Actually, there's a guy in Norway who got Windows 7 to boot with 350mb of RAM.
This seems pretty good to me. Obviously, once booted, it wouldn't be able to do much with such a small amount of memory left to deal with (probably none), but it shows that it doesn't need as much as Vista to actually work.
Very interesting article, this card indeed really looks to be interesting when put in Crossfire. I've been looking it up, and it seems the AIBs (Sapphire, Diamond, etc) have all decided to put a crappy cooler on the thing, so it does look quite awful, but I guess it doesn't matter too much.
I've decided that the processor is going to be the 955, so everything I'm unsure about has to revolved around that. Concerning the mobo, it doesn't seem to make a huge difference what choice I make. It's basically between Asus, Gigabyte and MSI. My current mobo is an MSI and I've never had any trouble with it, so I'm favouring the MSI for the moment (it's also something like 10$ cheaper :P). As for the memory, I think I'm going to buy 4GB DDR3 now and see how much I get out of it. It'll probably get something like 3.25GB or something.
Then as you said, waiting for Windows 7 is probably the thing to do. Then, I'll probably buy another 4GB then. I've been told that 7 itself will use somewhere around 3.5GB, so that increasing to 8GB would definitely not be luxury. Besides, 7 will support more than 4GB of ram, and 4GB RAM sticks will probably come out eventually (if they haven't yet), so I could technically put up to 16GB of memory in those mobos, they support that much.
I'm just saying that if we're to get some updates on the cars, why not just make updated duplicates instead? For instance, you keep the old version of the car, but instead of just changing a few things on the cars like the horsepower, suspension and what-not, you evolve it into something you'd expect to have been developed as the new version of the car.
No, randomly changing a few things on the cars from time to time is not realistic. Evolving them is.
Uh, most people who go track day do that. The most they'll do is change a few parts on it from time to time, but that isn't done in a random way: they're making it better. Increasing horsepower, suspension, handling, etc. This relates more to the car upgrades à la NFS, which aims at personally increasing your car performance's in the idea of making it better. Your suggestion is to upgrade everybody's car all at once, and not necessarily by making them actually better.
Besides, do you really think that, for instance, decreasing a car's hp by 20 would actually be that interesting? Yes, maybe some setups would require adaptation, and so would the drivers, but within a couple of DAYS it would all be okay, and it would be back to the routine anyway. To make any tangible and long-lasting changes tp the cars, you'd have to basically change everything about them, and at that point we're talking about completely new cars.
No for the cars, 'maybe' for the tracks. Yes, tracks do get updated from time to time, but the only way cars get the same updates is if they get an evolution (which has been proposed here). Unless we're talking about completely new cars, then I really don't see how this would be realistic, let alone very interesting.
I've been doing some research. This is a complicated subject. From what I understand, there's no perfect scenario, as:
1. There is no tri-channel motherboards compatible with AM3 sockets yet. This means that while I could very well buy a dual-channel DDR3 motherboard, I would find myself limited at 4 memory sticks once Windows 7 comes. That's hardly a good thing. Besides, I would then need to replace the 4GB memory bundle (2 sticks) to get up to something like 16GB (4 sticks of 4GB? That probably doesn't even exist yet).
2. There are numerous motherboards with tri-channel DDR3 support available with core i7 compatibility. The problem, however, is that buying one of these would obviously require me to get tri-channel DDR3 memory, which either comes in 3GB or 6GB size. 3GB isn't good, as it would last only until Windows 7 is out (I could then buy another set of 3GB, but running Windows 7 along with heavy games on 6GB of ram seems short). 6GB, on the other hand, is too much for my 32 bit Windows. 32 bit XP only supports 4GB of ram, and I do not know what it would do with 6GB of ram. Possibly nothing but recognize only 4, but it could also break the space continuum (:shrug. I could always get a 64bit XP, but I've heard it isn't compatible with some (a lot?) of programs.
I find the new Phenom II 955 from AMD quite interesting. The price is the same as the 940 was only a few weeks ago, and it's performances are much better, sometimes even topping Intel Core i7 920's. That's pretty great for something about 70$ CAD cheaper.
There really doesn't seem to be a perfect solution for the motherboard, though.
@R.Rolz: I'm really skeptical about buying a cheaper system, for instance as you said a phenom III and a cheaper mobo. Obviously being cheap is a good thing, but while such a system might be able to run even today's most power hungry games, it would become outdated rather quickly. This is the exact thing I've experienced with my current layout. It wasn't top of the line when I bought it, and it showed, even in games there weren't new back then. As power for games is my primary concern here, I think that opting for a more expensive, but more durable setup might be a good idea. The cheaper setup would only need to be updated earlier.
QFE: this type of thread is not needed. The people concerned by who's leader of the WR charts will by themselves go to lfsworld and then proceed to congratulate the leader by PM (if they can be bothered, personally I wouldn't). If you're not bothered to do that, you won't be bothered to post in a thread begging for congratulations.
You really have to be a jerk to get banned on 30 servers in 30 days. Most people don't play nearly on that many servers, so one would really have to get banned everywhere he goes to reach that number. It's one ban per day, which really isn't that many hours of play to get the ban.
To me, you shouldn't need to be banned on 30 servers to get the master ban. Personally, I can't remember being banned a single time. Most people who'll get the ban probably get it unfairly, and only once (stupid admins, misunderstood situation, etc) because those situations will usually not happen twice. With very much bad luck, somebody might get banned 2 or 3 times unfairly from different servers. More than that, you're probably doing something wrong, and deserve the ban. To me, even 5 bans would be enough to generate a master ban.
Why not have increasing ban durations depending on the number of bans received? For instance, if you get banned 5 times, you get a week. If you get banned 10 times, you get a month, and so forth.
I think I missed something, but where does the assumption that the patch (test patch) was coming two days before the day after tomorrow? I've read something about a flash application, but what's that aboot?
Gosh, how low has this fallen. Even I didn't believe this would reach such a low point, but asking something as contrived as an internet 8 ball is really, really hopeless. You can ask the damn thing the same question (in my case: 'Are you contrived?') and get a different answer each time.
Maybe Scavier use this thing to know when they'll release the patch and it hasn't said 'Tomorrow' yet.
I don't know if you've noticed, but there's absolutely nothing written on those surgical masks everybody will be wearing in a bit. I couldn't help but think to myself: what a waste of advertisement space! Think about it, it's the perfect spot. When you go down the streets and come across somebody, the first place you look is at their face. Sure, you're probably more likely to look at their eyes first, but if they wear a surgical mask written NIKE on it in big, flashy (glow in the dark?) letters, I'm sure you couldn't help but run to the nearest shoe store to buy a pair of knickers.
Yet, I still haven't seen one with something written on it, and I really wonder why that is. Maybe it's a bit taboo. Too personal. You don't write stuff on your car advertising knickers, so why would you write something on your surgical mask? Yet, while cars have different colors, all surgical masks look the same, so the comparison is faulty. I'm quite sure we'll soon see people decorating their masks, painting them in bright colors or maybe even flags! I, for one, will sell my mask as an advertisement space. Hey, after all, I walk to go to work, and that's a good 15 to 20 minutes where people can see me walk up the streets, and rush to buy a pair of knickers.
Sigh, I'm here in front of the computer, eating Mini Wheats; I haven't checked the news today so far, so I don't know how many more cases have shown up, but something tells me the death toll probably is over 200 in Mexico. I've heard Pres. Obama's conference yesterday, and something tells me that if it keeps going like this, schools are going to be close, people will get off the streets, and everybody will wear masks. It's hard for me to imagine such a thing, I've not lived through a pandemic episode, or even through any kind of event that can get people off the streets (war, etc).
I think I'm going to check my Mini Wheats box to make sure they're not made in Mexico.
Oi! What's the hate aboot? Constructive comments, please
I partially agree. Yes, people should do what they want, especially when we're talking about something as personal as the body. However, sometimes I can't help but wonder what made this person decide to look like this. In a way I find it only interesting, I ponder how this person has been crafted, but also there's a part of me (the follow the line part, it's very strong) that just disapproves. I guess it's just me.
The LFS model indeed seems quite accurate. I guess it was a requirement VW asked for. The FBW is also pretty accurate, it's just that people don't really know the real thing, so it's harder to notice wrong things.
There's one other thing I note from those comparison pictures, though. The lightning in LFS is really a big issue. Look at the dash in LFS and IRL, there's really a huge lightning difference.
Uh, what's so special arriving in 48 hours makes you think the patch might be released? The month of may? I don't think Scawen really takes in considering that kind of stuff for his release dates. The only occasion I remember was the Christmas special, but that was a few years ago. Besides, if the patch is ready, do you really think Scawen would wait for 2 days to release it? If it indeed released in 48 hours, it'll be just a coincidence.
Also, keep in mind that there's going to be a test patch first. Scawen doesn't release things before they get tested by the community as a whole. It helps find more bugs.
