I should not have to race in a closed server to expect close, clean racing. If someone is so far off the pace they are getting in the way of competitive racers then they shouldn't be on the server. If said person is not smart enough or respectful enough to remove themselves, then they need to be kicked/banned. There are plenty of servers out there and anyone can run their own. If someone is too slow for a particular server they should find one that better suits their skill level or they should practice offline until they can race cleanly and at least not be a threat to other drivers who are trying to have some close racing.
If I'm running a server I'll kick/ban whoever I damn well please. If you don't like it, too bad. I personally don't kick or ban anyone without good reason, but I can see why some people would. You have no right to tell someone how to run THEIR server. If you wanna make the rules? Start your own.
Maybe instead of asking people to put "pro only" or "skilled drivers" in the server name you might ask the people who are slow to start their own servers and put "120% benchmark" or "slow ass drivers only" in their server name?
I agree with this. In a real race you would be black flagged and removed from the track if you're too slow. You become a danger to other drivers and a hazard on the track. If you're not polite enough to remove yourself, then yes, a ban is in order.
Never heard of the guy. But there are a few demo racers who've really contributed to LFS who would be worthy of S2 license "donations". Off the top of my head, I think Electrik Kar is deserving. He's done more than "show interest". He's actually taken his free time and given something back to the community.
I can guarantee you that this is not going to be changed for Vista. It's too late in the product cycle for such a change, and the function that allowed this system to work (allowed for inserting data in an already streaming buffer) is deemed as risky. Simple as that.
Scawen will have to find some other way to generate the sound. Luckily, he's one of the most talented programmers I've come across, so I'm sure he can do it. With a little luck not only will he work around this new limitation, but he'll improve the end product as well. Who knows, maybe this will be the catalyst that gets an improved sound generation system put in the game?
Note: I'm not a representative of Microsoft and make no statements on their behalf. You'll just have to trust that I know what I'm talking about.
I'm hoping that Scawen has plans to use the number pad keys. I'd really love to see the 7,9,1, and 3 toggle whether or not each tire gets changed when pitting. The 8 and 2 keys would be perfect for adjusting brake balance, and the 4 and 6 keys would work for ARB adjustments.
This would take care of several requested features and seems to be a very logical layout.
I think you are probably on the right track here. I don't know any of the details, but a lot of stuff in Vista has been "sandboxed" so that malicious software and misbehaving programs can't destabilize the system. I've got a feeling that audio has been handled similarly and that's what is causing this issue. I don't know this for a fact, but it's my hypothesis.
Scawen - I'm not a programmer and even if I was, I'm bound by NDA. If you have specific questions I can try to get you some info. Otherwise, there's a limit to how much I can help, unfortunately.
Doesn't RBR generate sound in a similar way to LFS? If so, does it have the same problem? Anyone know?
