Quote from christoph schirmer :As you know, those who write the magazines, are also sim-racers, so assume lack of knowledge or lack of news submitted to us if LFS is not covered, not lack of interest or any conspiracy.

So none of your editorial staff play LFS or even keep their fingers on the pulse of what's happening in LFS? No-one? Given LFS' popularity and the amount of critical praise and awards it receives, that beggars belief. For instance, it won the Best Simulation award in your (AutoSimSport, before you branched into VirtualMotorsports) own reader's awards poll. How is it that none of the editorial staff of a racing simulation ezine actually play the game that won their own Best Simulation award?
Tyre Wear

Is there any way to check tyre wear either using a popup or in the pits? I thought the F9 popup indicated tyre wear by the thickness of the line representing the tyre segment but I've just run a 20 lap practice and can't see any difference in the thickness of the lines.

Attached is an image showing the tyre state at the beginning of the run on the left with the tyre state at the end of the 20 lap practice superimposed on the right. There is no difference in the thickness of the segment lines even when I do a pixel by pixel comparison.

Has there been much coverage of the Intel Racing Tour 2006 which has a BMW M6 as the grand prize?

Quote from J.B. :Who cares? It harms the credibility of the Simracing press more than it harms LFS and it's users.

The more coverage LFS receives, the more people are likely to buy it which will help to finance on-going development.

Back to the topic of lack of LFS coverage in the gaming press, I've run into something similar at a sim gaming website that I visit regularly. They're quite well established in the military flight sim world with a readership in the several thousands and have started to cover motor racing sims too. However, their coverage consists of all-rFactor, all the time to the virtual exclusion of everything else. Their readers aren't being exposed to other motor racing titles, threads about rFactor abound in the forums and there are a steady stream of readers new to racing sims buying rFactor just because it's the only game being talked about.

It's pretty common for me to see pings in the 100-200ms range with only a dozen or so below 100ms. I suspect this is because I'm way over here in western Canada and most of the servers are way over there half way around the world in Europe.

Quote from sil3ntwar :I highly doubt he has buggered off. I bet he has no time to open emails because he is working flat out on this game.

I've seen this argument made several times over at RSC. It doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Look, kunos was posting quite regularly at RSC in the weeks leading up to netKar PRO's release. The weeks leading up to a release are known as crunch time, where you work flat out to get the product out the door. If he could post regularly then, he can certainly post an occasional one-line update now. Instead, it's been months since anyone has heard from him. He seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. His associate Schummy1, who was also posting regularly at RSC in the weeks leading up to and immediately following release, has likewise disappeared. Emails to the support email address go unanswered.

I'm not suggesting that netKar PRO is/was a scam. At this point, I don't suppose any of us will ever know what happened. I suspect, however -- and this is pure speculation -- that it didn't sell nearly as well as kunos had hoped and that he had to make a choice between abandoning the project or facing financial hardship. I know which choice I would make.

Quote from sil3ntwar :You can get a refund from what i understand.

Nope. Many weeks ago, I tried emailing the netKar PRO support email address about a refund. No response. I tried emailing them again. Still no response. I tried emailing kunos directly. No response there either. I have considered having my credit card company do a charge-back on the grounds that the product is not fit for use but have refrained from doing so because it will affect kunos' credit. My credit card has a 6-month charge-back period and if there has been no progress within the next couple of months, I'll do a charge-back and let kunos deal with the credit card company if he chooses to fight it.

To help determine if it's a problem with your pedals, turn on the option to show virtual pedals. I'm not at my gaming system and can't remember the exact setting but I think it's in the Options | Display screen. This turns on some coloured bars at the bottom right of the screen which shows how much pedal input LFS is detecting. The latest test patch has a useful feature where a small white cap is displayed at the top of each coloured bar when that pedal is at max input. If you're not seeing max input (full bar) when the pedals are floored and min input (no bar) when you're not touching the pedals, this points to a problem with the pedals: they either need to be recalibrated in Windows and/or LFS, or there is a more fundamental mechanical or electronic problem with the pedals themselves.

Other possible reasons :

- you're inadvertently braking by resting your foot on the brake pedal (check external view for brake lights on those cars that have them).
- you don't accelerate out of the corner as quickly as the other players.

Quote from ThomasSoerensen :BuddhaBing: So you mean that the reason I experienced a lot of sliding around is that I drove it far too agressively?

I'm saying that you can't compare the behaviour of the cars in LFS and your real car unless you (a) drive both the same way and (b) ensure that the simulated car has specs, performance and configuration as similar as possible to your real car. Since you can't -- or shouldn't -- drive real cars on public roads as aggressively as they are usually driven in LFS, the only way to do a valid comparison is to drive the cars in LFS the same way you usually drive your real car.

The specs and performance of the XR GT Turbo most closely resemble those of the 350Z so I took the XR GT Turbo out for a few laps around Blackwood, driving as though I was on public roads and keeping my speed at or below 100kph throughout. The car was completely stable and felt planted on the road at all times; there was no sliding or drifting, no drama whatsoever.

For the sake of completeness, I also did the same test using the 3 cars in the demo: the UF1000, the XF GTi and the XR GT with the same result in each case; the cars felt solid and nowhere near the limit of traction.

So, I suspect the reason you feel that the cars slide too much compared to your 350Z is, as Tristan suggested, that you are driving the cars in LFS far more aggressively than you drive your real car.

The invitation contains a registration code which is tied to an individual and which can be used to register the game only once. Since you need to register online in order to play, need to login every time the game launches and the content is managed and distributed online, I'm pretty sure the developer would be able to detect duplicate registration codes.

Welcome to LFS, DavidSS. Good choice!

Don't forget to try some of the slower street cars too. Each car has its own charm.

At least 2 Formula 1 teams (and/or their sponsors) have rFactor-based custom builds for trackside promotion. I suspect the racing sims at the US GP will be those.

The driving feel, car dynamics and force feedback are very reminiscent of netKar PRO. Very promising.

Almost all other aspects (graphics, sound, multiplayer, user interface) are clearly under development and it's simply not fair to draw any conclusions from them. Screenshots and videos at this stage would be counter-productive because they would just highlight areas that still need work without showcasing those areas that work well.

The core of what's currently implemented shows a lot of potential but it's at least several months away from being ready for beta testing.

Went from a two pedal setup and left foot braking to a three pedal setup and right foot braking with heel & toe a couple of weeks ago. I've been driving manual transmission cars for almost 20 years yet despite that I still had a hard time initially adjusting to using a clutch and right foot braking in sims. It feels completely natural now that I have adapted and although I still mess up the occasional downshift using heel & toe and my laptimes are a few seconds off my previous personal bests, I find my time in game much more challenging and rewarding.

I think the latest version posted for download at the main site http://www.liveforspeed.net/?page=downloads is version U, so you should be able to download the latest version listed and use the LFS.exe from that.

No, it's not a problem. TrackIR doesn't use a 1:1 mapping between the amount you turn your head and the amount the in-game view rotates. It scales responses so that, for example, if you turn your head 30 degrees to the left, the view rotates 90 degrees or 120 degrees or however many degrees you choose. This allows you to look backwards while still looking at the screen. It takes a few minutes to get used to but feels very natural once you adapt.

Here's a map of a little road trip I did a couple of years ago, when I moved from just outside New York where I had been living and working back to beautiful British Columbia.

http://members.shaw.ca/sjdickson1968/roadtrip_ny_la_vic.jpg

It was winter, so I headed south for warmer weather and better road conditions and decided to have some fun along the way, with detours to New Orleans, Los Alamos, the Alamagordo desert, White Sands range and Roswell all in New Mexico as well as the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and the Pacific Coast Highway north to San Francisco. In all, the trip took 7 days.
