Quote from G!NhO :They should have closed this thread...

Probably. I don't think there's a lot more that could be said about this subject. You know, the whole "where LFS is and where LFS is going" argument.

Here's my point of view of this issue. For those who have come across some of my posts in the past, you might have noticed how pessimistic I have been regarding the development of LFS. I have criticized Scavier numerous times for things that I consider they could do differently (and in my opinion better). And I know I've not been alone to disagree with the way Scavier work.

However, in the past few months, my view of the development of LFS has changed a bit. I just had to ask myself these questions: does my criticizing (or anyone's criticizing for that matter) of Scavier's methods have ever affected how they actually handle their work? No. Does anybody have a chance to ever change the way Scavier work? No. This conclusion being made, I've tried to be more positive than negative of Scavier's work. And even when I can't find anything positive to say about what I see, I try to make some constructive comments.

Instead, I've discovered the joys of posting in the off topic sections, and I've picked up skinning again.

Well, my grand father recently acquired a lap top (from Dell, I believe). He doesn't seem too bad at it, but he does encounter more problems than the average user does. Learning a new technology or ability is much harder when you're old. Not only because your brain isn't as fit to learn as a young person's brain, but there's also something quite intimidating in learning a completely new technology at that point in your life.

Most of us were born with all those technologies already available (or in the process of emerging), so it doesn't pose that much of problem to us. However, think about this: new technologies will be developed in the next decades, and will you really be willing to learn a completely new thing when you get older? Something you've only heard about, but never touched? It must not be encouraging.

Hai guys, could someone render this skin for me, please? Preferably something seen from the front, but with enough angle to be able to see the side well enough. Dark Grey wheels are what I had thought of for this skin.

Cheers!

Ah, maybe it would look better, indeed. It sort of fell into place by itself when I placed the logo there, but I'll give it a try and see what it looks like. I was also not sure whether or not I should put some kind of sponsors under the name tag and the flag, just over the grid thingy. It kind of felt weird when I tried it

Well, after quite a few wasted tries (boy, oh boy, was it ugly), here's my first completed attempt at skinning this thing. I found it's surprisingly not that awful to skin, despite the shape of the car. I loosely took the inspiration from a jetta tdi cup, but in the end only the number plates are left from the original thing.

Oh, by the way, I know the AA on these screen shots is awful, but it seems to be the best thing computer can do. I honestly don't know what graphic card is in this thing, or even if there's one.

Another interesting figure to consider: should Scavier decide to change the way things are in the demo right now, whether by adding a time limit or some other form of limitation, what percentage of demo users would buy the full version instead of just say "oh, well, I'll just uninstall it then"?

Something else! I wonder what are the reasons demo users have not to buy the full version? They might:

1. Not want to spend money on it (for all sorts of reasons, from not having money to spend on entertainment at the moment or because their parents don't want to buy it for them, you know, that kind of stuff :tilt

2. Because they don't consider it good enough for them to actually buy it and that they want to reserve their money for something else (NFS? :really

3. Because the demo is enough for them and that they intend to keep playing it without ever buying the full version (even if those were billionaires they wouldn't buy it).

Now, the interesting thing is that there's basically nothing you can do about any of those three types of people not buying LFS. The first guy hasn't got money, and until he has got some, he won't buy it. The second guy will endlessly buy the endless series of NFS and will therefore never have any money to spend on a 'simulator with crappy graphics' (although this statement is arguably true :shy. Finally, the third guy will never buy it, whatever happens, because the demo is good enough to satisfy his entertainment desires.

So what type of people actually buy this thing!? Or we could see this another way: what pushes somebody to try the demo? They know it's a simulator, and since there are enough screenshots available to discourage the typical NFS buyer, who the hell were those 130,000 people that downloaded it since july 2008? Assuming the number of people who could potentially be interested in LFS is only growing because some kids discover an eagerness to test reality as they get older, the only ways LFS gains users are:

- When those kids get old enough to enjoy LFS.
- When people that didn't know LFS hear aboot it somewhere and decide to try it out.

Now, the kids being essentially broke until they're 15 or so, and their parents obviously not wanting to buy them videogames which will turn them into serial killers, they obviously fall into the #1 category found on top (they're virtually broke). People that don't know that LFS exists are presumably numerous, but since they don't know that LFS exists and that LFS doesn't get the same kind of marketing as, say, NFS does, they probably will keep on buying NFS. And now I've somehow turned this into a marketing argument.

Well, I feel like this is way too long and that I've lost myself along the way.

130,512 since july 2, 2008 as well as 843 today. It's really not bad. Here's the interrogation I have, though.

Of all those people who download the demo here and there:

1. How many will uninstall it after a few days or leave it on their computer never to be played again?

2. How many will keep playing the demo regularly without paying to acquiring the full version?

3. How many will actually buy the full version?

These figures would be interesting to know, and now that demo players also need to register, I guess Scavier have a possibility of getting those numbers.

I do not believe that a mentally healthy person can be pushed to the point of killing people by a video game, however violent it can be. Maybe an already mentally VERY sick person can be pushed over the limit, snap and do something like that, but we're not talking of depression sick, here, it would have to be something much deeper.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if gambling caused more people to go insane and do something like this than video-games.

edit to quote:

Quote :exposure to anything leads to gradually decreasing responses.

Yes, but I'm uneasy about this in this particular case. For instance, I've been playing decently violent video-games for years, and I don't think I'd be less affected if I saw somebody try to kill someone on the street, or even if I was caught in the middle of a shooting like that. Another example: if you play Grand Theft Auto for years and of course drive like a total moron in it, does it make you more prone to car accidents? Or will it affect your driving at all?

People influenced by video games to the point of it actually modifying their behavior are rare, and probably mentally fragile in the first place.

Quote from L@gger :I think LFS need something... Maybe more accurate patch releasing time + some real track + more real cars + rain + breaking of wheels or some parts of car maybe poped tires if u little push someone to his tire. Those are things what i think lfs need ... LFS the most realistic and the best simulator i think. Have just 1800 user at sunday evening what is sux because it needs +10000ppl online at the moment. Too many servers are empty and i cant find that what i want

Quote from L@gger :Maybe more accurate patch releasing time

The devs would love the patch including the VWS to be already released. Sometimes, however, things don't go as planned. Complications have arisen and it has been postponed. When things don't go as planned in this buisness (and most of the time they don't), it's very hard to keep an original roadmap intact.

Quote from L@gger :some real track + more real cars + rain + breaking of wheels or some parts of car maybe poped tires if u little push someone to his tire.

Real tracks and real cars are interesting, yes, but they cost a lot of money to be licensed. And the more famous the track or car is, the more money it'll cost to license.

Concerning rain, it was, I believe, originally planned for S3, so that's not coming any time soon. However, I think that a better damage system was something Scawen wanted to do before the final release of S2, among other things.

I've been involved in the patched game world for a few years now and there are some things that are redundant in most games. First, the devs usually don't speak much. They either prefer to keep silent, or dispatch other people to speak for them (which is something I would encourage Scavier to do). Second, things get postponed. Programming things, such as videogames, and especially patching them, always seem very straightforward on paper, but complications arise most of the time. That's why QA exists. The Patch TEST forum is not there to give us the patches early, it's there to do QA. I've worked in QA before, and things usually go as this:

- Dev releases product to be tested (that's the patch test forum)
- QA searches for bugs, and reports to dev (again the patch test forum)
- Dev fixes bugs found by QA
- Process is repeated until bug-free

"Dev fixes bugs found by QA" is where we're at now. Scawen has heard about things not going well with the current patch and he's at fixing those things now. Yes, it takes time! Yes, it can stop the process of further developement until the current problems are fixed. That's the whole point!

AFAIK, it has been stated by the devs that it could not easily be done.

For instance, what people would suggest is to take an already existing track, say South City, and then basically open all the roads in there from all the configurations to basically have something people can roam into. I'm not sure on the technical part, nor do I remember exactly what was the problem, but it couldn't be done. Therefore, the devs would basically have to design a whole new track for this to work. Which takes time. And will.

Here's an example of why I use Songbird, now. In the quest for computer management simplification, having the music and the browser in the same program becomes a very huge bonus. It has a new version coming in soon (currently in beta) that adds more to the goodness of the bird.

The problem really is with the drivers. You're looking for the best of the best, and the driver pool with F1 potential isn't that big from the start. I don't think trying to acquire American mechanics for USF1 is a problem at all, nor would be trying to keep their car American-made, etc. I'm not saying that they won't be able to find some very good American drivers which could end up highly successful, I just think it's a very bad idea to keep it to American drivers in an area where there's not that many people to choose from anyway.

Who knows, they might end up testing like 20 American drivers and find none that fit for the job. Then what would they do? Hire the best of them, even though he's not good enough, and hope that the mechanics make up for it? That would be ridiculous.

Nationalism is really not a good idea in F1. It's mostly not a good idea in team sports as a whole. For instance, have a look at Olympic teams (or world championship teams, etc). They're never as good as the teams found in the pro leagues, because they have to keep it to players of only one nationality. And yes F1 is a team sport.

p.s. Thanks for the topic name change, I failed at capital letters

I don't really care about all the new features they're trying to pass on us with all those new browsers. I don't really even care much when they talk about speed. I've never actually felt a browser was much faster than any other. For me, browsing speed depends much more on your computer, your connection, and how fast you can actually browse (watching 40 yrs old people browse is a pain for me).

What I want from a browser is quite simple. I need it to be customizable enough to be good looking, I want it to be reasonably secure and finally I want it to have split-view. Which is why I prefer Maxthon

e: I actually tried Chrome. But it looks awful by default and at the time there was no way to change its look. I also sometimes use Songbird for browsing when I want to listen to music while doing so

I really have a problem with them trying to be patriotic with their choice of drivers. Okay, I agree that hypothetically having, say, an European born driver in a car that has USF1 printed on it would ludicrous, but they're still keeping themselves away from so many good foreign drivers by doing this. I'm really not convinced F1 is a place to be patriotic in.

There are some good drivers in the US, that's for sure, but what if there is a much better option somewhere else that they'll overlook just because they have to put an American in the car?

I agree, there's next to no moaning on the LFS forums. Mostly, it only happens when there hasn't been a huge patch in a long time. Other games (online games, especially MMORPGs) tend to have a lot of moaning the day after the patch gets out. Having no moaning when the patch actually arrives is a good achievement.
