 2007 Free
A-Squared Free

I'm sure there's more I forgot.

I have a question - it's probably only Americans who can answer it.
Sometimes when there's an advertisement for the next episode of a show, they say "Characters welcome". What the heck does that mean? I know the meaning of each individual word, but put together like that it doesn't make sense to me. It's bugged me for a while now, so would be cool to know what the expression means.

Quote from Funnycat :BTW new versions of Kaspersky (v6) are a LOT faster and more bug-free than the older (v5)

You mean v7?

I think it's maybe possible to run the update in safe mode, if you don't loose connection there. If that doesn't work, I think the version on the website was released just a few days ago, so it should be pretty much up-to-date.
You might also try WinSockXPFix, to see if that can cure the connection problems.

Well, Kaspersky has one of the best detection rates, and I merely suggested you temporarily installed it. I don't use it permanently myself cause I feel it's a little bloated, but that doesn't take away the fact that it's very good at detecting threats. So I sometimes use it purely to clean computers, then uninstall it and usually install AVG free.

Download Kaspersky
Turn off System Restore
Uninstall Avast
Install Kaspersky
Scan and clean
If problem still persists, scan with Ad-aware, Spybot and the like
When clean, enable System Restore and run Windows Update
Uninstall Kaspersky and install Avast

And GHz doesn't tell anything about the actual speed of the cpu. A 2GHz can be faster than a 3Ghz one, it all depends on what cpu and what technology is used.

@JTbo: 10, 5 minutes to boot? Wow, that's quite a lot!
On my system (AMD X2 4600, 2GB, SATA disk), Vista takes 31 seconds from start of boot till desktop appears. XP takes 23 seconds.

To me it sounds like you may have a faulty harddrive. Download a program called HDD Regenerator and let it scan your drive. I have used it with great success on quite a few harddrives that were almost impossible to read from. It really can do wonders to a bad HD.

Quote from anik360 :thats how much ram i use and i have 2 gb but does use quite a lot of cpu mostly 10-23% for sidebar alone

It really stays at 40% when idle? Somethings wrong then...

I work as a computer technician, and when people come with their computers complaining about it being slow and crashing a lot, it's almost always one of these things:

* Infected with viruses or malware
* Bad sectors on the harddrive
* They have way too many programs running in the background
* They have Norton installed

Quote from al heeley :I'd love to know how to input some UK weather stations closer to my area.

There's a list of stations supported by the gadget here:
http://weather.cobbnz.com/weather/ViewWeatherSites.aspx

And here you can see a world wide map:
http://weather.cobbnz.com/weather/MesoMap.aspx

Not all have been added to the gadgets list, but if there's a station close to you that isn't, you can either add it yourself or get the station owner to do it.

Look in "Add or Remove Programs" if there's anything related to Live ID, and just uninstall it. I also recommend you upgrade to the latest Live Messenger.

On my system Vista feels faster and more responsive than XP. I boot between XP, Vista and Gentoo Linux. I agree that 1GB memory for Vista is just barely enough, >2GB is in my opinion the best for it. But don't go completely blind about what it reports as free memory, it manages the memory differently from XP.

Here's a program for tweaking and optimizing Vista:

Also worth noting is that Microsoft recently made available two pretty major updates dealing with performance and compatibility issues. They have not been released on Windows Update yet, but will later as well as be included in the upcoming SP1.

I think something like this maybe would work good to help up the quality. I tried to install it on my test board, but sadly I got all sorts of error messages on the front end. Hopefully the author can work out the bugs, cause it seems to have potential.

Be sure to count in some time for people being late, taking too long at the loo, and general confusing delaying things. These things never goes as 100% planned.
